After listening to "My life in the bush of ghosts" hundreds of times, it was great to hear this. Thanks for sharing.
Some years ago I celebrated christmas with a refugee from Palestine. He told me this song is relatively "naughty" compared to arabic standards, as she is singing about her hair moving in the wind.
Could be funny though to read a translation of the text - and maybe also the explanation of why hair is naughty and must be covered !
Her family name was misspelt on the original "Human Voice" Lp which I recorded back in the 80s. As far as I know it has been sampled on 3 CDs incl Byrne & Eno as well as Canadian group Delierium. The family name Yunis is a very familiar Arabic name --never heard of anyone called Yusin.
Brian Eno and David Byrne used this sample long before The Orb! It was in 1981 in the album "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts"...I love The Orb but Eno's the MAESTRO!
By the way the Orb used the track as well on their live double album.
But I think it all was a tribute to Eno and Byrne as the godfathers of bringing sampling to more mainstream pop and meanwhile laying a foundation for house and triphop.
Coldcut sampled it on their remix, Eric B hated the remix and said it was girly disco bullshit. I reckon he was just jealous that for the first time there was some decent scratching on one of their tracks, Not dissing Eric but he rarely did any of the cutting on his tracks if any. I think Rakim did most of it.
Well, I heard Pump Up The Volume on the radio a couple weeks ago, and since I thought it was Ofra in the song, I was freaking excited at the fact that Ofra was on the radio again, if only for a moment. Now it turns out she never was. :(

One part of this song was also used in "Santiago" by Yello in '87.

So what would Dunya Yunis have received?

Rakim hated the remix too, you know. Or at least that's what I read.

but damn it would have made them or a least Island Records a shed load of money and broke them into the uk mainstream,
and to really add insult I think Matt & Jon got something like 850 pounds (from memory) for their troubles, definitely not Paid In Full.

Rakim did scratching?

hitmusicsingles: thanks for posting this. We now finally can close the endless discussion about Ofra Haza in Pump Up The Volume....

I thought it was proven that it was Ofra in Pump Up the Volume? If not, that's dissapointing.

It was proven wrong. Why is it dissapointing? Cheer up, you can still hear Ofra in Eric B's 'Paid In Full' (coldcut remix) ;-)
