While mating is instinctual, a lot of that behavior is learned as far as roles go. Years ago, my mom had a horse in training and at that barn, an older female dog who had been spayed would try to mate a neutered male cat there simply because it was something she saw the horses doing all of the time. It's just normal animal behavior.
