  • thank you! im going to play Sleigh Ride tomorrow and this clip will help me a lot!!!

  • @yoshika0903

    great! have a great concert!

  • So nervous! Have to do this at my schools winter concert hope I dont mess up...

  • @NuClearNeRd34

Use lots of air, and whinny like you mean it! Remember, that whinny comes right after the crack of the whip in the tune, so think about how much that would sting and put that energy into the whinny. Make it loud! And good luck....

  • @NuClearNeRd34 Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson?

  • My band is going to play Sleigh Ride in a week or two. Im having a tough time doing it but or trumpet guide said to start with the valves already half down. Is it still ok to do this

  • @mileman34

Yes, that'll work, too. Use lots of air to make it as loud as you possibly can since with the valves halfway down the horn is much quieter. Good luck!

  • Great! Glad to help. Remember to put LOTS of air into the sound when those valves are halfway down... Good luck!

  • This was so helpful! I actually have to know this for sleigh ride in about a month and i wasnt even close :D thanks!

  • After with this sound you can start a tour around the world in concert.

  • @vitorio846

haha! Touring barns & farms worldwide!

  • I've also had to do this in a version of William Tell

  • The "horse whinny" is always fun - I've played it several times (on Sleigh Ride - where else in all of the musical repertoire is it called for other than just "horsing" around?!) - some of my efforts at the whinny (on Sleigh Ride) were better than others. After one that probably wasn't so hot I turned to the guy next to me and said: "Uh, I think I just played the perfect jack-ass whinny - definitely not a horse!"

  • @birdwellmusic

haha! you should post a vid on how to do the donkey-bray....

  • Hey there again! Ive heard of many techniques to do this, like certain valves only or how far too be pressed down. What ive found to be really sufficient is to have the 3rd valved pushed down half way, second valve pushed down 1/4 of the way and the 1st valve pushed down about 1/8 of the way down. I figured id share this cause the more you know the better right? :D

  • I'm lead trumpet at my school. we just played the song you were talking about at our christmas concert :D haha I watched your video to learn how to do the horse whinny at the end O; hahha:3

  • I recommend this video for everyone. Look up on youtube: El Animas playing El niño perdido. The trumpet soloist does really impressive sound effects, one of them being the horse whinny. It would be nice if you could post a video on how to do the effects he does

  • wow thanks alot this will help

  • I play lead at my school but I just can't get a hold of it even though I am a really good trumpet player(according to what everyone else says) and a have a range from the F# below the staff to a F# above the staff. I just can't get it to work

  • @Branon5

The trick is LOTS of air and valves halfway down. In the example, my bell is pointed away from the mic so you can't hear how loud it is. I should've used even more air. Using 1/2 valves is naturally quieter and harder to push the air through the horn, so you've really got to go for it. As you're descending, shake the horn fast at first, then slower as you get lower. Good luck!

PS: you can do this from a lower note, say an E (4th space) or D.... Doesn't have to be a high G...

  • Oh my. Why is it so hard for me?

I'm the first chair trumpet player in my school's symphonic band and i'm actually a very good trumpet player (like playing real notes) but i cant play the whinny! Cause yah know how when you're a trumpet player you naturally think "How often am i gonna need to practice that.. " Umm, Not.

The concert is 11 days away and i'm freakin out! Somebody should come play it for me:) aha

  • @oliviachaos

  • @jharnum This works really well with a french horn mouthpiece in an adapter.

  • that was really good and not fake like the tothers!!! loz

  • LOL!!!!

  • sounds just like a real horse

  • o.o omg xD ur da best

  • start lower then go higher

  • meh, that one doesnt sound right to me, the way i do it, i just half valve the 3rd valve, start on a lower note then go up and back down w/ the shake, sounds more real.

  • yeah, I agree. Starting low, then going high, then back low sounds more like a real horse. However, if you listen to recordings of Sleigh Ride, you'll hear it coming from high to low. Not much time to get it in, maybe. If you can make it sound more real, you gotta do it....

  • @jharnum I try to pulsate my lungs like I'm laughing really fast to add to realism. should I be doing this?

  • @redKELLYMHRCH

Sure, anything to make it sound more realistic. I've never tried it that way, but I think I will today. Thanks for sharing!

  • Huh, I'm doing sleigh ride. No one knows how to do it, not even our teacher. I'm going to be the only one who's going to be able to do it. Sweet :3

  • um, excuse me but can you tell me of any great b-flat monette trumpets and mouthpieces. Thank you.

  • you bet. the best place is to go to Monette's web site: monette (then the dot, then "net"--utube won't let u post web site names.)

They're quite expensive, but of course the mouthpieces are cheaper (but still way more expensive than anything else out there), and are some of the best mouthpieces available.

    Good luck!

  • A funny effect but I've only heard it in two recordings. Boston Pops / Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" as noted and the first jazz record, "Livery Stable Blues". My favorite horse? It's a toss up between Black Beauty and Mr.Ed.

  • haha! That's great. Thanks for the shout-out for "livery stable blues," an important trumpet recording. As to the Beauty/Ed debate, I'd have to go with Quick-Draw McGraw, the Hannah-Barberra cartoon horse. :-)

  • yah its easy to do

i do it all the time and it make my section leader mad :)

  • why? can he/she not do it?

  • O_O Oh my god, this is amazing. I'm so trying this at marching band tomorrow.

  • just bought a trumpet, been trying to make a sound on it for 2 days, but no sound. haha is there a technique? what i'm i doin wrong?

  • can you get a buzz w/ just your lips? Check out those vids..

  • yay :D tyyyyyy

  • omg i can do that!!

  • i can too! It's fun lawl

  • i thought it would be some thing else. i shall try this nxt time i practice

  • Thanks I Have To Doe This Tomarrow In Our Performance At The End Of Sleigh Ride... Thanks! I Use All Valves Half Down.

  • Haha I did that a few years ago.

  • I hold all three half way down.. and it works great

  • my sound seems to cut off after i try going down from the g half valve. anybody have tips?

  • that's priceless

  • Useful.. Thanks!

  • works best when you have 1st and 2nd valves half down

  • why?

  • whoa! Sorry about the totally late reply. This happens because w/ the valves halfway down, the airflow is altered and the notes don't "lock in" where they're supposed to because the air is no longer following through a tube of the same diameter. Hope this helps. Sorry for the lateness.... : - )
