This is truly battle of the titans. I was eleven when this amazing 'battle' took place in Tokyo and I still remember it like yesterday. Those guys were competing at such high level that we probably will never see anything like that again. Definitely one of the greatest athletic events of all time.

Yah, this was a wonderful competition between the 2 of them, perhaps the greatest moment ever in the world championships. Remember as a 13 year old taking a day off school to watch this. Dont think my Dad had a clue as to why I was still babbling incoherently and full of energy trying to explain to him what happened when he came home from work. Wonderful.

I am old enough to have watched Carl Lewis on TV (from the UK) since 1981 and, even today, he remains the greatest sprinter & jumper than has ever lived in my opinion. Nobody else has shown the commitment, longevity and consistency that he achieved - quite a remarkable athlete - a credit to the sporting world.

Was he the greatest of all - no - there we only ever be one Daley Thompson. He will never be surpassed - he is the definition of the ultimate athlete. He never competed on home soil.
