  • I love birds. I have always wanted to get one, but have always worried that I would not be able to take care of it properly. So to all of you who have birds and take good care of them...I say "Bravo". And for those who speak up for mistreated birds, I say thank you.

  • Perhaps the best video of this type that I've ever seen.

The problem what people often refuse to see is that parrots don't need to be really abused or neglected to suffer - even with the best of care, they may still suffer just from being in captivity. And that's why we shouldn't breed or buy parrots.

  • i am looking to get a pet bird, i go to school for 6 hours everyday, so what bird do you recomend i am looking for a bird that will like to be held and be friendly, please reply :] SNOWBALL FOREVER!

  • @TheQazman2116 This is a difficult question since I'm not sure if you are a college student living in a dorm or at home. Conures are friendly and love to be held, but they are very loud for their size so I wouldn't recommend a conure if you won't be living at home. Honestly, if you live in a dorm most birds will be too loud. If you send me a message with your email address I can offer more advice.

    Irena Schulz

  • @BirdLoversOnly Ok i am 13 and i live at home, noise isnt really a problem but it needs to be reasonably priced and prefferably friendly and likes to be held.

  • @TheQazman2116 Honestly, as a parrot owner of a 14 year old girl that I have had since birth, I really have to discourage you from getting one. It is not like a dog or cat. It is like having a permanent 4 or 5 year old for the rest of your life. They are so social and should not be left alone for hours or long portions through the day. i work at home and take my girl with me on trips to parents. It is a lifetime commitment. Please only consider it if you can be a parent to one forever.

  • @TheQazman2116 You have to put the bird first in everything. If you cannot be with one 70% of the day, you really should consider a different pet like a cat or dog. They need a lot of interaction and affection and things to occupy them while you are out at the store or running errands.

  • yes they do deserve better. BUT what if the cage is clean they get food and water and they have a loving family who would go out of their way to make sure there safe?

  • @ceejaybuchanan I have no issue with birds being treated properly. But we also have to think of the larger picture. Poaching of parrots still continues despite the fact that we have laws against this. As good as our laws are, these birds are still smuggled into this country via inhumane means. I will send the links to you in a message since You Tube does not allow links within the comments section.

Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only

  • @ceejaybuchanan I just tried to send you links to some reports on the illegal parrot trade in the United States, but it states that your channel is no longer available.

  • America does indeed have a very beautiful bird.

  • I don't like the way petsmart treats their birds, especially their green-cheeked conure, the poor bird is so lonely, all by himself, his cage is on the very bottom so he is forced to live in 12 inches of space, put the finches there! The don't mind being low, acturally they dont fly much, they live on the ground in the wild! part of you wants to rescue them right away, but the other wants to leave him in hopes they will quit carrying them... But If I had the money I would definitly rescue him

  • @FishyIceCream Did you politely discuss this with the manager? Most of the chain pet shops do not have bird-knowledgeable employees. We have a pet shop close to us and I had explained that their conures need to be in bird cages. We had even donated a cage for the one conure so it could rest comfortably on perches. It doesn't always work, but if you explain in a polite and pleasant way without sounding demeaning or condescending, they'll listen.

Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only

  • @BirdLoversOnly doing so without offending them is a tall order, they don't care about animals - they don't even take the dead fish out of the tanks or bother to wonder whats killing them! I'm kinda worried they'll take it too personally and ban us where I will have to buy the low quality cockatiel food they sell at grocery stores.

  • @FishyIceCream What city/state is this store located? How can you be banned for giving helpful advice? If you go in there with an "in your face" approach, then you may be viewed as unwelcome or even hostile. But if you are pleasant and offer some helpful advice then I don't see how you would be banned. I am limited by the amount of space I have to write on You Tube so I will privately message you on how you can approach this.

Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only

  • I have a previously abused cockatiel on my computer right now, the person we got him from had him locked in a tiny cage all day, his perches didn't fit and fell all the time, he had 1 toy he couldn't even reach, he had a mineral block he couldn't reach either, He had no oyster shells or grit to help him digest stuff, He had no vitamins in his water, and even had low quality food he was being paced on so he wouldn't go through it fast, but when we got him we went on a shopping spree at petco

  • @FishyIceCream I'm so happy to hear that you are making sure he eats right and has the right kinds of perches. A variety of perches is best (cable rope perches are easiest on the feet, but manzanita perches offer durability and uniqueness) to prevent bumblefoot from forming. Cockatiels really don't require grit. Zupreem offers good quality pellets for cockatiels. You don't want to give any bird a high sunflower seed diet because it's bad for their liver.

    Irena - Bird Lovers Only

  • @BirdLoversOnly Oh yeah I've heard of those comfy rope perches, I've been thinking about getting one, but he already has a variety in his cage, He has cement, natural wood, and sand, and by the way, Do you know of any organic pellets?? I eat organic and I think he should too considering pesticides are toxic for them, I currently feed him an organic seed mix and when we eat quinoa (Pronounced Keen-wa) we give him some because they have lots of amino acids that seeds lack and he enjoys it.

  • @FishyIceCream Since you have cement and sand perches, keep a close eye on his feet. Those types of perches can be very hard on their feet and cause bumblefoot. There are many types of organic pellets on the market. Just do a search for Organic Pellets For Parrots and you should come up with several links. If you are feeding seed to your cockatiel, please try soaking some in water to allow germination of the seed which is much healthier because of the enzymes in germinated seed.

  • Wow...Very sad. But a beautiful song. I find myself singing it all the time.

  • Irena, I've listened to this more times than I can count, and I don't believe I can improve on such dynamic perfection. However, the "Drive," you are seeking can be done, and I'm workingg on it. It's going to take awhile, but I'll be in touch to let you know of the progress, either here, or FB.

    Alexparrot1 aka Chris

  • @alexparrot1 Hi Chris! The intro is a bit different on the CD...it has a flute solo and the intro isn't as long. The videographer looped the guitar part so that Sy wouldn't be competing with the vocals of the song since the lyrics tell the story of the pics. Thanks for being so kind and supportive of the birds and for your very sweet words! :D

  • i hate cages i have a bird room

  • Hello. Thank you for this video. I didn't know how badly some birds were treated... We all need to treat birds (and animals) with respect!

    Nick

  • @NicholasPiano Thank you, Nick. Yes we do need to treat all birds and animals with respect. They feel and suffer just like we do.

Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only

  • Hi Irena..I just posted this on Facebook!

  • @maybejones THANK YOU! We hope to spread awareness of just how widespread animal cruelty really is...it is not as uncommon as I used to think...especially w/regard to birds.

Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue

  • @maybejones I also posted this as my status on Facebook. :)

  • This is an amazing video - thanks to everyone involved. Very moving.

  • accidently put *abusing like bars*

    instead of *abusing dislike bar*

    whoops

    a day before this comment

i really like birds cause the are so cool

  • That case disgusted and depressed me when it made local news in the Dallas area. I didn't realize they had rescued green cheeks from it. I adore my gcc, he might have had a new friend or 2 had they posted pics at the time or at least mentioned parrots :(

  • @dancingsprite You may want to contact the HSPCA in Houston to find out how you can help. I know they are looking for good quality homes for these birds.

Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only Rescue

  • Thank you Irena for helping us to never forget where these beautfiul birds deserve to be.

    Love what you are doig

    Patty from LA

  • @pattyinla Thank you, Patty!

  • PS. Can you please tell me what the name is of the bird on 0.47 sec. and from which country it comes. Thanks in advance. ♥♥Jeannette♥♥

  • @jikkehond It appears to be a green cheek conure which lives in South America.

  • @BirdLoversOnly Hello my dear friend, thank you for the information. I saved this parrot and i name it .....Hulky ;-)))))) the green man. I also have an African Grey of 19 years. Its owner died 9 years ago and the children did not want it because they were afraid of him biting but after 2 weeks in my house he became the sweetest and social bird for man or woman. His name is Dodo. Have a great week and thanks again. ♥♥Jeannette♥♥

  • @jikkehond Dear Jeannette,

Thank you so much for sharing this. Sometimes all it takes is someone who understands birds to bring out the best in them. People expect them to act like dogs or cats, but they have personalities and quirks that make them unique. Thank you for opening up your home to Dodo!

    Irena

  • @BirdLoversOnly Hello Irena, i searched on Google and found many information about the dark capped Conure and indeed , this is my Hulk hahaha. I adopted him a few month ago from the animal-ambulance and today there was a parrot and perroquet day in an animalshop in my city and much information i get there also i bought some toys and extra food so both my birds are happy now ;-))))) and me too. Lots of succes in your work and have a happy week. ♥♥Jeannette♥♥

  • A good educationel video and i am crying by seeing the suffering of these nice and very intelligent birds in dirty cages. My 2 parrots whitch i saved have a better life in a big and clean cage and every day good food and clean water. ♥♥Jeannette♥♥

  • Thank you sooooooo much for all what you are doing to help the birds!

    I admire you.

    This is a great video.

    Thumbs up!

  • 1 person is abusing birds and like bars...

  • @robohobo9001 This isn't the only animal cruelty case, and it's definitely not the only one involving birds. If a story happens to make the newspaper, it's usually a short write-up. Animal cruelty is usually swept under the rug because no one wants to see the reality of how common and how sad it is. Please write to your legislators to insist on stricter animal cruelty laws and for better enforcement of existing laws.

Irena Schulz - Bird Lovers Only

  • coming from the son and daughter of parents who owned an exotic bird store in antioch, thank you for doing this! we hav seen many cases of bird neglect

  • Thank you, Ms Schulz, for creating this video! Most people only see stories of dog, cat, and horse abuse and neglect. Finally a video depicting an actual animal cruelty case involving birds! And it was a WIN for the BIRDS! Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful video. I will pass this one around!

  • i own a rescue and have had so many birds that take YEARS to earn their trust and love back. i do house inspections before i re-home a parrot as well. my parrots also eat dinner with the family at the table and are out of the their cages half the day. with at LEAST 6 toys in each cage. the lager ones have 10X10X8 flight cages outside for summer and come in at night to sleep next to my bed ^_^

and OF COURSE do NOT eat seeds. harrisonsbirdfoods. com

  • Irena these vids always make me tear up... Thank you for posting this...

  • @kestrelmas There are programs on Animal Planet that feature animal cruelty, but they focus on dogs and cats. I felt that a video on birds needed to be made to make the public aware that birds face cruel treatment as well and they cannot be overlooked any longer. Thank you for speaking up.

  • so sad but so true. thank you for posting this sad an beautiful video.

  • 1:09 Looks just like my little Peeko D : I also have my own budgie Casper and 3 pidgeons Jack,Scout and Mary This is very sad and we all need to help stop it!

  • @peekoispet Yes, we do need to report animal cruelty whenever we see it. We will launch a new web site soon that will educate people on how to recognize animal cruelty and how/where to report it.

  • ill help and sorry i haven't talked to you in a long time hight school is getting in the away

  • @treecko101piplup No worries! Concentrate on school...that's most important right now.

    Love,

    Irena and Snowball

  • What a beautiful video. I'll never understand how people can treat such stunning little creatures this way.

  • my bird is so lucky to have love and cuddles every day and as many toys as he can play with. i really cant bear any form of animal cruelty. the pets that are well loved and cared 4 dnt realise how fortunate they are to never know cruelty.

  • no sorry i cant watch ad 2 switch it off, i cant bear 2 see suffering

  • @gingerpixie28 same here, its just too heartbreaking :( ♥ to all the animals

  • I love Snowball, am an ardent proponent of Drs. Patel's and Pepperberg's research, and have shared your videos often. I believe birds have consciousness and the capacity for music. I have the highest respect for your work rescuing and advocating for animals and am myself involved with a bird rescue group in California (Mickaboo). So my question is, friend, Why do you let Snowball's image be used in a Taco Bell commercial, given their corporation's extreme, industrial cruelty to animals?

  • @conuropsis I had no idea that Taco Bell was involved in cruelty to animals at the time. It's difficult to know everything about a corporation or person prior to becoming involved with them. I did find out about Taco Bell's practices over this summer (2010). I was very disappointed and I hope that they will improve their practices through public encouragement that they improve those practices.

  • Thank you for all your heartfelt comments. There is a quote which I would like to share because I feel it sums it up succinctly:

The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but rather, "Can they suffer?" ~Jeremy Bentham

  • @BirdLoversOnly - Thank you for this beautiful and moving video. If people only knew how much these birds suffer in captivity. Like all other wild creatures, they were meant to be free to live their lives as God intended.

  • Beautiful photography of the birds in flight & brings a tear to my eye of the abuse of these birds, as well as others out there including our city dwellers called by some as flying rats. So much anger, hatred, abuse, etc... out there, everywhere. Hope to help.

  • Wonderful video! Very unique. I don't recall another video regarding animal cruelty revolving around birds. THANK YOU!!!!!!! We needed this!

  • Awesome video... thank you! Now let's get the word out there... and help our feathery friends.

  • I truly love birds, and this breaks my heart.

  • @TravellerFellow You are a dear Joe Z for posting this on facebook! You are a hero for rescuing Peaches and your other birds. We need to promote your rescue video of Peaches. That is an outstanding story with a happy ending.

    Linda

  • @mdragon180 Me too!! I wanna be a voice for all animals in need too!

THANKS for sharing this excellent vid with me Debs!

  • Irena.....I have a huge lump in my throat as I listen to this. It is such a sad fate that too many birds suffer. Impulse buys usually turn into neglected birds. Praises to you for such a wonderful song and video.

    Hugs!

Jan and Valentine,Tara and Admiral Bird too!

  • great vid

  • I'm going to help....

  • HI Irena thank you for putting this up. I just can't watch it and see the suffering that I have seen in the pictures we saw on Facebook. I know how bad it was and is and can be. I will watch it some other time. LOve and big hugs. Barb :)

  • It hurts me to see that some people just not feel the responsibility to take care of the beautiful parrot they bought...or took it from nature itself. Please protect parrots...

  • I'm an animal lover and it hurts me how people can do this to such wonderful animals :'(

  • Thank you, Irena, for all you do!!

  • Irena, this is extraordinary! Powerfully and beautifully done!

    -Paula

  • WOW! Thanks Irena for this wonderful video to bring awareness on animal cruelty. Birds are so loving, intelligent, and amazing! They deserve to have a glorious life with all the love & care we can possibly give!

Thanks to Sy Montgomery for her excellent contribution.

Your song is so beautiful & says it all with your lovely words. Thanks for all that you do! You are an angel!
