In the original story, after guessing all the riddles correctly,John had to purify or cure the princess of her enchantment by throwing her into a tub and scrubing her--the first time she became a black swan, then a white swan with a black ring around her neck-the third and final time she was herself again--more lovely and sweeter than one could imagine.
