Some may want to check at fender guru.com they have several mods that make a good difference for not much money, and sometimes it takes no money. Ive tried some mods and they will work for ever with no damage to the amp, This amp sounds very good btw, have you heard of any one using celestion gold in the peveay amp.
@Gonzoidzz: Or maybe your ear just gives a better representation of the tone than whatever recording device I used for this video. In person my Classic 50 sounded great. My new Dr Z sounds even better though.
I like the Fender much better (and I own both, and I've compared mine to a '66 Pro Reverb; a '67 Twin Reverb; A '69 DSR; and a '73 DSR). Not to mention a Marshall JCM TSL 1000 half-stack; a 1980's JCM 800 Combo; and a '90"s JCM 900 combo, all of which I own. My Peavey Classic 50 is at least 5 years old, and probably has an hour's worth of playing time on it.
I've tried everything, and have spent alot of money doing so. My recommendation is Marshall and vintage Fender amps.
Fender will always rule the clean tones IMO but the PV classic does really well here and I'm surprised! The added channel on the PV for rock is one thing the Fender cannot get to on its own stock. unless perhaps it was Dumblified lol but then that would cost 40,000 for some strange reason.
Then again you can always run a Fender Deluxe with a good OD like a rothwell hellbender. Andy from Proguitarshop demonstrates that the Deluxe can handle pedals really well in almost every video he does.
@SingleCoilVoodoo : Remove two of the power tubes (EL84's) - either the inside pair or the outside pair - and plug the speaker cabinet into the 8ohm socket instead of the 16ohm one. This won't work on the Classic 30 without further modification, only the Classic 50.
@SingleCoilVoodoo: Take my advice with a grain of salt, because I'm no amp tech, but the way I understand it is that by halving the power of the amp you're effectivley doubling the load of the speakers, so you need to 'trick' the amp into working harder......wait, now I'm confusing myself. Yes, plug the 16ohm cab into the 8ohm jack when running the amp at half power - at least, this is what I was told to do by people on guitar forums. And if someone says it on a guitar forum, it MUST be true. ;)
@mistersooty Hmm... I posted on some circuit forums and they said from an electrical standpoint it shouldn't make much of a difference... but if you say it makes that much of a difference, I'll be sure to try it.
@blueduck577: How can it not make a difference? They're power tubes. Taking half of them out halves the power. Less watts equals less headroom, equals earlier breakup. Works in theory, and also works in reality.
@mistersooty does removing 2 tubes make that big of a difference as far as distortion goes? I usually dont get any crunch on the clean channel until turning up to 4 or 5. can't say the neighbors like it when I do that, but I'm trying to avoid getting an attenuator haha
For a more even playing field you should have demo'd the classic 50 next to the twin and the classic 30 next to the deluxe. But I like all of em anyway!
You can, but it's not as simple as pulling the tubes out (as it is on the 50), because they're run in series or something on that amp. The way to do it involves making 'dummy tubes' somehow. I haven't done it myself.
i have a deluxe, a twin and a classic 50. and a bassman. the classic 50 really compares to the bassman the best, but the sound is just not as full. really sparkly though. the twin is just a whole different class. it has more clarity and much rounder bigger sound, yet more sustain.
Don't rule out the PV yet. I kept the PV for 10 years, the Fender for about 10 months. I sold the Fender before I sold the Peavey. Both good amps, the Fender is nicer for clean stuff, but the PV is more reliable and more versatile. I ended up selling them and buying a Dr Z Maz 18, which beats them both hands down.
The Deluxe sounded better to me. I think if you were able to run the Deluxe through a 4X12 cab it would be even more apparent. The PV sounded kind of muddy and dull.
Oh, yes - the Classic 50 is warmer and and exudes much more bottom end in big rooms and higher volumes than my vintage Twin. Certainly, the Classic 50 has a much wider range of tonal possibilities than that of the Twin. The Twin excels at clean chordwork, but its lower frequencies will hardly brrrrr up to even the slightest fuzziness. At lower volumes, the Twin really pales in comparison to the 50. Neither of my amps are hot-rodded and I play a vintage Strat and Guild archtop. Hope this helps!
I own both a Peavey Classic 50 (10 years old) and an ORIGINAL (mid-60s) Blackface Fender Twin. I've owned a lot of different amps in my 35 years of playing. The Twin is a horse, sounds much brighter, and has a lot of nice color in its tone. But for jamming in the back rooms or recording, I prefer the Peavey Classic 50, as it has a much richer bottom end and it sounds much better at lower volumes. I'm not crazy about the ergonomics or the layout of the 50's controls, but it is one fantastic amp!
They're both great around the house. The DRRI probably had the edge in that department, although the PV sounds great at low volumes too. The PV won this battle in the end, the DRRI is sold. The PV was just more versatile and better for most stuff I do. DRRI is a great amp too though.
I went to buy a drri and it happened to be sitting by a 410 classic 50 the 50 had a sweeter sound all around not to mention versatility which the deluxe seams to be one trick pony i need no pedals for the most part with the peavey plus it has power to play most venues if you are not in a stadium without a pa- getting the natural sound of the amp. 22 watts can be a little weak.
I'm blessed to have both at the moment. Would be cool to have a Bassman maybe instead of the Classic 50, cos I think a DRRI/Bassman combination would be awesome. But the Classic 50 has been probably the most important gear purchase I ever made. It's been awesome for 10 years.
just a question, since the peavys 50 watts and the dr is 22, at similar volume level about how much would each amp be turned up? by the way nice playing
so about how loud can you turn up the deluxe reverb in your house without it being overpoweringly loud? and one more question, by taking out some power/preamp tubes would that affect the tone in any way and if so how? thanks again man
Taking out the tubes didn't seem to affect the tone, except for the fact that I got some nice tube breakup when I cranked it. Regarding the DRRI volume question - err - 3 or 4?
Nah, they're usually in a push-pull configuration, so they work in pairs. For this amp, you can take out either the outside two, or the inside two. This trick won't work with all amps. I believe it doesn't work with the Classic 30 for example, because that runs the 4 EL84's a different way. If your amp has two power tubes, it won't work with only one.
classic 50 gives more of an srv tone.... so thats why its deluxe reverb all the way for me! deluxe reverb sounded a bit more tight and rounded in a way to me
I came to the conclusion that the DRRI was better, don't know why, I think I listened to other peoples opinions instead of my own. Kind of wondering if I made the right choice. DRRI is a bit thin.
dunno mate, it sounds like the classic 50 had a great srv tone if thats your thing while the drri had more of a vintage-ish 60's tone soudning less twangy to me. Its all opinion and since its the amp is yours yours is what counts most i guess
Yeah, I have done that. I get a bit of a ground loop hum but it's not unbearable. No ground lift on the 240 volt version of the Classic 50 unfortunately. Sounds pretty cool, but really can't be bothered taking both amps when I play, plus the sound guys probably wouldn't want to find me another mic and another channel.
This is a common problem with cheaper A/B Y boxes, but I use the stereo outs on a Digitech Digi Delay and no buzz/hum at all. You can even use it turned off... (although I apply a smidgen of reverb).
No switching, but massive/and or intricate tonal soundscapes!
One comment seems to be a biased opinion. The Peavey is not muddy at all. Just a different tone. I like running my Classic 30 and Blues Jr together. The Deluxe isn't so clean compared to my Fender 65 Twin Reissue. But tell you what plug those other two tubes into that Classic and show them what clean is all about.
Some may want to check at fender guru.com they have several mods that make a good difference for not much money, and sometimes it takes no money. Running on two power tubes? Which tubes did you remove? I own both a Classic 50 212 and a Classic 30 combo...great amps.
I had heard it might be possible to remove power tubes but never found anyone who did. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

@mistersooty Is the peavey always on the clean channel
taygoo13 1 year ago
On this demo it is. I took two of the power tubes out to cut down the headroom and get that clean channel breakup.
mistersooty 1 year ago
@mistersooty So you can get more power tube distortion with less power tubes?
taygoo13 1 year ago
Not more, but at lower levels. So effectively more, but not technically more.

@mistersooty can you do it with the classic 30

you have to use the yellowjackets from groovetubes. which tubes did you pull on the 50?

Outside two from memory. It has to be the inside two or the outside two.

whats a reasonable volume you could turn up the deluxe reverb in the house without it being too loud?
ledzepplinisthebest 2 years ago
Depends who lives in your house and whether they like your playing.
mistersooty 2 years ago
Pretty funny, tomorrow i was going to decide which amp of EXACTLY these 2 im going to buy. how the fuck did you know?!
Hell i might just go for the Fender afterall.
Though the Peavey was 2nd handed and cheaper... damn:(
