A. Bening just LETS GO in this role, and when she's singing in the car, she nails that character. Give Annette Bening the Oscar for Best Actress, retroactive immediately! :) (did I use that word correctly in a sentence?)
@arneperschel Is it not common that some people would be arrogant in the best nation in the world? America has the number one economy and because of that it branches out giving the people the opportunity to have the choice to do what they like. We may not be the happiest or the smartest, but the freedoms that we have gave us an edge over other countries. So yes, some people take the way they live over the edge, but that's the same in every country that isn't living hand to mouth. Think about it

I was traveling on the subway 1 day in toronto, i like to ppl watch. Along the way to my destination, this middle aged gentlemen dressed in casual jeans and shirt, got on.
There were plenty of seats but he chose to stand, and vibe to his music by dancing and singing.
I found his courage and relaxed attitude to be fascinating.
People were laughing at him and looking at him like he was a freak.
I was applauding him the whole time mentally and whenever someone sings, i always have a flashback.
@trg18 Haha, you get that here in NYC, too. Many people are so reserved on the subway, like it's a library or something. Sure you don't want someone being a nuisance, but what's so bad about someone singing to their own music? People these days are so uptight because of economic stress, but they need to learn to loosen up again like in the old days. ;)

scoresby 33 knows the deal. Listen, this clip is clearly funny, the way she's singing to this tune, the gun on the seat. However it is not far off the mark on how many woman lead their lives. This man, Lester, was tired of being a doormat for this selfish, materialistic nut case. He simply showed her that he could act the same, and indulge in behavior that is more commonly seen in people in their early 20's.

Well, maybe you ought to start treating your husband with the respect he deserves, instead of having little girl fantasies about the hero. If you are so fuckin bored in your marriage, maybe you should have thought twice about getting married in the first place. Marriage isn't a fairytail. It is sad how husband's like the guy in this movie get deprived sexually and socially, while their wives try to control the relationship. American women are spoiled and have no sense of what a wife should be.
Blimey! I'm Australian. Chill out mate. I've been married for over thirty years. Since rude people seldom apologise, I won't be expecting an apology from you. My remarks are about the clip, not the whole film. Besides, I'd have to say the Spacey character was a tragic Peter Pan type. They drive adult women insane with their complete inability to man-up.
P.S. Marriage is not a "fairy-tale", especially if the woman, like the Bening character, is stuck with a middle-aged irresponsible man-boy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You're an idiot and a disgrace to Australia. She is stuck with a middle aged irresponsible man? No, she is fuckin board and wants new excitement. Her pussy gets wet for men with ambition and drive. How about a man who is loyal with a GOOD HEART. No, that's boring to these immature cunts who got married in the first place because they are in love with the idea of marriage, not the person. Too many stupid spoiled women don't appreciate what they have and always want a new challenge.

You also mention he was a "Peterman" type guy - whatever the fuck that means. I guess because he was intelligent and sensitive to others feelings that makes him weak. Thank God he put his foot down and stopped taking that shit. I would not have let that last 5 minutes. And you mention his type drives adult women insane. Well, maybe adult women ought to act like grown adults and not make such huge life altering decisions in the first place. If she wasn't ready to be a wife then she couldn't have.
Wow, scoresby33, you have major issues, chill out dude. I like how you attack some random poster for not treating her husband with the "respect he deserves" and attack american women in a sweeping generalization (please explain what a wife should be for men like me who don't know). People will have different opinions than you, and, as a part of growing into a mature adult, you need to learn to deal with these issues in a way other than calling people idiots and throwing temper-tantrums.
I'm sorry that you have some major issues yourself. I'm sorry you don't have any principles or convictions and you are merely a "YES" type person. It is a shame there are so many people in this world who are scared shitless to stand up for what they believe. It is obvious that you are a follower, Not a LEADER. Some people are meant to be followers. As for my comments on this clip and others - Actually, I got so many responses agreeing and thank me for coming out and telling the truth.
If Lester Burnham was driving her insane, then why didn't she just divorce him, instead of have an affair without telling him about it? Are you sure you even watched the film? He is a complete man, she is an incomplete woman who's only purpose in life is to wonder what others think of her. She has no personality but to follow commercial society which of course, makes her incredibly weak of character, and weak inside. Lester was trying to help her, but she hadn't the courage. Lester is the adult.
Lester is the adult?! Wow...really...is that why he's jerking off and fantasizing about his daughter's friend...this is a SAD movie with almost all of the characters being 'victims'---with the exception of Lester's daughter and her boyfriend...they are the only 'survivors'
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You have to remember, Lester was married to someone who was not interested in intimacy at all. She had evolved into a robot without feeling except of course her feelings for money. Lester fantasized because he'd forgotten about that part of his life. The real estate king had his own marriage falling apart because of a "money grubbing freak", just like Carolyn, only his was younger.
The lyrics are "fanned out" but it sounds like she says "found out." Maybe it's part of her character, getting the lyrics wrong. I mean, people do that in real life. God knows I've sung the wrong lyric to a song before thinking it was something else.
I don't really relate to Annette Bening's character in the movie otherwise, but I really liked this scene of her singing along to a Bobby Darin song in the car because I do that all the time. As a HUGE Bobby Darin fan, I'm always playing his music at full volume in the car and singing along at the top of my lungs!lol
Hey! I'm in my early forties, wouldn't be caught dead driving an SUV, and will never, ever own music by Bobby Darrin. But I know MANY Carolyns, so I understand what you mean. Annette was brilliant in this role, as was Kevin. And no one knew it at the time, but Kevin is obsessed with Bobby's music-which makes the dinner scene even funnier. He even did a biopic on Bobby ('Beyond the Sea'), which was a flop. But this film? Pure genius. Mendes and Ball are gods. Perfect cast as well.
