  • no part 6 an 10?

  • NO ONE could rock a white Afro (AKA Anglo) like Victor Garber!

  • I know they had no control over this but I love how it gets super windy during on the willows. Also Gilmer looks so pretty in this song

  • @RoxyMoron101 Agreed. When she stares into the distance, it's just stunning.

  • In my school's production of Godspell, during this song, literally every actor was crying during this song. I was especially, because my best friend was playing Jesus, and after this year he was graduating, and I would never see him again

  • I wish I could have been there to hug/kiss Jesus... :'(

  • I am currently in a production. So far every time I've rehearsed or performed "By My Side", "On the Willows", or "The Finale" I have had tears fill my eyes!

  • theres no love button!!!!!!!!!

  • @lordzero545

Well, I think Judas expected something different with Jesus. He thought he was gonna storm in and start a revolution and save all the Jews. Though with his death he did save them, just in a different way. But when Judas realized that wasn't what Jesus was gonna do, I think he felt betrayed. Like his best friend was not who he thought he was. Though, I don't think he ever intended for him to be killed.

  • this song is the most beautiful song out of the whole show

  • Heartbreaking, isn,t it, almost unbearable to watch

  • My school just did a production of this. The final show was today and I went to see it. During this scene and the scene that follows, the actors started actually crying and so did the audience. It was the most powerful thing I've ever seen in a stage show.

  • Um... why Judas/John betray Jesus? I mean I know it sounds stupid but hear me out. In the part before it, Judas repeats the verse in the Bible about how Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Here, there's no incentive and Judas didn't hate Jesus here either. So... why all of a sudden change of heart and wanting to betray Jesus? Kinda weird if you ask me. But so is just running to a fountain and splashing around with strangers. So I don't know... There should be a re-make. :D

  • @lordzero545 Also it can be because Judas was greedy. He stole money from offerings and so he got a lot of money this way.

  • @staticfan1 Which offerings? Where? I didn't see any stealing. :O

  • I'm doing godspell in drama this year and I'm like bawling during this idk if its the scene itself for the song...maybe both?

  • Be gone Satan! Hello Shamu!

  • What ever happened to the cast from the movie?

  • @dreamwarrior2008 well Victor Garber played Daddy Warbucks in Anne later on. I'm not sure about anyone else though, though i love them all

  • So powerful..........

  • this movie is extremely well put together in the days it was created. Now is the time for a new generation to tell the same story

  • @NO1FlyingAce i actually think this movie could be remade, like they remade hairspray , i really think it should be

  • This must be from the same gospel that inspired By The Rivers Of Babylon by Boney M. Cool

  • It is so awesome how Merrell looks so sad and yet he winks and puts on a smile for Jesus. It shows Merrell's irrepressible spirit of joy even in the darkest moments.

  • sing us one of the songs of Zion

  • I would love to see Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar all in one play. Gethsemene is such a beatiful song, same with heaven on their minds. all of these songs put together would get the true message across that Jesus did what he did for our benefit, so we could have eternal life in the Kingdom. Our sins being forgiven , and us living on the word of God and yeilding a harvest 200fold. God saved his people, but can we save ourselfs from the lies Satan tells us the world needs no God !!!!

  • I'm not christian, i'm not at all religious, but... This film...It's incredible... I saw it at the theatre once and it was breathtaking... I LOVE this film, it is truly amazing...

  • the way the robin looks when Jesus hugs lynne is a tearjerker. she looks so amazed yet makes me feel sad

  • But that's the thing.. another 'man' didn't die for our sins.

    He wasn't just some man.

  • This makes me cry. Everyone knew what was going to happen-- there's still a glimmer of melancholy sweetness. The cat puppet.... T_T Jesus/Victor Garber just seems like a person you'd want a hug from.

  • I remember that feeling ...I have loved this movie (and it"s message, not neccasarily religious, but spiritual) for over 30 years...your words "melancholy sweetness" are a perfect description of that feeling. And yes, Victor Garber did a perfect portrail of Jesus in this movie, that's why everyone who's seen it wants a hug from him.

  • @PeaceOut2U07 Yep - I played the lead guitar part at 2:30 and following with tears in my eyes many, many times...

  • I thought By My Side was the worst I would get choked up....

We're doing a production of this, and decided to look up the movie.

I'm legit crying because it's so good.... and I connect here, for some reason or another.... I feel this, and it affects me in a beautiful way....

  • This song never fails to make me cry. I love it.

  • Based on Psalm 137 and the willows of the Euphrates of Babylon.

Psalm 137:3 3 for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"

  • u noticed that on the film Jesus had like 9 diciples but the bible said Jesus had 12 diciples lol :s

  • @Disneycrazyx

He had 12 APOSTLES. lol. He had hundreds of disciples.

  • Is that a Daniel Striped Tiger puppet?

  • here it is

  • Be kind. It's simple.

  • What's wrong with Jesus' hair? LOL

  • dont insult JESUS you fool

  • dont insult VICTOR GARBER* you fool

  • *sounds like Simon and Garfunkel

  • I'm gonna sound really stupid, ok? So, when Jesus said, "Eat, because this is my body," was it really pieces of him, or was that a metaphor?

  • I'm not a very good Christian, but I think I can answer this one. It was a metaphor, which really meant that he asked everyone present to accept him into their hearts, bodies, and souls.

I'm pretty sure that no one ate any of Jesus' body parts :).

  • Yeah, if that were ture wouldn`t that just make them canabols witch is illegal in most places

  • it's symbolic, as in there is a piece of God and Jesus in each of us.

  • back at that time canabalism was quite common

  • it depends on what your faith is. Christians believe that is just symbolic of Jesus' body, but Catholics (like me) believe that through transubstantition, (demonstrated in this movie when Jesus speaks hebrew) The bread ans wine turn to his body and blood. :) Don't worry you don't sound stupid, hope that helps.

  • @djsrob That depends on who you ask. As with most religion questions.

  • sorry to jump in a late argument but i agree with Jany1954...Jesus never proclaimed a religion...even the word christian was used in a derogatory way to identify people who believed in Christ as the son. Christ said do not argue over dispute able matters all he requires is that we have faith in him...now churches are separated by even baptism how dumb.....so i proclaim non denomination...but you 19lfm12 i dont know you but you seem really snotty (like a pharisee)

  • are there really people arguing philosophy in youtube comments ?

  • The part with the puppet never fails to break me down. :*(

  • @TarotMage Me too. Gilmer looking like she's about to cry doesn't help. :'(

  • When I acted in this play, I felt empathy only it was much more than empathy; it was understanding of who we are as Catholic's and what we have to do as children of God. <3

  • Thank you for posting the video. This song always makes me cry whenever I hear it. We had 7 shows, and every time we acted it, the whole theater broke out into tears...

  • Every time I hear this song, I cry. It really makes you feel how truly sad and scared he was. :'(

  • I did this show in high school, and to this day some 18 years later it remains one of the most moving pieces of theater I have ever been a part of.

  • it's a tradition to have part of the crew to sing this...

  • My group sang the whole song because Jesus was busy saying goodbye to each of us :)

Actually, according to the original script, the band is supposed to sing this song :)

  • this part is tragically sad...even to a atheist Jew like me.

  • Tomorrow I'll be singing this in choir for a Lenten service.

Moves me to tears every time :' )

  • We did this today in drama and the tears just flowed..it's so emotional.

  • im not religious at all but damn on the willows gets me the scene is touching in general. although i dont believe in god or jesus his teachings are defiantly teachings that all should follow the words i feel are more important than the man.

  • In a way, it can be said that some of what you are saying is part of what Christ intended: that his teachings were the most important thing.

The problem has been that organized religion posited itself as a toolbooth to God...to Christ...to heaven.....when no toll was ever needed.

Hold on to those teachings & follow them as best you can. That is all you or anyone need do. Everything else will...work itself out.

  • 19, the Lord Jesus Christ was God in the flesh, ie, His teachings are MOST important - HELLO! He was NOT "organized" religion as you seem to utter on every thread of the movie - Why don't you open up His Word and read it - you might then understand??

  • Better idea:

Why don't you go to Wal-Mart & buy some reading comprehension? It's is aisle 5..........

The kindest thing I can say of your 'rebuttal' to me is that you have no idea wtf you are talking about...O.o

  • 19, I DO have an idea what I am saying to you, but you refuse to understand it - sad

  • No, you are clueless of what I speak.

Christ was very much opposed to what organized religion became in His day & what it has said & done 'in His name' since then.

One needs to separate what He really said from all the garbage which obscures it, thanks to the Vatican,, et. al.

Godspell succeeds as it preaches without being 'preachy' or forcing religion on anyone. It communicates Christ's message with tenderness & simplicity.

  • 19, and I don;'t disagree with that statement. I never ever said He was in agreement with organized religion, because believing in Him is NOT religion; it's a FAITH in whom He says He is!

  • Jesus had no problem with organized religion. He went to the temple and preached there many times. He was against the corruption of the religious officials. He actually says that we should go to church.

    Hebrews 10:25

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

    and...

    Romans 12:5

... so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

  • Jesus was really mad when he saw his disciples falling asleep. He was feeling so lonely, and even scared because the time was near. He couldn't help it because it was the will of the Father... That was a positive proof of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, truly God and truly Human

  • this song makes me cry........ I love godspell and all these songs. They are very moving!

  • It has been said that Jesus Christ Superstar was written in order to MOCK God. I am not sure I agree, But I will not dismiss the possibility either. MAny have tried to Mock My Lord and savior Jesus Christ, However, it ended in themselves making the mockery of themselves before God.

Thank you Jesus For ALL YOU HAVE DONE for me. It is a debt I can never repay on my own.

  • this is godspell

  • i cry every single time i see this movie, the first time being when i was 10.

  • On the williows is one of the saddest yet the greatest numbers ever written for the lord and this musical is one of my favorites. I really wish the world was like that, everyday chosen ones are to relive the first days with god and all day in a city were theres no one but them. I wish I could be one of those chosen ones. one of these day I will be.

  • This part makes me cry everytime I watch it. Its so sad :(

Its really sweet how Jeffrey doesn't seem to understand whats happening. He is so innocent and sweet ^^

  • ...why did this comment get a thumbs down?

0.o; I didnt say anything bad. I love this movie and its characters.

  • thats why i love him! he just seems so innocent and carefree!

  • Yeah! ^_^ he's so adorable <3

  • Why doesn't it add my replies under the comment I'm replying to like it used to? *confused*

My previous comment was in response to jazzeledbyjasper.

  • lol i got the comement! haha! :) lol!

  • I think it just does that when you first post, regardless of whether it's an original post or a reply to a previous post. Eventually it shows up as a reply to the post in question.

  • Yes - it is almost as if Jeffrey is John - the Beloved Disciple - who is supposed to have been a very young man.

  • @RoyMrMann Yep - have played this so many times with tears in my eyes...

  • @RoyMrMann im jefferys understudy but for now im in the chorus cuz our cast is so small i cry so bad becuz the guy who plays jesus is leaving us he is going to graduate this year and im going to cry opening night and night 3!

  • @RoyMrMann although I played "Herb" in my high school production (MANY moons ago)... I fashioned my look after Jeffrey Mylett. He was so inspiring to me!

  • this is sad

  • The reson why Jesus had to be crucified is because if God just forgave us automatically, he would be evil. God is the perfect judge, and he can't wink at sin. He is the perfect standard. But if somebody who commited no sin payed out debt, then we wouldn't have to go to Hell.

  • Camelot? Obviously where you reside. Though what you spout is as ancient as... well, Christianity... it never ceases to amaze.

  • It does, doesn't it?To think that so many people would pay attention to a man who so willingly sacraficed himself...sounds like the ancient king of Camelot, no?

  • King Arthur was made to be like Jesus. There is even a reference to the gospel in the story of Arthur.

  • Nothing 'amazing' about letting another man take responsibility for your own 'sin'. It's commonplace as you well know. What does amaze me is being okay with that.

  • sobbing....

  • on the willows makes me cry hardcore

my theatre director sang this song during our Godspell musical and is moving soon ):

  • OH GOODNESS.

    I'm crying like a baby.

  • Howl, what ever way the Holy Spirit brngs you to Faith in Him is a good thing :)

  • i agree. the thing that brought me to faith was actually a book! im really praying for one of my friends to come to faith and i'm thinking of showing her this movie. i think it might help.

  • man im so confused about faith right now this movie has helped me.

  • Hoping your confusion turned into the crystal clear clarity of the godless world you inhabit. Once god's gone, it may even be beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh no I am crying again.

  • From this part until the end, I'm usually sobbing!

  • Oh, yes, me too.

  • Nice portrayal of the Last Supper and Crucifixtion.

  • God made it the equation of Jesus's death+accepting god=salvation

BUT, if hes all powerful and is all why couldnt he have done a different method? one that doesnt incorporate human torture? it could have been

drink a magic purple gatorade that rains from the sky+accepting god= salvation

ive always been puzzeled by this. :/

(wanted to watch this because my sis was in this play)

  • think of it like this:

Every sin that you have committed you should have died for. There are billions of people on this planet, and every one of us have sinned. We all should have gone through what Jesus went through; being tortured, mocked, and ostracized from society. But because God loves us, he sent his sinless son to die for our sins.

He is all powerful, but because we were all born with original sin Jesus's blood had to be spilled to wash our sins away.

    My sin.

    Your sin.

    Everyone's

  • Amen, brother.

  • Nicely stated. The crucifixion is a symbol of our inclination to project our own sin onto others, while we in fact, are all perfect in God's eyes.

  • Osyen asks an important question. No person with a conscience should ever be comfortable with the idea of anyone having to suffer as a result of their sin. That's what makes the "equation" Osyen describes so humbling. Proud people could always try to insist that they'll take whatever punishment is doled out to them for their sins. But who'd say that if you knew that someone ELSE would get the punishment instead of you? And not just ANY someone but a truly selfless man who deserved none of it?

  • the way he's crucified is intersting, i never saw it that way before.

  • this part always makes me cry 2!! i've watched this movie sibce i was like 6!

  • The message is ageless but the willingness to hear it is, unfortunately, not.

  • This scene is to symbolize the washing of the apostles feet at the Last Supper. In this case, the washing of the face paint with the cold cream bottle.

  • i might be sounding dumb, but i just realized something, i think i figured out why its called Godspell: they got it from gospel.

put a "d" in-between the "os" and add an "l": Godspell

  • "godspell" is the Old English spelling of the word "gospel" which means the good news... And basically the story comes completely from the Gospels in the Bible

  • ya, I knew it was from the Bible, and I didn't know that godspell was Old English, cool

  • it comes from the book of mathew

  • In mine everyone cries when we act this cuase its sad

  • oooooooo i get to say "all these things i give you, if you pay homage to me son of god" in my HS play comin im stoked

  • "Godspell" is one of the All-Time greatest musicals that has ever been made and will continue to be that! Well acted, well written,

and just flat out GREAT! That's all that I can say.

  • I could not agree more. Playing Lamar in HS 20 yrs ago, I had SO much fun doing this show more than any other play we did.

  • I totally agree! The songs and music are great and very moving. I can't listen to them enough.

  • when my school did this play this year, our last night was horrible. we were all trying to sing this song without our voices breaking. it was even worse when we were trying to be happy and cheerful singing the reprise of "Prepare Ye". =[[

  • The segment that shows Godspell has drama and pathos, too. Moves me every time I see it.

  • Same here, I can't watch it without crying.

  • I love this movie...but, here, in my country, is impossible to find it!

Thanks to post it! I love so much this movie...

  • Not to sure about Godspell, saw the play it appears that it deny's the resurrection. In that at the end of the play Jesus just dies.

And the part in the movie where Jesus slaps the guy, Jesus wouldnt slap anyone.

  • he comes back at the end, dude. did u watch it?

  • Saw a live version, didn't recall him coming back.

  • not meant to be literal -remember it was

1973 all the drugs-& vietnam protest

and the social issues of the 60s were still

permeating - this was ingenious to reach

people of the time as now again and until

    HE comes

  • Yes, but if you are going to use a play as an vehicle to preach Jesus, then use the whole Gospel.

  • but it's not preaching that he was the Messiah. It's preaching his message in general.

  • The medium is the message.

  • While it doesn't exactly show Jesus being resurrected in Godspell (this was one of the criticisms of Jesus Christ Superstar) the last song in Godspell while they are carrying Jesus off after his cruxifiction they are singing "long live God" and "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord."

  • Its a pity that they didn't have Him risen. Without the Resurrection the Gospel is meaningless.

It was good at the end of the Passion movie that Mel Gibson had Jesus Risen.

  • It's b/c Godspell isn't about Jesus's life... It's about the things Jesus teaches and how each person learns these things and becomes a community. The ending songs where they carry Jesus off stage represents the community taking the "word" (his body) and spreading it among the crowd. ...if that makes any sense lol

  • Oh it was all symbolic then?

  • Yes. It does make sense. Well said.
