Too funny! I always wondered how they did that. I was all of 6-years-old at the time and I remember being baffled at what I was looking at. I was never able to get a handle on exactly what I was seeing. Were they puppets? Was it trick photography? What was it? Thanks so much for clearing up the confusion 40+ years later.
The upside down face was created by Paul Winchell who was a ventriloquist and had a kids show out of NYC he marketed it as a toy with the name of Mr Oswald. Paul also invented the artificial heart but was never given credit
Sandy Becker was on Metromedia Channel 5, oh Norton Nork, you've done it again, he was super. I liked the professor and other skits he did too. Damn, now I have his theme song in my head.
A Uncle Floyd member used to do this bit back in the 1970's...

Wow!...I remember "Winchell Mahoney Time"...loved Paul Winchell, wish they hadn't taped over all of his shows to save money (what a waste!)

@tonythehammer Yes, it was the polymath Winchell who invented this upside-down business. I remember seeing this routine in '63.

Sandy was so amazingly cool. I wish kids today could look back and remember when there where humans on television, with their imperfections and all.

Remember when Sandy did "Mr. Bass Man" using this technique? A hoot!
