One of my favourite locations. The video quality on this one bugs me - was compressed badly and it's a shame because the original is so clear. I have since returned from the drawing board and YT allows larger uploads.
You are busy! Brian is sitting next to me and says you are working through some of his vids too :)
well m always behind in the changes. I never found out where was brianrangley, and then i saw reagan's vid, and then and then then then.. i should be asleep, but now youve both got me grabbing more clickies. I want to see it all and iblame you BOTH!!
I know. Pizza, gelato and espresso - hard to find in these parts! hahaa
Thank you. I was still trying to figure out what the hell those hot water things are called. Leave it to someone who isn't mother-tongue to come up with it!! LOL
It's the Italian being spoken in the street that kills me about videos like this one, Les. Gotta get back there soon.
Oh, and a good, good friend of mine was named to the Crocs board of directors about a year ago...I'll tell her how crazy you and Curt are about their shoes. (She's a serious fashion person and shakes her head about the phenomenon whenever we talk about it!)
I am just gonna hang my camera out the window of my appartment for an afternoon Tom- There are a bunch of local gentlemen who hang out at the caffe bar across the piazza everyday and play cards (scopa or someting) and yell and argue about soccer and politics -funny how I don't even hear it now but at first I was mesmerized.
shhhh...I personally find the croc trend horrific because they are so damned uncomfortable! (um and ugly - but maybe that's the appeal! hahaha)
LOL, Knockoff Crocs - would they be called Croc-Offs?
Thoroughly enjoyed this walking tour. You can feel the history jumping off everything. And, OH that blue water!
Lesley, THANKYOU for what you wrote in the description. The feeling is very mutual. I'm just sorry it took me so long to GET over here to see this and read that. Good grief, I'm turning into the deadbeat subscriber!
Visuals are always better than the sound. Thanks for the grand tour. I would be touching all the stones myself for the same reasons. And the music was nice. And legal.
Oh thank you - your comments are always so generous. I love touching those ancient things knowing that some person hand hewed and chiseled and turned them, and I think of how many people have walked across or touched that very spot for centuries and centuries.
Went there myself when I was 23 and got splashed by the water from the hot springs out in a boat on the lake. It was supposed to take 10 years off you! Now I've visited again with you as my guide and Hannah was able to come too. Terrific, happy tears. Cheers, Lesley
no wonder you look so youthful and your skin is so dewy! My husband went there when he was a teenager and he has lovely skin too. Hmm... too late for me I'm afraid!
Oh I'm glad to have given you a revist and Hannah a tour -I wish the picture was better - but for Hannah I should have included the part where I was devouring a giant ice cream!
Enjoyed this one, gave me a warm feeling seeing everything and everyone drenched in that Italian sunshine.
My wife has an original pair of those plastic shoe thingys. I made her place them outside when they first arrived though, as they had the strongest, most repugnant smell of plastic!
Yep, wobbly arm cam at work again. Cobbly-stoney streets and a bad wheel! I wish I had some of that sunshine now- it's gone all cold and englandy on us now!
Several of my students have shown up in those plastic shoes this year and I agree they do emit quite a toxic plastic smell!
Thanks for the lovely tour Lesley! I watched it with my chin on my hands, I really enjoyed. It's amazing what civilization the ancient Romans had, not to mention the architecture. You look quite chic and Italian with the sunglasses (most Americans have glasses like bikes on their noses).
Oh I'm glad you enjoyed. Pity about the iffy image - it's so clear and beautiful on my computer.
I creased with laughter at the 'bike' bit! it's true! hahahaha But I live in Italy where a vast majority of the world's sunglasses are manufactured, so I can easily avoid bicycle syndrome. LOL
Lesley, you always make me feel like I've been there, and I always watch your videos twice. I've just got to go to Italy. I must! ALso, I hope every viewer takes a moment to read your description. Thermal baths: Sounds good to me. I can't remember either. :-)
Italy does have some incredible beauty that is for sure...maybe there's just too much and that's why I stil can't think of what those things are called! hahaha
Ha ha ha.. Great video.. and very very interesting!! Thanks for sharing.. I loved walking there with you.. after all, I DO live in a Roman town.. :) and the nature round the lake is spectacular.. :)
I would assume the houses here in Colchester were built in a similar style.. I'm sure I recognised some of those red tiles here and there.. Thanks again..
Yes, they did.. I just came back to see if you had replied.. the e-mails weren't working at the time.. :) Luckily they are now.. :) The Romans never had such problems.. :)
What was the age of the ruins and what was the huge building used for? When I see your roadtrip videos it makes me feel so miniscule in the scheme of things. I thought gelato was like a sorbet kind of thing, the cones I saw people eating looked like soft serve icecream. It looked so yummy...how did you pass it up?
Well the poet Catullus built it in the 1st century BC, so the ruins are just over 2000 years old. The area was inhabited well before then though, as there are also neolithic (bronze age) relics and cave and rock paintings all over the region.
Gelato is Italian (sorbetto =sorbet) for ice cream, which is typically creamier and softer than what is served in the US. And I didn't pass it up! I just didn't film me eating it! hahaha didn't want the camera to get sticky :)
what a beautiful place. If I ever make it to Italy, I'm looking you up and I hope you just give me a list of these places over a cup of espresso so I can meet you in person. I want to see them all. Did you know Italian before you moved or learned as you went along?
I studied Italian for about 3 years at a local junior college, but was very difficult to grasp (after 40 brain no longer a sponge!) - so I also immersed myself with RAI television, Italian movies and music. But I really didn't learn to speak the language until I moved here, and am still learning.
How gorgeous. I jusr love ruins. The caves reminded me of Jericho where some Monks had never left for over 30 years. I collect statues and pillars. And this small screen did not do this justice so yep, on to full screen (FS) you went lol! You are blessed to live there. Ooooh a photographers paradise!
You should see how many of those pillars and columns there are just strewn about as if they were an annoyance! Most Roman sites were pillaged through the ages- mostly due to early recyclers- and later Napoleon's armies, so seeing all those things outside a museum is pretty spectacular. :)
Is it a constant state of awareness to live in such an ancient, historic place? Do you ever forget for awhile and then suddenly remember? I think I would be utterly giddy most of the time!
Well I live in a rather hectic city and indeed sometimes I forget, but I walk around the corner (literally) and there is a huge villa from the 18th century - not ancient - but old enough to remind me where I am....
Thank you so much for reposting. Northern Italy is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me much, of Sonoma County California except that we don't have 400 year old stone walls.
Italy is very similar to California topographically and climate -wise, minus the desert - and the stone walls in this video are about 2000 years old! :)
Thanks kind lady, it's easily one of my top 5 spots to visit near my home - I wish I could share the wonderful scents in the air, the lemons and cypress and wood-burning pizza ovens!
I am so glad you reposted this! I love that fancy castle--can you go inside? Mmm, gelato! Great way to end a day. Your brother IS very talented as well. xo

My wife is pretty much the same, she dismisses anything thats less than 400yrs old and always laughs when people talk about the "rich history" of white Australia. She's English and studies medievil history.
Ah, more rock carressing! :-) Beautiful! How did you get the ariel shot at 7:45? Did you work out the thermal baths, spa, hot spring thing in the end? :-) I have so many friends who go to Lake Garda for their holidays.. and now I realise why! Thanks for sharing! xxx
I just can't help but touch those ancient stones! UGH! the thought that you had to sit through a video and mention something 'at 7:45' - bless you and your attention span on this muddy compressed lump! Anyway - it was a a diagram of the villa - no helicopters for moi!
Funny, I edited out a part where I talk about how popular Lake Garda is for German tourists! Guess I was right! :)
No, no, no. I had no feeling of time having elapsed! I had to go back to find the time so that you would know which bit I meant :) Now you say it was a diagram, I see that it is. LOL. Silly me. Yes, the Krauts love Lake Garda - and Gelato!
The Germans call it "soft eis" .. it's squeezed through a small hole into your cornet - which probably explains why you only really find vanilla and not chocolate :-)
