I really like the new Citroen c5.But this comparison is not fer.The citroen c5 is on sale since 2008 and the passat in the video is on sale for almost 6 years. So it is normal that the citroen is better then the passat in every way.We have to wait for the new passat model 2011 and then we will see.If you people want to know which of these cars is better i suggest you go test drive both of this cars. The car that you think is better at the end buy it.
The main difference between Passat and C5 is that Passat makes you feel depressed when you see it or sit inside it. C5 makes you feel special. Its very easy to fall in love with and it has a soul and a very strong personality. Something that German cars often lack...
frankly i have seen the last BMW 320 d and the plastic inside are not really good if you compare with the french cars actual , for example ,even a renault megane has best interior plastic than the BMW .
the french cars actual have done so much progress during the last 10 years than it s a pity to see the critics about them .....
for the citroen c5 ,i have not enough money it would be in my garage !
i hate ugly VW and image of used BMW and Mercedes. But damn that german cars are so good. i mean not service reliability (many japan cars are probably better) . But when you drive german cars, they are very solid and ergonomics are incredible, you have far less fatigue then any other cars. I dont want to buy German cars so i cheat myself with Anglo-German Fords for a 3 decade :) I buy Ford, German car but nobody believes it is German :). Why i dont want buy German?Because everyone buys :)
I'd have this above the German rivals. Looks a damn sight nicer than the BMW and I would say bolder than the A4 and C-Class (although them 2 are really nice looking). And I love that steering wheel. Nice to see a little of that French quirk in it along with the rear window. Although the Alfa 159 might just steal the crown for me.
I dont understand this video. Why do they say that C5 is about the same as Passat? Once you sit from C5 to Passat you feel like sitting in a cheap plastic city cars. Its not even in the same league.
I have a C5 and it's not very German at all - it's been much better built and more reliable than any of the German cars I've had, let alone Vauxhall/Ford which are even further behind.
Brands like Delahaye, Bugatti, Talbot, Hispano Suiza, Hotchkiss, Delage, Voisin, Delaunay Belleville, Ballot, amongst many others, were the most luxurious and powerful cars in the world. They were more pieces of arthan cars. A lot of world celebrities, kings or actors owned these French cars. It's WW2 which ruined everything.ts
I appreciate German cars. Reliable and efficient, for the most part I own 2 BMW'S. I'am also a big Citroen fan. When you drive an XM or a CX on long distances, like Paris Marseille, you fully appreciate. It's like a flying carpet. Citroens are more comfy than German cars in general. Their LHM hydraulic system is unique. They sold their licence to other car makers, like Rolls.Silver shadows for instance are equiped with the Citroen suspension system. French cars were the best before 1939.
ya C5 is one of the best in Europe. i realley dont like german cars maybie Mercedes and Audi. Passat is a realley hard car. I mean you float in a Citroen and but in a passat in a few hour of driving your spine will hurt if you will drive on bumpy roads.
The C6 which is a pure genuine Citroen product, is far more superior to the C5. French engineers don't need German technology . Citroen is the sole car maker in the world, to produce estate cars with hydraulic suspension, and was the first in the world to launch a car with this system : The DS , which is considered as a milestone. One of the top 10 most famous cars in automobile industry. This dumb Anglosaxon fascination with German cars is really boring.
Maybe because French cars are mostly made by Arab hands in French factories. Engeenering and technology are very good, PSA are the first diesel engines makers in the world, but manufacturing, even if a lot of improvments were made these last decades, still needs to be amelioriated.
my father had a Peugot 807 with gps and the gps was 4 times broken and one of the doors didn't closed good...we are now driving a VW Sharan for 3 years and there was never something brkoen!
well we have Citroen Xantia 2.0 HDi a have to say thats a good car never drove in 807, but Xaantia has never broke down. Well ony once and that was because of a loose oil pipe. it has around 105.000 kilometers on it now.
3:05 C5 is the best citroen ever.....are you jocking mister????? the C6 worth much more than that C5, and yet C6 is a tastless car compared to DS CX and SM....I can't believe he just said such a BS. Where has he been?
I have a Xantia HDI year 2000. A little bit austere(style) and still no problem after 150000 km. Except usual garage verifications. The engine is still almost as nervous as the first day. And the speed is above all speeds authorized in europe.
I prefer Diesel engine. Citroen invented the DS a long time ago.
The C5 is a nice looking motor, I just hope the electrics don;t go wrong as they invariably do on all French cars. The C6 though is too quirky I think, yes it may have a nice ride, but nobody is buying them, and that's because it's too different and looks too much of a "go back in time" CX, which was a hideous car.
Sorry Mike, got to disagree about the C5 being better than the C6. The C6 gives you a far superior ride and the looks of the C6 are better in every department.
This C5 Citroen is made extremely strongly and it is actually a pretty heavy car. I was very impressed with the quality both inside and out when I went in one. the C5 Citroen got outstanding results in the EU crash test and was awarded one of the highest marks and also of course got the full five stars.
The Modern HDI power plants are actually very good old ones not so much. New ones however are used in many many cars. Even BMW use the 1.6 HDI engine in the new MINI. They are great engines. People spout the reliability issues about French cars constantly and it is deserved. However you are spouting rubbish. Modern Citroens have come a long way. I went from a VW Golf to a Citroen C4, C4 has been more reliable and build quality isn't really that different.
dont talk crap...french cars are much more better nowdays than germans, because they are equal by quailiti but german cars are more expencive... now ppl chose french cars cause they are beautifle, realible and good build qualiti. just look at this C5,C6 then look at Laguna, then Megane even look at 407 and 308! they are awesome! i would love sport Laguna 2.0 DCI and it has 175hp so imagine that with 6 litters ond 100km
It is true I have had wonderful reliability with my almost 10 year old Seat Toledo at 167,000 miles. I know of someone who has had total reliability with this C5. He pulls caravans for more than a year in UK, Spain and france and loves the quality and comfort.I would buy this beautiful C5 anytime.
This new Citroen C5 is a superbly beautiful and well made car. I have been in it so I know. I previously mentioned about the man I know who travels a lot and he has had a C5 for well over a year and always had 100% reliability. It is an extremely comfortable and safe car.
I would have agreed with you five or six years ago but they have moved on in leaps and bounds. Of course I cannot see into the future but having seen the changes in management ethos, design and of course manufacture I would be massively surprised if these cars did not last as long and run as reliably as any BMW/Merc/VW.
the problem is these people are testing NEW cars- brand new, in my experience there's often a gulf btw perceived quality and actual quality- perceived quality was great in the just changed Renault megane when it came out- autocar, what car they all said Renault had raised quality to 'Golf' standards- a few years down the line and things don't seem so any more- the cars have sub standard reliability and have depreciated accordingly- the Golf has not. I would also buy any Honda or Lexus.
I drive a Seat Toledo TDiSE and bought it new at the end of 1999. It's a fantastically reliable and comfortable car. It has done 168,000 miles and it may well do twice that at least. Over 60 mpg on long runs and plenty of performance.
When I say 'German', of course i include seat and skoda- as they are in effect VWs- also European Fords are more or less German cars, though Opels/Vauxhalls seem to carry the GM ethos of make 'em cheap, sell 'em cheap, which is why they're good new and terrible if they haven't been looked after meticulously.
The worst for that is Kia. Cheap cars are good in concept and when you buy it new however where I work there is a saying... If you buy a new Kia 6 months later you'll have a 10 year old car. I do honestly believe though that the new Citroens have come along so far that it is unfair to base opinion upon their older models. Either way everyone has an opinion which they are entitled too and because cars are such a personal thing there are very few opinions you can knock.
The new Citroen C5 is extremely heavily and strongly built. It did excellently in the EU crash tests. They have genuinely made a very big effort with this car. As I mentioned, it shares engines with Peugeot and Ford etc. Nowadays cars have become very international.
citroen knows how to make reliable cars - xantia is was one of the most reliable cars in its class (and still is - if you look at rankings for cars 10-12 years old xantia is 50-60 places ahead of passat together with accord and primera).
you must be joking, a passat b5 97- is better in everyway than the xantia, all french cars are very unreliable and probably citroen is the worst. and the other two arent better than a 10-12 year old passat either
I bet you own a xantia and you are very upset to hear that it is rubbish, them cars are so ugly i dont even see any on the road cause they are all scrapped.
No i dont own Xantia myself - in fact i have Toyota Auris. My dad have Xantia and its very reliable - thats a fact. Just look at Tuv 2008 reliability report: 28.Honda Civic14,3% 29.Citroen Xantia14,4% 30.Mercedes-Benz S14,6% 31.Mazda 62615,2% 32.BMW 715,4% 32.Honda Accord15,4% 63.Renault Mégane20,4% 66.Renault Scénic20,5% 67.Volvo S70/V7020,7% 67.VW Sharan20,7% 67.VW Passat20,7% Whats there to discuss?
that must be some 80s passat in 67. and there is no way xantia is in 29 above merc, vw,mazda, volvo and honda i dont know what this list is all about but it does not make any sense
Regarding Kia, maybe 5 years ago, but certainly not today. You would be surprised by just how much effort they've put into their new cars. Literally bounds and leaps ahead of their predecessors.
I think this C5 Citroen is one of the most beautiful cars. It is very solidly built. I kmow of someone who has owned this car for more than a year. He pulls a caravan and does big mileage. His C5 Citroen has always been totally reliable. He loves the comfort of the car etc.
I love this new Citroen C5. I was very impressed when I checked one out in a Dublin showroom. A beautiful well made solidly built car.Domagoj Dukec and his team did a wonderful job. I know of someone has has had one of these for quite a while. He does big mileage. He is thrilled with this car and so far total reliability in his case.
I bought a Seat Toledo TDiSE new near the end of 1999. The car has done 167,000 miles now and is amazingly reliable and comfortable. The quantities of free extras still work perfectly. The car still does over 60 mpg on long runs. The Passat is very much related, so I have respect for all VW sourced cars.
Domagoj Dukec seems to have been the main designer of this car. There was probably a team working together at Citroen. A superb looking car. When I saw it in a showroom it really looked lovely in a type of charcoal black.
You think this is annoying, it doesn't even come close to how vexing and pathetic Fifth Gear is, fuck me i hate that show and its presenters. At least their not trying to copy Top Gear, ey?
Sorry RiiDDiiM everyone is entitled to their different views. I personally like Fifth Gear and it's presenters. Thank goodness they don't go the Top Gear route.
all VW are soooooo boooooring. Transport for philistines with no colours in theire lives. No sense of style or beauty. And please don't toss this myth about quality. VW is far from quality.
Haha, you sound like a sore, jealous loser. Volkswagen has outstanding quality, what do you drive, and old piece of American shit I guess. Any car has colours dude and I definitely didn't know you could talk, I mean all the things you listed are the main reasons why customers by this car. Check your facts dipshit.
Listen you midage loser, looks like your fucking tiny brain was smashed by VW and you still can't recover. This was on 80ties when VW was a symbol of quality and car for Volk. These days are long time go. If you would know anything about cars you wouldn't act so stupid. Today VW is one of most unreliable Europe made cars and is no longer car for Volk in preis. I was testing both models myself and I know what I'm saying. This Passat in compare whit current C5 is absolute crap.
Does anyone know who the true designer of the new C5 is? I thought he was Belgian, then somebody told me he was a Croation who had worked at Audi.then someone told me Belgium must have been involved.i saw a picture of the Croatian man next to a sketch of the C5 on Google.
The Citroen C5 has just been crowned "Semperit Irish Car of the Year 2009". I truly love the looks and the comfort of the C5. The driver's seat is so comfortable and the car is very well built.
I just found out, that the C5 did win that award, but took second place overall to a small Toyota; which would be very understandable in Japan.the Citroen company have every reason to be very proud though.
Comparing Citroen with WV is like comparing French food with German no point one is exquisite and refined the other just some food but nothing special
It does compare in quality (and subjectively on looks too) to the bmws/audis etc but it is in a lower price bracket with other fwd motorway mile munchers like the Passat. Comfortwise the C5 eats the competition alive though.
True indeed. C5 is the best in it`s class when it comes to comfort.
However, I miss in Hydractive 3+ an option that Xantia Active had (sport mode and in it no BMW let alone Audi of that era can beat it when cornering it realy was cornering machine and you could have both comfort and sportiness in the same car), sure the C5 has also some sort of sport mode but it is far away frome that of Xantia Activa`s.
bens 1972 I totally agree with you! I`d pick the C5, actually I think it`s the best car in it`s class for a price like that, remember that this isn`t luxury car like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus,...
Mondeo or 3-series for me.

you must be joking, a passat b5 97- is better in everyway than the xantia, all french cars are very unreliable and probably citroen is the worst. and the other two arent better than a 10-12 year old passat either
linas1 2 years ago
unreliable? german reliability statistic shows something else - xantia is waaaay more reliable than passat.
You must be joking - Accord worse than Passat? In what way.
rasiakwood 2 years ago
XANTIA
Body: Build quality is below-average; some may be rusting
Engine/Gearbox: Injector problems on diesels - smoky exhaust or poor acceleration; noisy high mileage engines; erratic engine management units; oil leaks.
Other: Neglected hydraulics will mess up the steering, braking and suspension systems - costly to fix; dodgy electrics, especially window lifts
the xantia only has 1 star out of a possible 5 while the passat has 4.5 out of 5 in reliability.

Rusting - haha you dont have idea what are you talking about. Or you joking :)
rasiakwood 2 years ago
I bet you own a xantia and you are very upset to hear that it is rubbish, them cars are so ugly i dont even see any on the road cause they are all scrapped.

rasiakwood 2 years ago
that must be some 80s passat in 67. and there is no way xantia is in 29 above merc, vw,mazda, volvo and honda i dont know what this list is all about but it does not make any sense
linas1 2 years ago
80s passat are better in terms of reliability tha new ones.
And no this is not 80s passat - its reliability ranking for cars 9-11 years old made by German organisation TUV.
rasiakwood 2 years ago
Statistics don't lie.
12OclockLow 2 years ago
thats because nobody owns a XANTIA ....
wtf ?
when you sell millions of cars its clearly more likely for something to go wrong with the certain model
oldirtybastard213 2 years ago
clearly you dont have idea how TUV tests cars.

Regarding Kia, maybe 5 years ago, but certainly not today. You would be surprised by just how much effort they've put into their new cars. Literally bounds and leaps ahead of their predecessors.

Bullshit! French diesels are best possible in Europe and even little kid will tell you that.

I think this C5 Citroen is one of the most beautiful cars. It is very solidly built. I kmow of someone who has owned this car for more than a year. He pulls a caravan and does big mileage. His C5 Citroen has always been totally reliable. He loves the comfort of the car etc.

Check what a crapy noisy sound comes from Passat when she drives and how quiet is C5 :))))))
dorotejs 2 years ago
I love this new Citroen C5. I was very impressed when I checked one out in a Dublin showroom. A beautiful well made solidly built car.Domagoj Dukec and his team did a wonderful job. I know of someone has has had one of these for quite a while. He does big mileage. He is thrilled with this car and so far total reliability in his case.

It's something called diesel idiot.

I bought a Seat Toledo TDiSE new near the end of 1999. The car has done 167,000 miles now and is amazingly reliable and comfortable. The quantities of free extras still work perfectly. The car still does over 60 mpg on long runs. The Passat is very much related, so I have respect for all VW sourced cars.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
Domagoj Dukec seems to have been the main designer of this car. There was probably a team working together at Citroen. A superb looking car. When I saw it in a showroom it really looked lovely in a type of charcoal black.

You think this is annoying, it doesn't even come close to how vexing and pathetic Fifth Gear is, fuck me i hate that show and its presenters. At least their not trying to copy Top Gear, ey?
RiiDDiiM 3 years ago
Sorry RiiDDiiM everyone is entitled to their different views. I personally like Fifth Gear and it's presenters. Thank goodness they don't go the Top Gear route.

Vw Passat is sooo absolete
magnetau 3 years ago
all VW are soooooo boooooring. Transport for philistines with no colours in theire lives. No sense of style or beauty. And please don't toss this myth about quality. VW is far from quality.
dorotejs 2 years ago
Haha, you sound like a sore, jealous loser. Volkswagen has outstanding quality, what do you drive, and old piece of American shit I guess. Any car has colours dude and I definitely didn't know you could talk, I mean all the things you listed are the main reasons why customers by this car. Check your facts dipshit.
malbert34 2 years ago
Listen you midage loser, looks like your fucking tiny brain was smashed by VW and you still can't recover. This was on 80ties when VW was a symbol of quality and car for Volk. These days are long time go. If you would know anything about cars you wouldn't act so stupid. Today VW is one of most unreliable Europe made cars and is no longer car for Volk in preis. I was testing both models myself and I know what I'm saying. This Passat in compare whit current C5 is absolute crap.

Does anyone know who the true designer of the new C5 is? I thought he was Belgian, then somebody told me he was a Croation who had worked at Audi.then someone told me Belgium must have been involved.i saw a picture of the Croatian man next to a sketch of the C5 on Google.
cattleman6420012000 3 years ago
The designer of the new Citroen C5 is definitely Domagoj Dukec (from Croatia). He worked some years at Audi.I saw a Google video with him.
cattleman6420012000 3 years ago
This really is a superb looking car.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
The Citroen C5 has just been crowned "Semperit Irish Car of the Year 2009". I truly love the looks and the comfort of the C5. The driver's seat is so comfortable and the car is very well built.
cattleman6420012000 3 years ago
I see that the new C5 Citroen has won "The Import Car of the Year 2008" in Japan.
cattleman6420012000 3 years ago
I just found out, that the C5 did win that award, but took second place overall to a small Toyota; which would be very understandable in Japan.the Citroen company have every reason to be very proud though.

Comparing Citroen with WV is like comparing French food with German no point one is exquisite and refined the other just some food but nothing special

C5 is class above 320 and Passat...cannot be compared.
derbigpr500 3 years ago
If i choose
1)C5
2)320
3)Passat
adrianlo3228 3 years ago
It does compare in quality (and subjectively on looks too) to the bmws/audis etc but it is in a lower price bracket with other fwd motorway mile munchers like the Passat. Comfortwise the C5 eats the competition alive though.
joeytwomugs 3 years ago
True indeed. C5 is the best in it`s class when it comes to comfort.
However, I miss in Hydractive 3+ an option that Xantia Active had (sport mode and in it no BMW let alone Audi of that era can beat it when cornering it realy was cornering machine and you could have both comfort and sportiness in the same car), sure the C5 has also some sort of sport mode but it is far away frome that of Xantia Activa`s.
Nevertheless my number 1 choice in this class!
tyraela115 3 years ago
bens 1972 I totally agree with you! I`d pick the C5, actually I think it`s the best car in it`s class for a price like that, remember that this isn`t luxury car like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus,...
Well done Citroen!!!!!

Mint show and awesome cars - Edd and Mike are true motoring legends - top blokes

The VW sounds a lot noisier if you listed at 2:09 and then the Citroen at 2:22
