Carlin was a genius when it comes to words and humor. Did you all know that the sign of intelligence is having a sense of humor? Maybe it is not Carlin's humor but your lack of, that makes it uneasy for you. Anotherwords, maybe you just aren't bright enough to know humor even if it fell upon you.
We had this album when I was a kid! I still have it..I"m almost 50 and can still recite almost the whole thing; I still thing Carlin was funniest when he wasn't so angry and "blue." Just my humble opinion from someone who has heard it all....
@vickilaw I found this album ("Take-Offs and Put-Ons") in a neighborhood record store back in the early seventies when I was 15 and bought it for a steal. I played it incessantly and loved that it made my mom laugh every bit as hard as I did. ("Despite the several shooting incidents, it was considered an ideal marriage...") And I agree with you--he was much funnier before he became so bitter. But that's life, I guess; Carllin suffered some major setbacks later in his personal life.
Oh man, I had forgotten about Al Sleet's "inside every silver lining there's a dark cloud". And I even used that as my motto for the personal information with my senior picture in the high school yearbook.
George's first LP, "Take Offs & Put Ons" someow entered our home around '69, when I and my brothers were in late grade school; we played the heck out of it, howling continuously even though we couldn't have understood all that much of it. It carved itself into our minds though, and now forty years later the sound is still familiar & the content still spices up our banter. I know "AM & FM" made it to CD, but I don't think his debut ever did?
@DudeinGA He was a disc jockey while he was in the USAF and after he was discharged. Carlin and Jack Burns formed a comedy team and went hollywood to pursue stand-up. They split up and shortly after that Carlin changed his act to the more familiar act of his HBO special and his albums.
ooh calm dowwn. i ♥ george carlin i hav since i was like 9. but he looks like 20 when this pic was taken and its in black and whitee soo idk. maybe im just clueless? lol
Yes, 'Fan', George performed this "local news" parody on several variety shows during that period- you might want to see a 1966 black & white excerpt from "THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON", where Carlin's performing part of this {see "Johnny Carson Show #15"}.
"Take-Offs..." was on RCA's budget label Camden...before the Little David days. On that disc, he talked about a radio station in Walla Walla, Washington...I don't believe he ever worked there--maybe he just thought Walla Walla was a funny name for a town. He says he saw Duran Duran, Talk Talk and Tirez Tirez there not long after they played New York New York and it was sponsored by Johnson & Johnson..
I don't get the Big hand on the 4 and the little hand on the 2, and it's time for the six a clock report joke??? I know he means that it is 2:20 and it's a six a clock report. but to me it isn't really a joke
The joke about having a 6-o'clock report at 2:20 was the kind of tame, nonesensical humour they enjoyed back in the 60's... it's interesting to see how the standards of joke telling have changed :)
@framistroid Good question. Stating 'one joke is funnier than another' is dependent on the listeners' preference of material. Some people find nonsensical humour to be funnier than expletive-laden outbursts.
It sucks that I never got to be in one of his shows. Now it's one more to be inducted into the list of brilliant performers that I'll never get to see...
I Love how he says the DOW dipped 600 points to get a laugh... we in the modern age have seen it happen recently... not quite as funny >_<

This is George Carlin. He is a comedian. Get it through your head. It's suppose to make you laugh.
greatsharkman 2 years ago
I was talking about the previous people who tried to say what the real time would be if the little hand was on the 2 and big hand on 4.
They thought it was 4:10, so i was correcting them. Get it through your head...
tthayer2 2 years ago
Does that mean 6:00 is the new 4:20 or that 4+2 equals the answer to the universe? I have my towel do you?
Now suppose the big hand was on my right wrist and the small hand was on my left would the third hand be used for... uhm nevermind.
George, I sure do miss your humor. :(
Samsarai 2 years ago
Do you have the book with the big words DON'T PANIC? :) I didn't even catch the 4+2 implication (which I'm sure he wasn't using hehe)..
