Thomas Jefferson did not write the declaration of independence! He served as an editor! Thomas Payne wrote "Common Sense" in Jan 1776 and the idea got to Benjamin Franklin and John Adams (they wrote the declaration).

Let's all keep in mind that this was 200 years ago. When something is different from us, we find it wierd, sometimes alien. Since the men back in this time didn't know what we know now, they had slaves, unfair rights, etc. History is often Trial and error. I mean, look at britain. John Locke wrote a century before that all men were born equal and had a right to "life, liberty, and the protection of property." So.. to be fair- Jefferson DID take the idea. But that doesn't make it any less resounding, nor does it diminish Jefferson's writing or accomplishment, or the Declaration itself. John Locke had the idea, Thomas Jefferson put it in the form of something that could be used as a rallying cry- and Washington, the Congress, and the American people made it happen.

@RebelGuy95 Actually, republic means "the rule of law" as opposed to democracy which means "the rule of the people". There is a fundamental difference in these two ideas. In a republic, the law rules, and while the majority rules, it is limited by unalienable rights. In a democracy, the people are allowed into all aspects and can vote away a man's life, property, and freedom away from him.

Let's all keep in mind that this was 200 years ago. When something is different from us, we find it wierd, sometimes alien. Since the men back in this time didn't know what we know now, they had slaves, unfair rights, etc. History is often Trial and error. I mean, look at britain. They had many Acts set upon the Colonists, and each time they thought that they would finally get control over them. Obviously they were wrong. Besides, it's good to know this info because history often repeats itself.

The fact that the general public could not accept this for so many many years is another issue enitrely. And jwomack94 is right. Jefferson did want to mention ending slavery, but again, there was the public to consider (the south, specifically).

John Locke wrote a century before that all men were born equal and had a right to "life, liberty, and the protection of property." So.. to be fair- Jefferson DID take the idea. But that doesn't make it any less resounding, nor does it diminish Jefferson's writing or accomplishment, or the Declaration itself. John Locke had the idea, Thomas Jefferson put it in the form of something that could be used as a rallying cry- and Washington, the Congress, and the American people made it happen.

Makes me proud to be an American till I turn to CNN or the local news channel or FOX. We're America, for God sakes! We won the war against England (one of the best in the world) in the American revolution but we're being taken down by our leaders, immigration issues, terrorists, oil spills, education (students failing), and the economy. In my opinion, we need to stop, think, then act on those issues before another country beats us. cough* China *cough. Seriously, we need to act now.
