I'd say, wait down to the wire, say, like, one minute left. (Something could happen within those 15 minutes.) But if nothing had happened in that time, press the button, no matter which boat I'm on. Yes, it's killing people, but if it were 100% sure that both boats would be blown up if neither did anything, you can at least save half the people by killing the other half. Yes, it's cruel, but it allows the potential to save the most people.
iwould blow them up because they may have some inocent people on there but yours has children on it and such that have not even exsperanced life yet and if i was the other i would not do it because i lost alot of rights when i committed my crime and it the least i can do to repay sasiaty
I'd start shooting with no justification. I am sadly geared for fight/flight which is instinctual. Morality is not in issue when it comes to survival.
Assuming the ships had equal numbers of people, I would push the button instantly. If one ship has to be blown, why not the other one? Plus I could spare the hand-wringing types the burden of conscience. Given that criminals tend to be self-serving, even a slight delay would almost certainly be fatal. Also the criminals, if they survived, would only have prison to look forward to. You're welcome, ship. Once again I save the day, and I bet I get crap for it.
If anyone jumps off the boat, it gets blown up? Fine. Here's how I handle it, then. "Listen up, you fuckers. We do things my way, we all live, and assuming those dumbasses on the other boat have the wit, they'll do the same. Get to the top deck, and everyone... all at once, on MY signal... jump. No stragglers, no early birds... We're in this together." Let them, or the villain, blow up the boat when someone jumps... since we all jumped at once, there's NOBODY THERE.
On the other hand, I don't believe for a single second in the inherent "sanctity of life", and so anyone who went against this plan would, for the good of the group, be dealt with swiftly and fatally. In a life or death situation, you have to weed out the dumb ones, and quickly. They have an alarming tendency to get themselves, and their fellows, killed.
@TheSoulOfTheBard It's probably safe to assume that an explosion of sufficient magnitude to destroy the ship would also be lethal to anyone within jumping distance. These psychopaths clearly went to a lot of trouble. Also they would probably wise up to your plan when they saw everyone lining up along the edge. Experiments need to be observed, or they are pointless. That's not even accounting for the obvious reality that at least a couple of criminals would get to the button first.
What people fail to consider is that if you DON'T blow up the other people and at the end of the time frame you both got blown up then the deaths of the people on both boats are on your conscious.
This is just a revamp of the old "so you a train driver and there is an old lady on the tracks...etc" conundrum.
It is meant to show that inaction can make you as guilty as action.
Since the criminals are more expected to blow up the other boat according to the average person, if the criminals actually did blow up the other boat, would that prove Joker's point?
I wouldn't do it, I couldn't bring myself to actively kill even one person regardless of the crimes they have committed. And therefore I wouldn't push the job onto anyone else, I would actively try to keep other people from using the detonator as well because I think that in that stressful situation I would push myself and overcome the fear of the situation because I would hold a hope of doing something Noble with my last quarter hour on Earth.
Hmmm. I would first try to find the detonator and see if someone could disable it or if we could throw it over board. If I was a criminal, I would probably have a better chance of having a bomb expert on the boat. If nothing else could be done, I would get all of the people as far away from the bomb as possible and detonate it. If ours goes out, more people will survive. If it kills the people on the other boat, oh well. I will save myself before I save 100 or 1000 people I don't know.
Causing death from one's inaction is not a sin. There are thousands of people dying everyday from your inaction. However, killing people, regardless of whether the law deems them guilty or not, regardless of whether it saves others, is a sin. I'd probably not blow up the other boat.
I wouldn't Do anything, the notion it's self-preservation is not true. you're not saving yourself, you're condoning murdering ppl & self-preservation is your excuse. one you do it, you are the criminal, you are the same person u just killed. a person who made excusing for harming others
i would do it in a second. maybe not if i was on the criminal boat, but if i was on the other one, the criminal boat is gone. i'll save myself over rapists, murderers, etc.
(part two lol) and leaving a positive impact pushing the people that survive to grow and excel In new tasks and problems conquering their fears and now the little ones will and should as it happens in real life keep in mind what happen thus changing somethings for the better. hopefully lol
Well, Communication would be one thing I'd try. I would Try communicating with the "Criminals," and the "Civilians." Tell the people not to be hasty not to press the button as it could blow them up to if they do try to kill the opposite boat to survive. I'm thinkin' this is a big boat, well two big boats and if I was a criminal"" well I'd sacrifice my own life regardless of my religious views as even though I'm dying I'm not paying for what I did, but doing what seems as right in popular belief
Consider the fact that there aren't just criminals on the boat. There are also police officers who have to keep them in order as well. Someone has to be there to maintain order so that the criminals don't get too out of hand. Would you be willing to kill them as well?
those earings you are wearing represent illuminati symbolism, even though they support secualr society they do so in the name of there satanic worship (strong survive etc.) so watch out for that.
That scenario is some crazy stuff, evil crap. I would become Batman and take out the joker! Duh! Maintain the peace!!
Make videos exposing satanic imperialistic NWO group.
i would probably really REALLY wanna press the detonater(to save myself and the other people) but id be way too scared.
But one way you could possibley escape is if everyone jumped off the boat at the same time....then again the Joker would probably just figure out another way to kill you.
Another alternative might be to use a steam source (if available) to remove the base charge (if it's a cast explosive such as TNT), it would all depend on the specifics of the device in play. I sure wouldn't like to trust the conditions set by a criminal, especially THAT criminal.
I'd try to make the bomb safe. Hopefully we'd have shotguns because removign the shot from a round and filling the barrel of the shotgun with water and taping over the muzzle gives you a disrupter.
Not sure what alternatives exist if no shotguns are available, maybe point a CO2 extinguisher at it, decapitate the extinguisher so the fuse is too cold to initiate.
Yeah, I know, I've been watching too much MacGyver. I'd also look to establish communications with the Marshals on the prison ship.
It depends on how out of my mind with fear I am. If I am completely out of my mind with fear, I would probably kick scratch and bite to get someone to push that damn detonator, and likely later on attempt suicide out of guilt.
If not, I'd probably sit down and shiver in fear, but not push the button.
I'd detonate regardless. The social status of the individuals is irrelevant, a child is no more valuable than a criminal. Even if the detonator destroyed my own ferry, I'd still detonate as that would still maximize my own chance of survival.
@EvilScuzz so ur more valuable than both a child and a criminal, or indeed anyone else in either of the boats? not only are you selfish, but you have not considered the possibility that you may blow yourself up, or that if you do, you won't get killed anyway.
@Grymbaldknight Every life on those boats is equally valuable. If one boat isn't detonated, both boats will be. My choice maximizes the survival of people on those boats.
I think you need to watch the video again and re-read my post. My last sentence actually addressed your last sentence, so I have reason to believe you haven't read my post at all, in which case, why respond?
If it ACTUALLY happened, I wouldn't believe the person speaking, and I'd jump off the damn boat hoping not to be seen. If it happened in MOVIE LAND, where criminals wear makeup and heroes dress like flying rodents, then I'd wait for the flying rodent.
My fist thought was, jump out of the boat, then you said i couldnt do that, and then im like, well i guess id push the button so nobody else would have to deal with the guilt. I was pretty set on that and then youre all, but the joker is a tricksker and at that point im kinda like fuck, but still wanting to push the button myself.
Otherwise, if I was on the criminal side. It's gona be chaotic and I'm so not gona be in command, but say if I had the power to, I'd destory the detonator to make sure no one can press it and an attempt to calm everyone down. Then try to find the brightest person in the group for an evacuation/escape plan! Or jump ship all together.
I believe the side that holds the future should continue, but that doesn't mean that I would forfit our lives. If we're going down, we're going down trying!!! \o/
I would blow it up if I was on the civilian side because I belive more will be lost if the civilian boat is gone. I'm not saying that one side's lives are more important than the other's, but the side that 1. works (or does more than slave labor) and 2. has the children (or is more likely to, because the stress at that time wouldn't let me realize that there is a chance that other boat might be juvinles), I'd run for the detonator for the click. Saddly though, i think fremiamagus is right. ^^;
@spilledinsanity maybe i got the words mixed up. I'm saying that the life itself is valuable but what would you see as more valuable? a groupa old people or a group of children? Thats what I'm referring to. Although all life is valuable, life isn't fair. Some people are more important than others in what they do, can do, or bring to the society. Kind of like chess in a way.
i would want someone to blow the other boat up, but i would sit quietly. that would definitely be my initial reaction. but then i'd probably shout, "EVERYONE STFU!!! let's just think about this for a second, ok?"
i'd still secretly want someone to grab the 'sploder and hit the button, but i would also try to argue why we shouldn't.
you basically have two options; two boats of people blow up but your morality is preserved or only one does but you are responsible for it have to live with the guilt. personally i'll save the lives of the boat i'm on, if your talking in terms of morality, isn't it better to save people and somewhat selflessly risk destroying yourself mentally than sitting back and letting everyone die?
ok...id have 15 minutes to pull the trigger?...my only problem would be what would i do with the next 14:59....id blow them to pieces before the guy over the intercom could stop talking, lmao!...as to why, well...several reasons, self preservation, thinning the herd, saving people who arent criminals...cause what the hell else would there be to do on a ferry with no power...lol
"worth more to society" seriously? That makes their life more valuable. I meani dpress the button on the civilian boat but i would too on the criminal boat.
My first reaction would be the same: shocked. Then I would tell myself that I should blow the other boat up to save me and everyone else on my boat. But I would never be able to live with myself deliberately killing some people, even if they are criminals and so I would not press the button. And then I'd take on the same mentality, whatever happens happens, but I'm not going to kill someone.
Make sure to stay out of the mass panic that ensues. Then do a cost/benefit analysis. Which boat has the most potential for human advancement. In the civilian boat, there are many productive members of society. Most, if not all, of the people in the criminal boat have done little to ensure a better future for the next generation. therefore, it is logical to assume that the civilian boat has and overall more net worth.
i would be hoping that somebody would press it but at the same time hoping they wouldnt. because every life has a purpose in my eyes.
criminal side? well most people think really high of themselves and think of criminals as scum...so i would wonder why the fuck my boat was still there. and again would be hoping somebody would press it but at the same time wouldnt.
That way of thinking "It's not my fault, or guilt, if i let somebody else do it" is just as selfish, yet worse in my eyes than actualy doing. Not only is your heart focussed on saving your skin and killing others, but you want to make someone else the bad guy for your own hearts intentions. It's what's in the heart that counts. Even if all your actions hide your human selfish heart, God will always see it.
knowing the joker i think he'd blow us up anyway or the detonator would've been my own! so yeah....i mean we'd all die anyways might as well be the bad guys yeah? id do it.
In the movie, the people on the boats don't really know about the Joker, so if I similarly did not know, I wouldn't be sure I could trust the "game" as it was presented.
But being outside of the movie, and knowing about the Joker, I'd trust him even less.
then youre weak... id just let time run out...and everybody dies...atleast i didnt kill anyone... nor did i let myself be threathened or fooled into taking life.
on the civilian Boat: I would hit the Button within 3 sec Thoughts (civ doing probably less Harm to Society + no Time for a more detail Examination)
on the criminal Boat: I would jump of the Boat (save the civ Boat(trigger explosion on crim. B) + maybe(even with absolutely slim chance) survive myself)
VgolddiggerV: "I won't need 15 minutes. I would grab the detonator and say "allah hu akbar" then press the button."
That made me laugh heartily. Thanks for that.
In all seriousness, I'd have no qualms pushing the button. Whether I'm on the criminal boat or the John Q boat, my actions would be the same. I'm a narcissist and while I believe all existence is meaningless and inconsequential, I enjoy mine all the same. If it's a choice between my life and yours, I'm picking me.
I won't need 15 minutes. I would grab the detonator and say "allah hu akbar" then press the button.
In reality, we would all be dead in a matter of seconds because I don't trust the criminals on the other ship would hesitate to blow us up. If we are still alive after 30 seconds I am pretty sure the criminals don't have a detonator so the best solution would be to tell everyone to jump ship at the same time.
So would we still be responsible for the deaths in the other ship if it blows up?
natural survival instinct would take over....I hate to say it, but I would push the detonator. when it comes down to life or death situations, morality flies out the window, and as animals we will do anything to keep alive!! or maybe its just me....lol!
well, assuming that what the voice on the loudspeaker says is true, i would start talking to people on my boat and go over the pros and cons with the intent of trying to get someone else to press the detonator, because I don't think I would be able to do it. My reason for wanting the other boat to blow up is to save the women, children, etc... I don't value my life enough to kill others for it.
If I were a prisoner, since I don't value my own life as much, I would stop anyone from pressing it.
First of all I would like to say that I think that you can't actually know what will be your choice until the real thing happen. So people can say that they will act the so called right way. But I doubt that if we throw them in the ship the will act the same. It's is applying to me too.
My awswer is that everyone dies. And when time as come you die. And I am not a murderer. I think ill just do nothing and try to stop people who wants to blow the other ship.
I am not a criminal. so asking me what I would do is sort of nonesence. It is like asking me what I would do if I was a penguin. I am not. so I can't answer the question.
wow you are so smart i never taught of dat... dat da joker might have given people their own detonator to blow themselves up... good point p.s. ur so hot n smart wink wink ^_-
if someone was actually smart enough to set up two boats to detonate ... in 15 minutes ... i think they would be smart enough to tell ppl that each detonater destroys the OTHER boats when in reality... each detonator ..explodes BOTH boats..so ... ur screwed either way o_O
Jump out.. if there is a chance that the detonators are switched I'd just jump out the boat and let them both explode. If I'm with friends or family I'd just make it that we all jump out together.
It won't be possible to have all of the passengers on the ferry jump out since that would be too much of a risk that somebody jumps out of sync and kills everyone else.
If I was on the criminal boat.. I'd probably do the same.
These videos are great. I've been watching them all day. :]
Okay, in this situation, I wouldn't be able to do ANYTHING. Everyone, criminals, children, good people. They all, all have the same rights to live. Nobody deserves to die more than someone else. People make mistakes in life, and it's understandable. Nobody on one boat deserves to die more than the other. So I wouldn't be able to do a thing. If it were just me on the boat, It would be different...
Okay I think that this is really great how you're explaining this incredible social experiment that did occur in Dark Knight.. personally, I couldn't do it- I just couldn't imagine being the one to pull the trigger or being responsible or maybe not being responsible but having that guilt that I killed innocent civilians, criminals, but they are still human, and I just wouldn't be able to do it.
That was putting aside the Joker's insane, deranged mind of his, but truthfully I would be to scared to press the detonator even if I wanted to because I believe that the detonator would blow up both ferry's by pressing one.. or the detonator that you believed was for the other ferry was actually for yours. So fear would play a lot into my actions if I wanted to do it but like I said I could never take someone's life even if they were heinous criminals.
I wouldn't blow up any boat - whether I was criminal or not because if I did blow up either boat I'd be a killer. And even if I did anyways, it's not like the person taking us - the civilians and the prisoners - as hostages is going to let us live anyways - they'd probably kill us after we've killed the other people for their own sheer enjoyment.
I would work on the assumption that our detonator would blow our boat. That was the assumption I made with the dark night. That would be what I think I could do if I was as mad as the joker. I think the civilian vessel is more lightly to press the button because they can de self-righteous in their action despite the innocent crew and guards the criminals cannot.
not so true from what ive heard sociopaths not only have no feeling or disire but seem to work off a system thats why they play those types of games usally they create rules to live by in their life and follow them strictly he wasnt interest in deciveing anyone he wanted to play a game and watch them struggle to decide.
Everything in me would be screaming not to do it, that their lives mean just as much as ours. But it wouldn't take long for me to walk up to the guy holding the detonator and press the button. I'd still want to do a lot for society, there are children on board, the other boat is full of murderers (Gotham's worst), the guards sign up to risk their lives, the captain would just be a casualty. None of that really justifies it though and I'd probably start shedding tears for them all right after.
Flipping the switch is the only way you would be killing anyone. If you take every statement to be true the only logical and moral thing you could do is just from the boat.
Both stay on boat = both die
Flip the switch = one life killed is one life saved
Jump from boat = lives are saved and the joker murders other people but there was no way for you to stop him from killing people anyway. By the jokers actions 1 or more ferries of people were going to die.
My arguement would be that even the criminals' boat has innocent people. The guards and navigating staff, like the captain, would not be criminal. Thus, one can not say that they would blow one boat up to save the innocent, because both vessels contain them.
Why? Instinct for self preservation. Prisoner's dilemma. Someone on the other one would be thinking the same thing. I'd sacrifice convicted prisoners - and if you're wondering, I'm pro death penalty.
Since we are talking about the Joker here it is most likely that either detonator will blow both boats up. The Joker is a criminal mastermind of the highest order, but the thing he will not have counted on is that no one presses the button.
For the sake of the arguement, lets say I/you/anyone else does press the button....What is the actual chance that you aren't going to get blown up by the joker anyway?
@fremiamagus The Joker would, He's Chaotic Neutral. he doesn't care what people do. long as they do it for themselves. but then again, since he is Chaotic Neutral he's proud of u and kill u anyway.
I'd really, really, really want to press that detonator. The fact that prisoners are on the other boat helps alot in that, even though there are innocent people in prison. But, I don't think I could. I couldn't stand the guild, or self-loathing that would come along with knowing I destroyed that many people.
I think in my head, I would be hoping someone pressed the detonator BUT, in all actuality I wouldn't do it and would ask other people to not do it either. My main reason for thinking this would be that the person who set this up most definitely has something wrong with them and there has to be more to the situation than blowing the other boat up. He may punish us for doing it, or the detonator could blow up our ship, or maybe...no one gets blown up at the end.
I wouldnt blow up the other boat because i feel like if i mudered a bunch of people to save my own life no matter what their "conviction" was I would be going directly against me, im very nonviolent and do not see how any of the people on the boat are any better than the criminals. people make bad decisions there could have been a genius on the other boat who saved the world or some shit. I dont know what id do if i was a criminal, id probably feel the same.
Well... considering that it was the Joker that made this "game", I would put my head between my lags and kiss my ass good-bye. The person who pushes the switch is basically Blowing up their own boat.
haha i noticed in the movie the criminals were a lot more noble and the civilians are total assholes. id blow the civilians asses up! lol jk i would wait for someone else to do something. im such a coward
They should all line up along side the boat and jump off in unison and hope the bomb reacts relatively slowly, the guy is bluffing and there really isn't a way of telling is someone jumps off, or that the bomb radius is small and is only meant to sink the boat, or hope that there actually isn't bomb. But first they could try to find the bomb and throw it over board.....
I'd love to say I would never even think about blowing up the other boat. But I think in that situation, I'd put my life before others, and vote to blow up the other boat.
I would never be able to press the detanator. No Way. I would argue that the other boat would have Security gaurd people in charge and that every life is precious if they didn't listen to me (because i'm young) i would probable after loosing my voice from shouting , go hide.
true, I wouldn't say that criminals should be blown up because they committed crimes, however the civilians are more 'useful.' More likely to improve the lives of others, whereas the criminals are more likely to reduce happiness in others. Obviously this argument rests on utilitarianism, and the merits of this would be an entirely different argument.
That assumes that the prisoners are actually criminals. Which in the current state of the US justice system, isn't always a safe bet. many of them might well be incarcerated for non-violent crimes such as possession.
Regardless, a human life is of equal value. If to no one else, to the person owning the life.
That is a good point, and some might simply be innocent. But there is likely to be murderers and rapists and child molesters there also. And I have to disagree with you about the human life. I can't see how life itself is an important property, a necessary one, but not a sufficient one. But I think that we disagree on a fundamental level, you I assume either follow deontology whereas I follow utilitarianism. And that would be a long debate not fit for youtube comments.
Ok I'll check out that channel, I am opposed to execution also. I think punishment for the sake of punishment is based on irrational emotions. I don't believe people have free will, so they deserve sympathy and help not punishment.
I find your free will comment interesting. Because I *do* believe in free will. Though I also except that we are animals and have certain innate drives. As I pointed out to a friends child yesterday, we are made of meat. :)
Lol if the civilians blow up the convicts then they just murderd a boatful of people and it is only right that you arrest them all. So we have a boatful of criminals no matter who lives.
Lol, that is a really interesting point. Laci should know since she is getting a law degree, but I wonder if they could somehow get off for self defense or times of deep distress.
I would just sit there and wait to see what happens. I mean yeah, the others are criminals. But they're also people. So, I couldn't as a sane person, kill a boat full of people even if they had killed others. I would just hope for the best.
I wouldn't press the detonator and dont think I could even though I know someone on the other boat could press it. How, in good conscience, could anyone decide to blow up a boat full of people. It feels good living a morally good life, whether it helps or hurts me, no regrets. I loved that scene in the movie, couldnt have played it out any better.
I would want someone to press it. but if no one did the last minutes i would cause.. either you kill them or you die no matter what, and there CRIMINALS> they have probably already done something like it.
Ive seen the dark knight and batman saves the day. But if he didnt i would not press the detonator, as it is also a risk to myself and other innocents, and my weakness is mercy =] so i would spare the criminals, vice versa in the other boats situation, after all many of them have nothing to loose, but the innocents have. Thats my opinion, and R.I.P. Heath Ledger
....Morally I know what is right and it wouldn't matter what I know would be better for me. Knowing that I died for a cause such as saving the lives of hundreds of innocent people is totally worth the consequence, even if it means I get beaten to death. Even though I don't believe in an afterlife, I would find some peace knowing that my life wasn't wasted and that I did some good. Being a criminal, there wasn't much good I could do other than that.
Honestly, if I was on the civilian boat, I would have no problem detonating the other boat. Either we die, they die, or we all die. And since the people on the other boat have less to live for, it makes sense to let us live.
And on the other hand, completely honestly, if I was a criminal on the other boat I would not push the detonator. I would even go as far as protecting it with my life to not let anyone touch it. (to be continued)
I know a lot of people would not want to press the detonator, but their would be a lot onboard who would press it anyway. I think the prison boat in reality would beat the civilian boat to the detonation becuase their morality is already distorted and compromised. On the other hand the prison boat has nothing to exist for. survive to go back to prison? so having more to lose, perhaps the civilian boat would press the trigger first. I do think that neither boat would not refrain from detonating.
The detonator activates when somebody jumps? What kind of a weird mechanism is that? Well, since we're obviously in a parallel world, the Silver Surfer comes along and saves us all (and afterward is burdened with moral dilemmas of his own - "were any of these people really worth saving?" and stuff like that)...
i would throw the detnator into the water and hope that they didnt blow us up.
on a more insane note i would: not jump out i would "fall" out, hope that batman or spider man or somebody would save us, find a sniper rifle and shoot the dude or finally i would try to disarm teh bomb and probly be blown up knowing that a rock has a longer attention span than me
i would probably sit there and reflect on my life and accept that it could all end at any moment and leave all the panicing and indecision to everyone else...
whose life is more valuble? instict would imply self preservation - but an extended life of guilt....
I think in the real world the orange jumpsuits would have been blown up
my personal reaction would be inaction / jump of the boat at 11:59:45 - the boats would have blown up (or not) and I would not be personally responsible.....I think
Lets just say I wouldn't be dropping to my knees and praying lol
I honestly think the joker would have two detionators one on each boat and no matter what detonator switch is turned both boats would be blown up because that is the jokers sense of twisted humor. I would not want to be the jude, jury, or executioner of the criminals if i was on the civilian boat also it would matter on guilt for my actions if i was a criminal on the other boat but in my current mind set of morals i would be willing to go for the pain and suffering i may have caused.

Honestly, I'd be thinking that civilians are worth more than criminals in my head, but I don't think I could actually push the button.

I couldn't blow the other boat up myself. I'd rather die instead of living with the fact that I'm a murderer.

Snakepliskinist 1 month ago
What people fail to consider is that if you DON'T blow up the other people and at the end of the time frame you both got blown up then the deaths of the people on both boats are on your conscious.
This is just a revamp of the old "so you a train driver and there is an old lady on the tracks...etc" conundrum.
It is meant to show that inaction can make you as guilty as action.

I would be blown up because criminals are assholes and i wouldn't have time to think.
But if that didn't happen i would organize everyone to jump off the boat at the fucking same time lol.

I wouldn't do it. Not because I would pity the criminals but because I wouldn't want such a mad man who set this up to prove his point.
hellterminator 5 months ago
I wouldn't do it, I couldn't bring myself to actively kill even one person regardless of the crimes they have committed. And therefore I wouldn't push the job onto anyone else, I would actively try to keep other people from using the detonator as well because I think that in that stressful situation I would push myself and overcome the fear of the situation because I would hold a hope of doing something Noble with my last quarter hour on Earth.
Deanzumwalt 6 months ago

I'd probably not blow up the other boat.
gr1mpillmag3 7 months ago
I wouldn't Do anything, the notion it's self-preservation is not true. you're not saving yourself, you're condoning murdering ppl & self-preservation is your excuse. one you do it, you are the criminal, you are the same person u just killed. a person who made excusing for harming others

Another alternative might be to use a steam source (if available) to remove the base charge (if it's a cast explosive such as TNT), it would all depend on the specifics of the device in play. I sure wouldn't like to trust the conditions set by a criminal, especially THAT criminal.
Psychotol 1 year ago
I'd try to make the bomb safe. Hopefully we'd have shotguns because removign the shot from a round and filling the barrel of the shotgun with water and taping over the muzzle gives you a disrupter.
Not sure what alternatives exist if no shotguns are available, maybe point a CO2 extinguisher at it, decapitate the extinguisher so the fuse is too cold to initiate.
Yeah, I know, I've been watching too much MacGyver. I'd also look to establish communications with the Marshals on the prison ship.

I'd detonate regardless. The social status of the individuals is irrelevant, a child is no more valuable than a criminal. Even if the detonator destroyed my own ferry, I'd still detonate as that would still maximize my own chance of survival.
EvilScuzz 1 year ago 2
@EvilScuzz so ur more valuable than both a child and a criminal, or indeed anyone else in either of the boats? not only are you selfish, but you have not considered the possibility that you may blow yourself up, or that if you do, you won't get killed anyway.

blazearmoru 1 year ago
I would blow it up if I was on the civilian side because I belive more will be lost if the civilian boat is gone. I'm not saying that one side's lives are more important than the other's, but the side that 1. works (or does more than slave labor) and 2. has the children (or is more likely to, because the stress at that time wouldn't let me realize that there is a chance that other boat might be juvinles), I'd run for the detonator for the click. Saddly though, i think fremiamagus is right. ^^;
blazearmoru 1 year ago
@blazearmoru
Thats really fucked up. Being a "criminal" doesnt make your life less valuable
spilledinsanity 1 year ago
@spilledinsanity maybe i got the words mixed up. I'm saying that the life itself is valuable but what would you see as more valuable? a groupa old people or a group of children? Thats what I'm referring to. Although all life is valuable, life isn't fair. Some people are more important than others in what they do, can do, or bring to the society. Kind of like chess in a way.
blazearmoru 1 year ago
i would want someone to blow the other boat up, but i would sit quietly. that would definitely be my initial reaction. but then i'd probably shout, "EVERYONE STFU!!! let's just think about this for a second, ok?"

you basically have two options; two boats of people blow up but your morality is preserved or only one does but you are responsible for it have to live with the guilt. personally i'll save the lives of the boat i'm on, if your talking in terms of morality, isn't it better to save people and somewhat selflessly risk destroying yourself mentally than sitting back and letting everyone die?

Make sure to stay out of the mass panic that ensues. Then do a cost/benefit analysis. Which boat has the most potential for human advancement. In the civilian boat, there are many productive members of society. Most, if not all, of the people in the criminal boat have done little to ensure a better future for the next generation. therefore, it is logical to assume that the civilian boat has and overall more net worth.
dembobbys 1 year ago

That way of thinking "It's not my fault, or guilt, if i let somebody else do it" is just as selfish, yet worse in my eyes than actualy doing. Not only is your heart focussed on saving your skin and killing others, but you want to make someone else the bad guy for your own hearts intentions. It's what's in the heart that counts. Even if all your actions hide your human selfish heart, God will always see it.

VgolddiggerV 2 years ago
natural survival instinct would take over....I hate to say it, but I would push the detonator. when it comes down to life or death situations, morality flies out the window, and as animals we will do anything to keep alive!! or maybe its just me....lol!

well, assuming that what the voice on the loudspeaker says is true, i would start talking to people on my boat and go over the pros and cons with the intent of trying to get someone else to press the detonator, because I don't think I would be able to do it.

Jump out.. if there is a chance that the detonators are switched I'd just jump out the boat and let them both explode. If I'm with friends or family I'd just make it that we all jump out together.
It won't be possible to have all of the passengers on the ferry jump out since that would be too much of a risk that somebody jumps out of sync and kills everyone else.

ForeverxNightz 2 years ago
That was putting aside the Joker's insane, deranged mind of his, but truthfully I would be to scared to press the detonator even if I wanted to because I believe that the detonator would blow up both ferry's by pressing one.. or the detonator that you believed was for the other ferry was actually for yours. So fear would play a lot into my actions if I wanted to do it but like I said I could never take someone's life even if they were heinous criminals.
ForeverxNightz 2 years ago
I wouldn't blow up any boat - whether I was criminal or not because if I did blow up either boat I'd be a killer. And even if I did anyways, it's not like the person taking us - the civilians and the prisoners - as hostages is going to let us live anyways - they'd probably kill us after we've killed the other people for their own sheer enjoyment.

I would work on the assumption that our detonator would blow our boat. That was the assumption I made with the dark night. That would be what I think I could do if I was as mad as the joker. I think the civilian vessel is more lightly to press the button because they can de self-righteous in their action despite the innocent crew and guards the criminals cannot.
hens0w 2 years ago
I didn't actually think about that when I first saw the movie, with the Joker, you never know....
But, let's assume everything the Joker says is true...
I would go with the same reasoning that the one guy on the civilian boat went with....
"We're still here, so that means they haven't blown us up either."
The beauty of the Joker's experiment was that the boats were not automatically going to blow up, instead he had the detonator.

None of that really justifies it though and I'd probably start shedding tears for them all right after.
newtdbz 2 years ago
Flipping the switch is the only way you would be killing anyone. If you take every statement to be true the only logical and moral thing you could do is just from the boat.
Both stay on boat = both die
Flip the switch = one life killed is one life saved
Jump from boat = lives are saved and the joker murders other people but there was no way for you to stop him from killing people anyway. By the jokers actions 1 or more ferries of people were going to die.

I think in my head, I would be hoping someone pressed the detonator BUT, in all actuality I wouldn't do it and would ask other people to not do it either. My main reason for thinking this would be that the person who set this up most definitely has something wrong with them and there has to be more to the situation than blowing the other boat up. He may punish us for doing it, or the detonator could blow up our ship, or maybe...no one gets blown up at the end.

true, I wouldn't say that criminals should be blown up because they committed crimes, however the civilians are more 'useful.' More likely to improve the lives of others, whereas the criminals are more likely to reduce happiness in others. Obviously this argument rests on utilitarianism, and the merits of this would be an entirely different argument.
Morlock27 2 years ago
That assumes that the prisoners are actually criminals. Which in the current state of the US justice system, isn't always a safe bet. many of them might well be incarcerated for non-violent crimes such as possession.
Regardless, a human life is of equal value. If to no one else, to the person owning the life.
tetsubo57 2 years ago
That is a good point, and some might simply be innocent. But there is likely to be murderers and rapists and child molesters there also. And I have to disagree with you about the human life. I can't see how life itself is an important property, a necessary one, but not a sufficient one. But I think that we disagree on a fundamental level, you I assume either follow deontology whereas I follow utilitarianism. And that would be a long debate not fit for youtube comments.

I did a video on my channel called The Moral Rules that explains my position.
In a nutshell, I do not want to be murdered, so I do not murder others. As you probably expect, I am opposed to execution.
tetsubo57 2 years ago
Ok I'll check out that channel, I am opposed to execution also. I think punishment for the sake of punishment is based on irrational emotions. I don't believe people have free will, so they deserve sympathy and help not punishment.

Feel free to comment on my channel if you wish.

So we have a boatful of criminals no matter who lives.
dawgsfan117 2 years ago
Lol, that is a really interesting point. Laci should know since she is getting a law degree, but I wonder if they could somehow get off for self defense or times of deep distress.

i'd jump off the boat and swim away because that's how i escape from sticky situations, by abandoning ship.

I'd find the detonator and blow that other the boat to fucking pieces.
PrimevalScum 2 years ago
I'd wait, not do anything else but sit and wait.
Eddiebleakley 2 years ago
I would just sit there and wait to see what happens. I mean yeah, the others are criminals. But they're also people. So, I couldn't as a sane person, kill a boat full of people even if they had killed others. I would just hope for the best.

I wouldn't press the detonator and dont think I could even though I know someone on the other boat could press it. How, in good conscience, could anyone decide to blow up a boat full of people. It feels good living a morally good life, whether it helps or hurts me, no regrets. I loved that scene in the movie, couldnt have played it out any better.
RyeStewArt 2 years ago
i wouldnt press it becasue i would assume it is a trick and the detanator is for my boat.
bubba102893 2 years ago
I would want someone to press it. but if no one did the last minutes i would cause.. either you kill them or you die no matter what, and there CRIMINALS> they have probably already done something like it.
Glenniecherrie 2 years ago
they're chiminals
lol. just sayin

meh... I would pray to GOD.
and he would save me.

Being a criminal, there wasn't much good I could do other than that.
yadge66 2 years ago
Honestly, if I was on the civilian boat, I would have no problem detonating the other boat. Either we die, they die, or we all die. And since the people on the other boat have less to live for, it makes sense to let us live.
And on the other hand, completely honestly, if I was a criminal on the other boat I would not push the detonator. I would even go as far as protecting it with my life to not let anyone touch it. (to be continued)

id jump the fuck off that effin boat
JL1993219 2 years ago
I know a lot of people would not want to press the detonator, but their would be a lot onboard who would press it anyway. I think the prison boat in reality would beat the civilian boat to the detonation becuase their morality is already distorted and compromised. On the other hand the prison boat has nothing to exist for. survive to go back to prison? so having more to lose, perhaps the civilian boat would press the trigger first. I do think that neither boat would not refrain from detonating.

The detonator activates when somebody jumps? What kind of a weird mechanism is that? Well, since we're obviously in a parallel world, the Silver Surfer comes along and saves us all (and afterward is burdened with moral dilemmas of his own - "were any of these people really worth saving?" and stuff like that)...

do it
crazyyally 3 years ago
That is a quite wicked situation.
But what kind of rational thinking is that? You want it to blow up yet... you don't touch it?
Anyways, I would sit down in a corner and hope nobody rapes me before I (or other people) die. Because that would be awkward.
Guiguilemagicien 3 years ago
i would throw the detnator into the water and hope that they didnt blow us up.
on a more insane note i would: not jump out i would "fall" out, hope that batman or spider man or somebody would save us, find a sniper rifle and shoot the dude or finally i would try to disarm teh bomb and probly be blown up knowing that a rock has a longer attention span than me

i would probably sit there and reflect on my life and accept that it could all end at any moment and leave all the panicing and indecision to everyone else...

Its like saw 4.5 lol
whose life is more valuble? instict would imply self preservation - but an extended life of guilt....
GayBot6900 3 years ago
I honestly think the joker would have two detionators one on each boat and no matter what detonator switch is turned both boats would be blown up because that is the jokers sense of twisted humor. I would not want to be the jude, jury, or executioner of the criminals if i was on the civilian boat also it would matter on guilt for my actions if i was a criminal on the other boat but in my current mind set of morals i would be willing to go for the pain and suffering i may have caused.
