Part of the humour in this joke is that he says that he doesn't make generalizations about people from other countries then continues to slip in sweeping generalizations about Scottish people, you can actually hear the audience laugh as they understand the joke and you don't.
Another more subtle part of the joke is the fact that it almost seems excusable because he reffers to "us" and "our" when talking about scottish people as - at least in the joke - his real father was scottish. Get it now?
Comedians don't need to spell everything out when they're in small comedy clubs talking to intelligent people because they're not broadcasting to chavs, my favourite example, Peter Kay, has to use incredibly obvious jokes not only because he's a simpleton but because a large part of his audience are and if he were subtle they would not be able to figure out what the funny bit was.
I think the root of the problem is not Stewart being 'racist' but you being an idiot.

Part of the humour in this joke is that he says that he doesn't make generalizations about people from other countries then continues to slip in sweeping generalizations about Scottish people, you can actually hear the audience laugh as they understand the joke and you don't.
Another more subtle part of the joke is the fact that it almost seems excusable because he reffers to "us" and "our" when talking about scottish people as - at least in the joke - his real father was scottish. Get it now?

Comedians don't need to spell everything out when they're in small comedy clubs talking to intelligent people because they're not broadcasting to chavs, my favourite example, Peter Kay, has to use incredibly obvious jokes not only because he's a simpleton but because a large part of his audience are and if he were subtle they would not be able to figure out what the funny bit was.
I think the root of the problem is not Stewart being 'racist' but you being an idiot.

Stewart Lee wasn't being out there and clever doing this performance quite the opposite. If it's done on a stage and not directed at a particular individual how can that be racist. Jim Davidson once asked a venue to move it's disabled members of the audience to be moved from the front as they would 'spoil his act'.
In other words, most of his act consisted of mocking disabled people and he couldn't justify it so felt uncomfortable with their presence.
In contrast Stewart Lee credited his Scottish audience with the intelligence to both understand and laugh at the routine.
If you can't see the difference between irony and hypocrisy I pity you.

Yeah to be honest, I don't really like Jim Davidson as his jokes normally aren't funny ( the punch line usually is a bad accent or a unfunny racial comment)but if he was funny I'd laugh, regardless of who they were about! It's not Davidsons tone that seperates him from Boyle, it's the fact he just doesn't tell any funny jokes! Therefore isn't funny!

You just don't get it unfortunately. This is one of the most ballsy stand-up routines I've ever seen but if you don't understand the outrageous gravity of certain statements it would seem kinda dull. He's a true, honest and pioneering comedian who walks the more interesting and dangerous edges of comedy and doesn't get bogged down in the banal trough of shit that gets churned out on fuckin' comedy/quiz(?)/panel shows constantly.
