It is not natural for a domesticated ferret to eat live prey items, from birth they have no hunting instincts, they must be trained and coaxed to become aggressive.
I've owned ferrets for 16 years, for the last 7 I've fed whole prey items, meaning frozen quail, frozen rats and frozen ducks.
I've owned male rats for 4 years, my ferrets show ZERO prey drive. They all play together in harmony, in fact it's often the male rats pin the ferrets with relative ease.

I love ferrets, but I also love rats. I love all animals in general really. I am totally OK with ferrets killing and eating rats because they are by nature meat eaters so they have to anyways to survive, but when some sick-minded person traps a rat and knowingly tortures and kills it with a ferret, filming it and posting on youtube for their own entertainment...that is just SICK and WRONG.
You people seem to have a hard time understanding that there actually is a difference between animals hunting other animals naturally and humans glorifying this stuff. I see what you mean. In the wild preys have the opportunity to escape from the hunter, while trapped in cages where they cant escape, they dont. That is a good point. However, some people say, before becoming domesticated, in this case ferrets, they were once wild polecats that can hunt the preys themselves in the wild. But now that some have become domesticated, they depend in humans and no longer good hunters. Im afraid if the ferrets wants to eat a live prey, they need humans to live feed it.

The same goes for other domesticated carnivores too like dogs and cats, except for the fact that most people choose to feed them canned/bagged food from the stores. At one point many of the ingredients used in those were animals too, like fish, chicken, beef, etc. I myself am not a vegetarian and I do eat meat quite often, but when I eat my food I always want to be sure the animals I am eating had a good life & they were not suffering long when killed.

It is WAY better for the ferret.

Animals take that risk because it isnt 100% gauranteed they'll die from attacking prey. there is a 100% gaurantee they'll die from not eating though. this is just my opinion, ppl are free to disagree, but i think its better to take the little chance of them getting bitten back and feed them raw then to feed them processed food thats not very nutritional for them and shorten their life.

Torturing rats, even if theyre meant to be live feed, are still cruel though, but I dont see these guys torturing them, they just simply trap them and put ferret in to eat.

@TieInterceptorPilot Well the thing is I wouldn't mind someone live feeding their ferret rats and mice but I definitely do think he should at least take this video off of youtube. Other people don't need to see this kind of stuff. At least the corpse was put to good use afterwards as the ferret ate it but I still feel really bad for the rat because in the wild if it encountered a predator it wouldn't have been trapped in a cage at the same time...

I see what you mean. In the wild preys have the opportunity to escape from the hunter, while trapped in cages where they cant escape, they dont. That is a good point. However, some people say, before becoming domesticated, in this case ferrets, they were once wild polecats that can hunt the preys themselves in the wild. But now that some have become domesticated, they depend in humans and no longer good hunters. Im afraid if the ferrets wants to eat a live prey, they need humans to live feed it.

The same goes for other domesticated carnivores too like dogs and cats, except for the fact that most people choose to feed them canned/bagged food from the stores. At one point many of the ingredients used in those were animals too, like fish, chicken, beef, etc. I myself am not a vegetarian and I do eat meat quite often, but when I eat my food I always want to be sure the animals I am eating had a good life & they were not suffering long when killed.

I suppose they could have meant for it to be entertaining as well but for the most part it is just educational.

It's a shame the rat wasn't given a fighting chance to be fair they had already caught it and you can remove a rat from an area as long as its 50Km outside its original holding. OMG why is every one so mad? This is what ferrets eat in the wild. These fellas are obviously from Europe and "ferreting" is a widely practiced sport there. "Ferreting" is where they use ferrets like hunting dogs to hunt rabbits. It is what they were domesticated to do. And these guy are doing the ferrets a favor by feeding them raw and not giving them that crap kibble that has been linked to causing all great deal of ferret illnesses. Raw is better for the ferrets.

@tpfastback not really, theres always a chance a rat can bite the ferret which in some cases results in ferret dying... so weighing up those odds its better just to feed ferret food than rats live lol.
and ferrets are used to flush out rabbits not kill them lol. they aint bred to be killers... its just in their nature ;x then again i fed a frog to my polecat and it was quite thrilling to watch... so i cant rly dissaprove of ur view, just saying live prey can always be a danger to ferrets =p

You can feed frozen thawed mice, rabbits rats etc. OR chicken, beef, pork, veal or any other meant for humans meat. As long as they get the 80% muscle 10%bone 10% organ. It is WAY better for the ferret.

i do see what you mean about how the ferret can get hurt, but those are the risks of life. Animals take that risk because it isnt 100% gauranteed they'll die from attacking prey. there is a 100% gaurantee they'll die from not eating though. this is just my opinion, ppl are free to disagree, but i think its better to take the little chance of them getting bitten back and feed them raw then to feed them processed food thats not very nutritional for them and shorten their life.
