@JosefineNielsenDK It is. This is the typical danish mentality. Anyone who is proud of who he/she is and what he/she have accomplished will most likely fall victim to the Jantelaw.
@cheeriosinabowl it actually does still exist, defiantly in Denmark and Faroe Islands, don't know about other Scandinavian countries, but propably. It's quite sad, but when you come from a country that does follow this 'law' and then move to another country most people will piss you off
@roblucacom When winter comes, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives. the individual have to realise that no matter his wealth, no matter his inteligence and no matter his strenght, his existence is still insignificant. @roblucacom claiming that people needs help isn't really the best way of making friends but considering the time we live in i understand your way of thinking. I'll wish you a happy day sir.

@roblucacom you seem to have got it a bit wrong. i'm not some kind of emo, i'm a pretty happy person i like myself and i'm confident in my skills, i'm often out partying with my friends. The Jante law don't say that you cant be anything of those things. it's simply conuters the little beast called Ego, Jante let's you be happy and rich and smart and alll those things, as long as you dont get struck by hybris and starts dreaming of a third Reich. i hope that cleared some things up,have a nice day
@TyphorT38 i dont think so, you see i live in Denmark and could very well be a neighbour of yours so i know quite abit about this ridiculous title and way of thinking, it doesnt even deserve the term "law". Thats just it. Why is ego considered a bad thing? its in our system until the day we drop dead- and for the record incase you didnt know, most scandanavians have woken up to this nonsense- u've send out a video post, Scandanavia beats the U.S.A.?i suggest u look up the word EGO
@roblucacom "its in our system until the day we drop dead." you have nothing to prove that with, every single person do not only think of themeselves. the ego is just a way for the individual to make himself feel better istead of realising his insignificanse. And how is it egoistic to showe some facts? if it's shown that the scandinavian countries have things that in some ways are better than in america its egoistic? that's some strange logic, I guess that further communication are futile
Depressive pricks like yourself need God and society to give you meaning. Your like the kid that sits in art class, being giving an empty paper and complaining to the teacher how you can't paint anything on it. Your entire philosphy is centered around weakness and self-hatred.
@DaveElectric that's were you are wrong. but i do not blame you since its impossible to know someone after just a few coments. i do not hate myself and i'm never complaining whenever i get a white paper, i always tries to fill it upp with something that i like. and i sure as hell need no god, because if i hade a god then how would i be able to fill the paper with something that is me?
@DaveElectric You got it all wrong dear sir. It's YOU are not special, YOU are not important and YOU are not smart. It's a simple statment of facts, you see, we can't have individuals running around believing that they are the best one out of over 6 000 000 000 people, can we?
@TyphorT38 If I'm not special then why the hell are you talking to me as though I am special? If I'm not important than why are you talking to me as though I am important to you? Your perfoming a contradiciton dude.
"You are not smart" is being used a universal. That means you have NO BUSINESS correcting me about anything AS THOUGH you are smart. Again, you are perfoming a contradiction.
We can very well have individuals claiming to be better than others.People are not equal after all.
@DaveElectric the lack of equality do not prove the existance of superiority. and me talking to you does not make either of us special nor important. are two ants that bump into eatch other special? no. or existanse is insignificant. words are just air and the mind, the feeling of on "self" and the ego are just a combination of chemical substances.
@TyphorT38 The lack of equality DOES legitamize superiority because it begs the question where does the inequality come from to begin with? Obviously because humans beings were not equal at their core to begin with! It's also a contradiction to correct someone about the value of egalitarianism. Obviously the act of you correcting me means you believe somehow I am lessar than you in some way. In particular, intellect.
@DaveElectric no one is lesse. because we are all equally "low". to often we asume that we are something higher than something. never do we realise that we might actually be lower instead of higher. but no mather of low we are, or how high we believe we are, we are all still insignificant. usually anarchists recognice our insignificance but i guss that their are other cases. prejudice are bad after all.
@TyphorT38 If we are equally low then why the hell are you correcting about how low we both are? Obviously by the very fact that you are correcting me you somehow believe I am lower than you. In particular, you think my intellect and beliefs are lower than yours.
@TyphorT38 If you are not special then why did you make this video? It isn't special in relation to anything else so isn't it then a contradiction to post this video then? God. Your whole fucking life is a contradiction to your philosophy.
"Existence is insignificant" is an opinion. Significance only exists IF there is a standard. It's a complete categorical mistake to say that life IS significant or insignificant.
@DaveElectric nothing changes from the moment we are born, to the moment we die. therefore life is insignificant. well not life itself. but an individuals life. me lyfe, your life, the idividuals life is insignificant because nothing changes. believing otherwise is just an atempt to make oneself feel better, just like the way religion tries to answer quastions that which we don't know the answer to.
@DaveElectric minor changes that do not effect the grater picture. it's mixing up the individual life and the individual changes. but in the end the "greater picture" stays the same. so your individual atempt at badmouthing and using foul language towards the individual me will change nothing. we will still continue our life and in the end we will die.
@TyphorT38 Fuck the "greater picture", I only care about the issues that surround my essence.
You really are a depressive prick aren't you? How about taking life by the horns; painting a picture on an empty canvas? Why the hell not? My life is meaningless? Saids who? The meaning of my life is my own goddamn opinion!
@DaveElectric No one said that i don't live my life fully. and no one said that you don't do that either. but that's still individual and in the end. nothing changes. but i guess that we will have to leave it at that. and may individual fortune smile upone you

helenjohansen0108 11 months ago
Is this video meant sarcastic?
The Jante law was not depicted as a good thing by Aksel Sandemose.
It is a term used negatively to describe an attitude towards individuality and success.
The social democratic culture of Scandinavia embraces individuality at a large scale compared to the rest of the world, the socialistic factors of our culture are meant to be in harmony with individuality, not opposed to it.
Serethen 2 years ago
@Serethen There is no sarcasm to be found here. the words of the law speaks truth even if they was meent to be bad in the book, but what do you get if people think that they are superior to one another? exactly... Nationalsocialism

The Jante Law is meant as criticism of a society that applies strict laws of sociological equality. which does not let people unfold their individuality.
It doesn't have to be Nationalsocialism, that becomes way too specific.
For a person to have creative enlightenment within a field(may it be art, music, mathematics) it requires that you feel more enlightened than someone else, if everyone was equal to you, you wouldn't feel or have this creative enlightenment. You need a reference point.

If I use my creative individuality in the form of for instance cross-country skiing I want to know that I am good at this field, simply because I've worked my ass off through out my life, and the only way I can know if I'am good at it, is in comparison to others.

So my number 4 here is,
That Sandemose's motive was not the same as your motive,
It is true that in many cases the belief of being better is wrong, and especially when one is trying to "rub it in" on the inferiors.
but this is not what was meant with the "Jante Law"
Sandemose meant for it to be criticism on a typical scandinavian rural area where its people saw to that creativity and idividuality was held down.
Serethen 2 years ago
