The Voice of Willis Conover for me is "The Voice of America" par excellence. When I was a young Boy in 1953 I didn't know anything about American Music especially not about what Jazz ist. Then I invented the Channel of "The Voice of America" and then I was ev'ry night simply clued to the Radioset, literally creeping into it to listen to that fascinating Voice and so Mr.Conover is responsible for my Lifetime Love for Jazz. Thank you "Mister Jazz" Conover
Also forgot to mention that we played Take the A train and many others at his funeral service.I sometimes played trumpet with him when I was in Junior and High School
@LittleWolfBindery That's right! It even has a power transformer enabling regular 6.3 volt tubes, a feature that was removed in the wartime Echophone EC-1 series and postwar S-38 sets. Performance is quite good for the time except at the very high frequencies where it is rather deaf. But that's to be expected given the extra long leads inside. I am planning to finally restore mine this year or next.
At midnight in London in the sixties when there wasn't a huge choice of radio stations, Jazz Hour from the VOA's Munich relay was a great listen. The preceding 30 minute "Music USA" featured the latest rock and progressive singles and albums. But exactly which version of "Coral Reef" did Willis use as the sig tune of Music USA? Was it Neal Hefti? The commercial version of Hefti's instrumental doesn't fit exactly to my memory of the programme's intro.
This is awesome!! I remember listening to this program on VOA frequently when I was growing up in WV. My mom even remembered him from WTBO in Cumberland MD.. Brings back so many nice memories of how interesting and exciting shortwave listening used to be.

I have an S-19R just like yours. Quite an amazing unit, considering the fact that the Sky Buddy was designed for teenage boys back in the day.

It's model S-19R "Sky Buddy". The S-20R was the next model up in the line. Thanks for watching!

What Hallicrafter model is that. It looks (nearly) like mine S-20R, but not exactly.
