I have 3 quarts I canned last weekend, I'm going to wait about 2 more weeks and see how they are. I did mine in chicken broth so we will see what happens. Thank you for testing this out.
i wonder, can you substitute hot dogs for corned beef in a hash situation? Ill be canning hash today or tomorrow and now this crazy vid has me thinking! If it tasted decent it sure would cut the cost DRAMATICALLY!!!
Today was our first attempt at pressure cooking and we decided to do 3 jars packed (16) slim hot dogs and 4 jars of Smoked Sausages (8). We figured we couldn't go wrong with already cooked items for our first attempt. The Smoked Sausages are fantastic. We haven't tried the hot dogs yet but all in due time.
Hey Iron Head. Maybe you can explain something to me. I know every blue book, or canning book says you have to cook meat for 90 minutes. But hot dogs are already cooked. Do you think cooking them for an hour and a half is a little redundant? . I know we are going to get the chatter from the Ball Blue Book bible worshipers but, do we really have to cook the ever loving shit out of our meat? do you think we can cook them for less time? and still be safe?
@Meldagon1 maybe...i dont know......i just came up with the idea and tried it for the first time.....would be cool if it could be shorter canning time......i might next time try half(45 minutes) and see what happens....great question
@ironhead41 the 90 minutes isn't about cooking the meat. it's about making sure there is adequate time for the center of the meat in the jar to reach a high enough temperature to kill the botulism spores. the whole point of pressure canning is to kill anything in the jar that might cause spoilage. :-)
@Meldagon1 Well, in theory, yes. In reality...know how many pathegens float around, touch the hot dog, coming out of the wrapper, into the "sterilized jar" millions! And you don't even know it, or me. So, with that said, if the whole package (jar, contents, lid) are not sterelized for enough time, all it takes is for a couple of microbes to start breeding, and BANG. I'd pressure can it for whatever it says to do meat at, in pints, or in quarts, to be safe. I don't want to hurt anyone, or me
You heat it to the point where the heat transfers to the center of the bits of food. Cooking w/o water seems like a bad idea because heat conduction is a lot slower when there's no water to circulate the heat.
Canning something and claiming success because the result tastes OK & the lids sealed is silly. The issue is bacterial, which may not always grow enough to be a problem happen depending on how warm it is where you store your jars, and how long it incubates, etc.
ok I canned Jordon all beef natural casing Red hot dogs. And they swelled up just like on your video, the casing all split but that’s happens when you boil them. But when I opened them they had shrunk down to the point they were all 1 hot dog. And tasted like I boiled them for 1 ½ hours. The taste was less then what I expected. So I say it was a fail. Canning dogs may not be for all brands of wieners.
@Meldagon1 mine also shrunk to normal size but tasted like they were grilled.........we eat them right out of the jar, no reheating.......sorry yours didnt didnt work out the way you wanted.......i applaud you for trying
I think maybe if you slit the skin of the hotdogs, they will not swell up, as the meat will have room to breath in the casing, love the video and the bacon idea is a excellent one. Thanks, will definately have to try that.
You can can wieners, ring bologna, sausage patties or sausage links. Even hamburgers. We've canned them all, just make sure you brown the sausage patties, links, or hamburgers before putting in jars. Add 3 T of grease from the frying to each quart jar and process 90 min at ten pounds. Ring bologna can be cold packed with a little water in ea. qt.. You brown loose hamburger and pack loosely in quart jar. Works great if you need some burger for a hot dish or sloppy joes
If you stop wiggling them wieners around you wouldn't have to worry about them swellin up!!!! Don't you remember how sex was invented . A cave man got some mud on his johnson a proceeded to rub it off ,,,,,,, well the rest is history!!!
My kids eat a lot of the vienna sausages, and it looks like the same process. Thanks. Try some more stuff....lets see what could you can next...ummm...cheesecake?
Wow--you'll try just about anything....do you take request? My husband remembers bacon and eggs in a can from service--any chance you might try to do something with eggs? I also love the idea for the pickled bologna.
Keep at it , you have us all hooked on your canning with Ironhead videos!
I wonder if you browned ground meat turkey(GMT) if you could can it after is was cooked so you could take a can of tmater sauce dump a jar of gravel (precooked GMT) That GMT is innexpensive light on the bad stuff and very tasty.
That's awesome! Next time hot dogs go on sale, I'm buying a bunch and canning 'em! Great idea...glad you thought of it. Those empty jars in your canner, you could have canned three jars of sterile saline...great for cleaning wounds, flushing debris out of your eye, etc.
finally gonna try cannin first time. Remember from couple you your first vids most. But do you screw lids/bands down tight or put them down just snug and tighten down after take out and cool or just tightne them all the way down before you can?
Hot diggity damn! You drink Pabst too?! I thought I was the last of the hold-outs!

Hot dogs are dirt cheap right now, I wa thinking about getting an electric pressure cooker and 100 packs of hot dogs,

Hahaha! The PBR in the background is a nice touch! But that does look like a handy way to create shelf stable 'dogs.
