wholly shit this isn't Hawaiian or a Fijian Chant! This is an old Maori New Zealand song that has been in New Zealand beyond the 30years that I have lived!
@FrancesGeraldine maybe the Hawaiian's Hokule'a got caught in the current and they drifted to Africa, stopped for a beer at the Alexander's lighthouse, went on to Fiji but since they only had sulu's, turned around and went back to the pub. I know I would have.
@FrancesGeraldine Hawaii has Africa roots it is descent from Africa, just like Jamaica... Hawaii or Jamaica it may not be our mother but it is sure our Missing Apart auntie.
@parisfaith Aloha brother. No disrespect, but from what I've leanred through the teachings of my tutu nana and tutu papa, the Native Hawaiian people originate from the Marquesas people and also the Tahitian people. NATIVE Hawaiians have no connection to the African people whatsoever. However, there are some Hawaiians who have been mixed with the african race due to marriage or whatever the case, but essentially there is no connection to the African people and the Native Hawaiians.
@KMakamae808 Thats my understanding as well I'm half kenyan and I appreciate how beautiful this is but I also know that it isn't fair to give cultural credit where it isn't due. I think it would be a great gesture for the account owner to make clear the origins of this video so we can all appreciate the beauty and culture of the composers.

@tonganhorse831 Learn about the origins of the Maori. The Maori are also in Africa. There are indigenous tribes throughout polynesia and one who is not knowing and who has not studied would think they were in Mama Africa. There is more....
@tonganhorse831 Have you heard of anthropology. You don't have to be from New Zealand or grown up there to study the people and the culture or learn from those who you know personally that have are from there and their families for generations. Folks that know little, often get offended. The comment is merely a point for all including myself for further study and investigation on the links that are.

@hawaiiandestiny808 The comment did not say about where all these sections of people come from. I merely said that there is a tribe of Maori..not merely by name..but by blood that do not live in these places, but are in Africa....so there is no argument.
I use to listen to this song, and sing along. I don't know the meaning. I know this is maori though. Lol, there's one part of the song that says they're going to africa to be fair to the guy who made this. 2:15
This is a Maori..[NZ native] song that we used to sing at school. This song was recorded by "Herbs" the same group that backed Dave Dobbin in "Slice of Heaven"
Absolutely nuth'n to do with Africa. Sorry....But just enjoy folks. The 28th Maori Battalion used to also sing this song too during WW2, as a love song when they were pining for their New Zealand homeland, wives.....and families. The song itself derives from sticks game our people played as children years ago in Pre European time.
@176709 I understand my dear. No offense but it does have South African flare...anyone who hear it , Maori will not come to mind.....Without looking at the heading....I thought the song was an South African freedom song.

I actually know fiji and told him bout this vid. You know what? his words. "bra when was da last time you got chase from one lion or cheetah?" Its not about anything more than a beautiful song sung by a awesome artist!
omg, this uploader is an idiot.. and to the dumb ass that thinks polynesians are similar to africans then you're fucking high. the similarities you pointed out is called common sense that everybody would do stranded on a damn island with unknown resources.. this music video is somewhat insulting.. not his fault he didnt know though.
@TasmiaVictoria To correct you Hawaiians, Tongans and Samoans are from Asian descent. They're Polynesian. This includes Maoris and Rarotongans. Melenesian people are more from African descent. They include Fiji and the Solomon Islands.
@TasmiaVictoria 2 Samoan,Hawaiians and Tongans have an Asian ancestry. They're Polynesian. You go to the Melenesians, that's where you have African descent. That would be the Solomon Islands and Fiji.
There's nothing Hawaiian about these songs.(Yes three seperate songs) It's maori 0:00- 2:05, English (Fijian Background) 2:06-2:20, Some African Language 2:21-end (Not being offensive but I honestly don't know which one. There are a few) If you were a pacific islander you'd be able to pick up the differences. I should know I'm Miconesian, Melenesian and Polynesian.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened too. I shouldnt matter where your from. Just have respect for all races and accept the fact that we all descended from africa and became the various different races. However I see us all as one. So Love people, please?
why are you even argueing about what race origionates from where, just listen to the music like most of you clicked on the link for in the 1st place? :)
and by the way who really cares if it has anything to do with them or not. if that's the case then everyone better stop listening to the radio because you don't have all of those people's heritage. it doesn't matter music shouldn't be as racist as u guys are making it. no one should have to explain this--a beautiful song is a beautiful song.
all human life came from africa if you wanna go that far back.
another thing people don't realize is that african slaves were EVERYWHERE not just on the mainland. spaniards in the caribbean recieved slaves taught them their language and had children with them. Englishmen in mainland america did the same. when englishmen invaded the islands, they brought their slaves with them. the same thing they did with their african slaves they did with islanders, and their slaves did as well.
well New Zealanders, the REAL new zealanders meaning the Natives abOriginals a.k.a so-called blacks, they are originaly from Africa,, all people are originaly from Africa, since Africans fathered all so-called races, but abOriginals of australia and new zealand didnt mix with pale skinned races, so hence they are the kinfolks of africans..
Black fijians?? never heard of it...Please dont try to mix our polynesian cultures up with africans...We admire the jamaican music and thats as far as it goes..never have you seen our people do anything relative to what your peoples do..we are nothing like africans, we have a strong polynesian background to prove it....language, appearance, tradition and customs are totally different..
@MILIDAMJR - your might need to do some history before 1500bc - you will eventually findout truth. we came intoo the south pacific, we did not originate there. So the question is where did we originate from. Malaysian is one of the stopping points, but we didn't originate there.
hiphop & r&b are of american culture but to deny african influence is ignorance.. culture isn't always geographical limited. Similar to how language is wide spread so is music..
Actual Africa does have A LOT to do with Hawaii and the pacific islands. Africans traveled to the Americas many years before slavery. African traits, dark skin and many of the same spiritual, singing, dancing, customs are here. Regardless of the nuances, there is a huge similarity in clothing, drums, chants, and more. It's no different than the differences between portugese, spanish and italian.
@jadamink It never ceases to amaze me how someone can make such a misinformed, self-righteous statement and have 10 other numbskulls go along with him or her.
@jadamink It's also believed that one of the oldest civilizations in the Americas, the Olmec, are of African decent due to the shape of their famous giant stone heads.
@jadamink except the portugese, spanish, and the italians live in the same continent next to each other. The polynesians are no where near africa much less even on the same body of ocean.
@oahugrownfaka actually it seems like you dont know what youre talking about. come on now the Hawaiians were sailors and navigators. who said they had to stay in the Pacific? how do you know there isnt other places that may have been discovered by Hawaiians or other groups of Polynesians. the video is wrong because its not a Hawaiian song.
I really like this song, and there is an African Historical prescence in the Melanese culture in Fiji; as well as a flourishing Black population. Check Out : Edofolks-African Presence in Fiji.
the name of the song is E PAPA recorded by New Zealand group HERBS,It is a MAORI song ,this is a beautiful mix,of MAORI,AFRICAN.AWESOMELY PUT TOGETHER
is a rely imeasing wonderfulll just so i ken understand first part is maori and last african!!! i heard and heard, wonderfull! And do not say i,am rocker!
E hine, hoki mai ra. 1. E papā Waiari, Taku nei mahi Taku nei mahi, He tuku roimata Chorus: Ē aue, ka mate au; E hine hoki mai rā Ē aue, ka mate au; E hine hoki mai rā 2. Māku e kaute Ō hīkoitanga Māku e kaute Ō hīkoitanga
@hulahoney808 thanks Hulahoney the lyrics for the Maori part of the song: E hine, hoki mai ra. 1. E papā Waiari, Taku nei mahi Taku nei mahi, He tuku roimata Chorus: Ē aue, ka mate au; E hine hoki mai rā Ē aue, ka mate au; E hine hoki mai rā 2. Māku e kaute Ō hīkoitanga Māku e kaute Ō hīkoitanga
this is a maori childrens song, not an african song... it's the song they sing while they play the titiroea. it has absolutely NOTHING to do with africa... please double check your resourses.
The song is “Chant of the Islands” by Fiji on the Best of Fiji album. As of today, Amazon is temporarily out of the cd; but, that’s where it can be found. Hope this helps.
lmao this isnt african its maori ( original new zealanders) the only time fiji sings in african i at 2:24 just for all you guys that dont know. and yea.... just letting u know 808 laie boyz! I , , I _
@SODMGboy There is no language called african, you illiterate. There is an existing language called Africaan, but that is only spoken in certain places, of which New Zealand is not one of them. There is one time, ONE time, when he speaks in Zulu, but thats about it.
dude fiji a.k.a George "Fiji" Veikoso is a FIJIAN but resides in Hawaii...he is NOT HAWAIIAN!!!!.....and this is not a hawaiian chant but a Maori chant...only the last verse is in African...
@yalbik420 .. I am sorry but I am going to have to disagree with you. Studies have shown that Africans were in the Pacific sometime around 2500 B.C. So to say that there is no correlation would be false. I think people forget that our ancient brothers and sisters were a lot more advanced than we give them credit for. Also, we are all more connected than you may think or want to give credit. Peace to you!!!
Black Fijians are genetically proven to be very closely related to Africans. That goes for alot of the black indegenous people in Asia. Even my Dravidian Indian heritage has strong African connections.
@yalbik420 yes it does, everything has to deal with africa, it being the MOTHER of the world. Africans came to the south pacific, hawaii, japan, and new zealand, du ur history and research then come back at us
@TheYaom Where do Fijian get there Dark skin and thick hair, Huge lips, and other Afro Centric features?? You better check your history. IF YOUR NOT DARK SKIN OR HAVE WHAT I LISTED ABOVE, YOUR ANCESTORS ARE IMMIGRANTS FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY.
@TheYaom I am actually Afro Hispanic. And your dark skin definitely comes from Africans. GET OVER IT!!!!! Your dark skin dont come caucasians or Asian Indians (ifs that what you been told) CHECK YOUR HISTORY SWEETY!!! ANCIENT FIJIANS AS WELL AS SAMOANS, TONGANS, AND HAWAIIANS WAS DARKER THAN MIDNIGHT!!!!!!!!! WHO YOU KNOW OTHER THAN AFRICANS THAT ARE DARKER THAN MIDNIGHT???? WAKE UP1!!
simply beautiful. aloha wau ia oe na hawaii!

The song is “Chant of the Islands” by Fiji on the Best of Fiji album. As of today, Amazon is temporarily out of the cd; but, that’s where it can be found. Hope this helps.

thibblez 10 months ago
@SODMGboy There is no language called african, you illiterate. There is an existing language called Africaan, but that is only spoken in certain places, of which New Zealand is not one of them. There is one time, ONE time, when he speaks in Zulu, but thats about it.

samoapride04 1 year ago
@yalbik420 .. I am sorry but I am going to have to disagree with you. Studies have shown that Africans were in the Pacific sometime around 2500 B.C. So to say that there is no correlation would be false. I think people forget that our ancient brothers and sisters were a lot more advanced than we give them credit for. Also, we are all more connected than you may think or want to give credit. Peace to you!!!

@yalbik420,
Nothing to do with Africa?
Black Fijians are genetically proven to be very closely related to Africans. That goes for alot of the black indegenous people in Asia. Even my Dravidian Indian heritage has strong African connections.
