my xp install takes about 10 seconds

Start-up on linux is always a bit slow. this is because of the many files have to be loaded. The Readahead technology made it quite faster. Fedora11 aims for a 20 second start-up. Thats the fastest boot-time I've ever heard of :-)

its booting off a livecd, and so is limited by the data rate of the cd drive.

its much faster when installed on a hard drive.
