  • I find these tutorials really helpful, but I have one question. Is there a specific type of PS you use? or does it not really matter?

  • @iamyou0 I've been using PS since CS2. Now I am on CS5. just the matter of practice, they can do pretty much the same thing.

  • THank you so much for all the tutorials :D and the links you previously sent me about the overlaying colors! Helps!

  • @Yiffboy Will send you some useful articles.

  • @idrawgirls Thank you so much!

  • How do u make shortcuts?

  • @WhiteDigits Oh yeah, coming soon.

  • I love all of your artwork and tutorials, they've helped me improve so much! Thank you for taking the time to make all of these great videos! :D

  • @ElektronikRainbow No problem, glad they are helpful. Peace! ;-)

  • @idrawgirls Thanks for the support Xia. I appreciate you getting the word out to your audience about the voting. keep up the awesome work. your demos & tips are very helpful

  • @cartoonblock No problem. Good luck with everything. ;-)

  • Please do a tutorial on how to paint horses and their poses. i have a hard time painting horses. Thx.

  • @mroneniceguy Horses are hard in general, you have to go to see them in real life and sketch when you get a chance. Then use a lot of references because they are the most beautiful creatures and they are the hardest to draw and paint.

  • Avatarsss, we hate them, preciousss! ...rly, why blue? :P

  • Color will be much better to use than overlay :P

  • Nice tutorial, I kind of prefer selecting the part I want a different color with a lasso tool and pressing CTRL+U though. It has a less monochromatic effect on the color IMO(granted a little painting correction may still be needed sometimes).

  • its a universal phase to start out in greyscale 1st, putting down the tone THEN the color..

old masters started out with drafting before they can actually touch the paints.

  • @jakobweiq True to that.

  • @jakobweiq indeed, if it is "greyscale" you can put the color before the tone :P

  • I have a problem with drawing things from imagination. I have to look at something for reference. -_-

  • @Ketsado Practice

  • @Ketsado eeeeeyup, same happens to me, all you gotta do is keep practicing and you will eventually learn how to do stuff from imagination, lets say you use references to make bodies, and as you practice it will become easier to do that from imagination, you can notice that because you start drawing that much better than you did before, though probably not as good as you do with reference (yet)

    :)

  • @JosePablo24 Thanks for the input man, i'm going to major in animation and i know im going to need to be good at coming up with characters off the top of my head. I'll try drawing everyday and hopefully ill get better =)

  • @Ketsado Great! ^^

I also want to improve and draw everyday!

but i just barely draw once a week T_T pretty lame, ha...

  • Another Great video :D !!

Please make a tutorial on shortcuts !

  • @radio667 OK thx

  • question what is that color ring thingy that pops out around your cursor?

  • @BloodyDIMISIS55 It's new in CS5, when you use the colorpicker (alt) it shows the circle, your current color on the lower half and the color you're picking on the upper half. It's a good feature, you can compare colors fast.

  • Thank you for making this video, I've always wonder how you do it.

  • @kevino025 NO, this is not necessary how I do it. This is just a tip, not the whole solution. Don't rely on color layer, or any layer for that matter. That is not the point of this video. There are many ways. Watch all my videos and you will probably find out. When I do a concept painting there are a lot of process involve, it will take hours to explain just one way. Best way is you have to be able to paint on normal layer. ;-)

  • Wow, thats really helpful

  • great as always, i personaly would love to know how you make a shortcut to make it open a new layer and set it to a different mode.

    cheers!

  • @erezkz OK

  • @idrawgirls hi i wanted to know how to vary the thickness of the line tool in photoshop cs5.5 because when i choose the line tool its allways fixed on like 1px line

  • @hasula202 I never use line tool, I use brushes. "[" for smaller, "]" to increase the size

  • I would like to see a tutorial on shortcuts :)

  • its not fair! when i draw girls i get arrested :(

  • @DN4etERnity XD Nice one

  • that shortcut thing sounds awesome, specially when you changed the opacity.

  • Great tutorial man :)

I think a lot of people can get use out of this, if they don't know about it already :)

  • Pretty cool tip about painting in color mode to paint 50% grey first. Thanks. Do you recommend all digital paintings to be done in Greyscale first and then do The Color you just showed? Thanks.

  • @ComicsLegend No, not necessary. But if it helps, it's cool. Try to treat it like real painting is better for developing your skill. Though it's good to know short cut when time is limited.

  • @idrawgirls so what is the difference between color and overlay? i didnt quiet get it

all i know is that i make a lot of different layers when im going to color , and use leyer modes depending on what looks better, for example a red would look better in X mode in the robe, and skin would look better in mode "light"

  • @JosePablo24 Color mode only changes the color of what you put it on top of. Overlay mode changes the color and value of what you put it on top of.

You may have noticed that there are separation lines when picking your mode. This is because each mode in one section does similar things to the other modes in that section. For example darken, multiply, color burn, linear burn, and darker color are all in the same section because they all darken the layer underneath, just in slightly different ways

  • @Lydomina oh nice, thanks

so if i did something in wrong values, or i want to change the overall value of what i did (because lets say that i did it in some white background so i did it all way too light), then i choose overlay with a darker value, but if values are perfect and i just want to color i use color mode, right?

  • @JosePablo24 I wouldn't recommend that, you can't easily control values with an overlay layer. I mean you could do that, it's just not that ideal IMO. I'd suggest using certain adjustment layers for that(brightness/contrast, curves, etc.), or you could just paint in the correct values on a normal layer :).

  • @Lydomina oh yes, painting on the correct values is the ideal thing to do :P

and well, i did the curves thingy but it also increases contrast between lights and darks (somehow), so i lost the smooth edges, somehow xD (when i did that it was with my first digital drawing ever, lol)

so, color layer only affects saturation and hue, while overlay affects saturation hue and value, cool to know =)

  • @JosePablo24 Curves takes some experimentation to get right. I use to do GFX design before using PS to paint so I'm used to using that kind of stuff.

I think you'll probably come up with something that works best for you if you keep practicing.

Did you try brightness/contrast BTW? It has separate sliders for just brightness and just contrast. You can just mess with the brightness slider if you don't want any contrast changes.

  • @Lydomina cool, im interested in trying to do GFX sometime, making logos can result useful and stuff =)

and nope, i didnt see the brightness/contrast for some reason, so, thanks for that

  • @JosePablo24 I just explain in the vid. Overlay will change your value, color will not. But as I say, knowing the principle is more valuable because you can apply the "know how" to any painting programs or traditional. These are just tools that gets you there fast. There is no one way to achieve the result, there are many. ;-)

  • @idrawgirls i wonder if by "the principle" you mean knowing how the shadows and lights work :P

anyway, i saw you pmed me, i will check that so thank! you are so caring and supportive! ^^

  • Nice mic! I can listen to you without my ears hurting. :O

    Thanks always for these tutorials. : }

  • @artaddict2 New one, finally.

  • Comment removed
