Are you sure that the Tibetan occupation is only as brutal as the Palestinian one? From what I've seen the Chinese are far harsher on the Tibetans than the Israelis are on the Palestinians. I totally agree. I am an atheist and no matter how much you and I will disagree on some matters about god and the universe it will never end up with one of us killing the other with bombs or subjugating the other under brutal sharia-like rule. Sam Harris makes very important points about the differences with religions and their connection to violence. He is very correct about this no matter what some Muslims might want to believe.

There were more murders in the U.S than acts of terrorism.
Does Sam Harris even know what fundamentalism means? In order to be a muslim, you have to follow the fundamental beliefs of Islam. He fails to show any fundamental beliefs or verses of the Holy Quran in Islam justifying killing of innocent people, declaring war on christians/jews, Islam taking over the world, ect.

Things are even worse than Sam Harris is thinking. The Qur'an contains contradictory passages. Imams solve that by invoking the Principle of Abrogation: that later passages cancel earlier ones. All the "religion of peace" quotes in the Qur'an were written while Muhammad was still in Mecca, trying to get along with a religiously diverse community. All the war-quotes were written while he was in Medina, plotting to make war on anybody who was not with him.
Maybe moderates are responsible but guess what, if the war on fundamentalism is to be won it will have to be won from the inside and not from the outside.
Most fundies see atheist as outsiders and are closed off to them. I think religious moderates may serve a purpose here by opening up avenues for dialogues with fundies.

Are you sure that the Tibetan occupation is only as brutal as the Palestinian one? From what I've seen the Chinese are far harsher on the Tibetans than the Israelis are on the Palestinians. I'm a Christian but I definitely respect Mr. Harris and want to give him immense credit as an atheist for making a distinction between religions and having a seemingly comprehensive knowledge of the religions he speaks about. I think that the New Atheist Movement has done nothing but increase tensions between Islam and the West. If you believe the corrupt ideas of Sam Harris then there is no point in trying to establish a peaceful dialogue with Islam, because that religion is inherently violent and is not compatible with modernity. Things are even worse than Sam Harris is thinking. The Qur'an contains contradictory passages. Imams solve that by invoking the Principle of Abrogation: that later passages cancel earlier ones. All the "religion of peace" quotes in the Qur'an were written while Muhammad was still in Mecca, trying to get along with a religiously diverse community. All the war-quotes were written while he was in Medina, plotting to make war on anybody who was not with him.

Criticism of Islam has been hijacked by Christian fundamentalists, who don't understand that the criticisms which apply to Islam also apply to Christianity. This is why I'm wary of the anti-Islamic movement, because their ranks are made up of Christians and racists. Very little intellectual argument takes place.

The lower heavens don't necessarily mean the atmosphere. That is your interpretation. If you want to criticise the religion, I suggest you undertake the more complex task of disagreeing with many of its faulty core concepts, rather than quoting verses and scientific inaccuracies which will inevitably exist in ALL religious documents, as they are works of fiction by men of faith and not science.
The moral objections are far more relevant.
