  • @aimhigh2k2 I just bought one of these for my dad's birthday, is the quality crap?

  • @GroundInfantry -- Oh no, the quality is really nice, particularly considering it doesn't cost alot. Bang for your buck :) He'll be impressed for sure.

  • @aimhigh2k2 thank you for your prompt response.

  • @GroundInfantry -- you're welcome! I just happened to be up this late. lol. Thanks for your comments!

  • @aimhigh2k2 hey I got the rodden berrys phaser made by the same prop makers that did the show for trials and tribulations it cost 6 hundred is rodden berry a good make? one more thing is diamond select star trek toys good? need help thanks

  • @henryo75 -- Nice! :P I don't know much about the Roddenberry products but I imagine since they're so expensive they would be authentic replicas. They certainly look it! The Diamond Select Toys is not close to those, it's more of a prop that can be used without mucking up an original replica as they aren't actually replicas, hence the name "toys". However, they work properly and have cool effects while the replicas from Roddenberry are simply replicas. You probably know more of course

  • @aimhigh2k2 not a lot thank you for your help

  • @henryo75 -- Oh ok... not a problem :)

  • I just got one that I plan to use when I make my next William Shatner impression video. I love this thing though the motor running is a little loud. Also, the thing went dead on me, and when I rounded up some new batteries it's still dead, so I'm HOPING that brand new out of the package batteries will get it working because I just paid $35. for this! Great review! Have you heard any complaints of this not working?

  • @davesimpressionsetc -- Thanks Dave! You do impressions too eh? Cool :P Yeah it is a bit loud. lol. It should work with battery replacements. If you got it from Diamond Select, you should be fine... I have not heard any complaints of it not working though to be honest.

  • @aimhigh2k2 Cal, the batteries were fine, the problem was with a connection inside in the area where the "Try Me" tab pulls out. Kinda hard to explain here but it's working fine now. I wish the motor wasn't so loud though. Makes it difficult to use in a video. I may have to take it apart and shove some insulation or something in there or disable the motor function all together, I'd hate to do that though.

  • @davesimpressionsetc --- Ahh... yeah I agree Dave. Not for real use (i.e. filmic) but obviously I'm not planning on doing that anytime soon. Paramount might get mad. lol

  • @aimhigh2k2 Yeah, I've got mine loose sitting on my nightstand just in case the crew needs to get a hold of me. lol

  • @davesimpressionsetc -- beam me up!!!!!

  • Why don't someone make an actual cell phone that looks like this ?

  • @ebiros2 -- yeah i know, right? That would be awesome. Flipping it up and it makes the sound :)

  • we don't want to see what the flaming box looks like!

  • I just got the Toys R Us exclisive version of this from my local comic store. Do you think the motor is an optical illusion, or an electronic feature? My family and I are still scratching our heads over that.

  • @Prinplup15 --- Wow, a Toys R Us exclusive? Any difference? Yeah, it's an optical illusion for the most part, but something does move since it makes a sound. :)

  • @aimhigh2k2- Not really. It has the same sounds and voices as yours.....the box is just different. They also had the phaser at the store as well. Unfortunately for me, no job equals no extra money for phasers. :P

  • @Prinplup15 -- Hmm, okay. Maybe they just upgraded the box then. lol. Ouch, sorry to hear that... priorities, I can empathize! Good luck on that quest.

  • Sweet.

  • @BondFreek -- thanks! Are you getting one?

  • @aimhigh2k2 When I can afford it, along with a Trycorder and #2 phaser. Yes I'm closet ultra True Trek nerd.

  • @BondFreek -- awesome. lol. I do have the tricorder too :)

  • Very cool I love it :) Where can I buy one of these Star Trek Communicators? Toys R Us? BTW I am posting a brand new Star Trek TOS documentary on my channel every week for the next 30 weeks. Come check it out my friend.

  • @RedPortiaOne -- I'm not sure if Toys R Us has this, I got it directly from Diamond Select Toys at their website. Cool, I will have to take a look :) Thanks

  • Cool replica and a GREAT Kirk impression!

  • @TheAmazingMikey -- Thanks Mikey!! Yes indeed it's a fun gadget :-D I appreciate the compliment! Captain Kirk out :P

  • Very cool toy. I don't believe I heard a price? Low $200's?

  • @SamHillFilms -- thanks Sam! Nah... it's like $30 to $35 :P

  • Good review, that seems really neat.

Would make a good gift for my tech obsessed, star trek-minded brother-in-law!

  • Thank you! Yep, this is what being a Trekker is all about ;) So if he is one it would be a fantastic gift if he doesn't have it yet. Thanks for watching!

  • Cool...you got the shiny gold grill cover! They have 2 versions...one with a Flat gold color grill...which doesnt look as good as the other.

  • Yeah I do have that but this video is actually the flat gold color grill. lol. I got this before I got the other one, so I kinda wish I had waited before doing the review :P

  • i have that and the black handle phaser their awsome

  • Totally, my handle for the Diamond Select one is different than my remote phaser that I got for getting the HD-DVD Toshiba deal. lol

  • hey man Guess what i got a comunicator today !!! its soo fun isent it ?!?!?!?!?!

  • Sweet!!!! Yes it is definitely fun and plain cool. Not just museum material but actually works :) Congrats!

  • yeah i was sooo happy when i saw it in a store window and it was $55 but dude it was sooooo worh it !!!

  • Wow... you got it right there? I guess sometimes looking at the actual product is worth more than waiting for it to come from online, etc. 'cause you get to witness it firsthand. Anyway, cheers to that!!!

  • yeahh it was a mega lucky find i was walking through streets near sydney harbour and i saw a shop called kings comics, looked in the window and saw some other star trek toys then i looked to the left of the window and then i was like OMG !!!! and i ran in and braught it straight away !!

  • Sweet... that store sounds familiar, but I've never been to Australia. :) Well that's fantastic you have it now. That reminds me... I still have to do a review on the tricorder! lol

  • I was soo happy when I got this communicator..

  • Congrats!! It's very nice stuff, not just a toy but a prop replica.

  • Some one on here said they didn't like voy or ds9? How can you be a trekkie and say that! I love all the shows and movies. I just bought the science tricorder and phaser. I'm very happy with both. When I heard the whine of the tricorder scanning I was on cloud 9!

  • The new box that has kirks picture on the bottom left and mostly blue box, those lids are plastic so be careful every one what you buy. don't buy from toysrus there plastic lids. and you will NOT be happy

make sure it's real metal or brass

  • The really interesting thing is that a communicator is just a cell phone to a kid today, even the new one from the movie. But back as a kid in the early seventies having a tiny box you could carry around to talk to anyone you wanted to was a dream, something kids pretended to do in the back yard MAGIC. For those of us that coveted those TOS props, that MAGIC we felt will never dim no matter how much technology marches on.

  • True, but Star Trek communicators had an uncanny technology that allowed communication without the utilization of a satellite. Ah, how far we've come.

  • I completely agree!

  • I just got one myself. Great toy, but the buzzing sound it makes when it's opened detracts from it...

  • True, it does buzz. Next to the real thing though, it's not bad. The real one will cost an arm and leg (if there are any left that is!). lol

  • That is the prop that I was obsessed with as a kid in the early seventies. I can remember playing Star Trek and we built a communicator with a small box w/a flap and covered it with tin foil. I wanted one more then anything. Picked up the playmates version in the ninties and it was cool but not the real thing. You simply must have the real metal grill. Cant wait to get mine.

  • You're gonna love it, I got two of them :)

  • haha nice

i wanna get one i have got the Tos phaser

    its pretty cool

but i wanna get the comunicator as well

    looks reall cool

  • Sweet. Yeah, it'll complete your collection for sure. I almost have a museum here. lol

  • nice !!

do u have an micromachines or johhny lightning star trek legends ?

  • No micromachines unfortunately nor the legends. I do have the small Diamond Select versions of each era ship however (except for any DS9 or Voyager, as I don't like those shows like I do TOS and TNG).

  • ooh wow so u have the like big play set ships ?

    like the:

    1701

    1701-a

1701 warth of karn and the battle damaged enterprise ?

oooh and the enterprise D and E ??

oohh yeahh pretty good shatner impersination !!

  • Yeah, I've got those plus I have the huge replica of the 1701 from Master Replicas with a signed plaque by Shatner and Nimoy. I have a video of that.

Hey thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it :) Did you see the Shatner/Kirk impression I did recently?

  • nicee nicee

and yeah i havent had the chance to see your other vids

i should check them out soon ishh yeah !!!

  • how do you like the new comunicators?they are like master reps. only cheaper I have 2

  • wait are u talking about the new star trek movie comunicators or the tos style ?

  • like a master replica, are you on drugs.. you can not compare a master rep to this .now the Vegas ones you can because the same people made it and you can inter change the moire' motor with this you can't fit. also these buttons are cheap plastic with a really bad paint job. but for $30 it's ok. now toys rus has one on there site and I heard the lid is plastic but in the picture the buttons look metal so tomorrow I have to see it . go to my video and watch part 1,2 and 3 of 3.

    enjoy

    Jeff

  • I'm not comparing this to Master Replicas at all, it's pretty much impossible to find one these days so I think this is the closest you'll get to it for the price. You've got a museum! I'll have to check it out soon here, thanks!

  • I thought you say master replica on this video that's why I said it.

I Just bought a 5Th one at toys are us. very light weight and good to wear with Velcro on a belt. it's light weight because these new lids are cheap plastic and you really have to flip it hard to open it.

I only bought to check it out.

The ones from EE not only have the extra sound but is painted a gloss black and a and very shiny antenna the non EE is a dull paint dull brass antenna but more real to look at

  • Nice Shatner! But I'm curious, does anyone know how its size compares to the original prop? Usually this stuff has to be pretty oversized, but I'm not familiar enough with Trek to judge for myself how this replica relates.

  • Thank you, thank you very much! :) I believe it is of adequate or comparable in size to the original, but could actually be a tad smaller, IMO.

  • most Diamond Select Toys are the same size as the original prop.

  • Well done on your review. This is an excellent reproduction that is priced just right. A must have. Thanks.

  • Thanks, appreciate the comment! I'm glad you enjoyed it, it is definitely a must buy!

  • we are both nerds rock on brother

  • Hey Man what's up??? Yeah rock on bro!

  • Good vid! Very selling:).. I have thought buying that communicator, and now I'm sure I got to have one! Maybe I'll buy the phaser with that too..

  • Thanks! It's a beautiful thing to have, IMO. Goes up right into my "museum". :P

  • Just bought one of these on eBay, but I forgot how shitty the exchange rate is (US vs. AUS dollar). I wish I'd gotten it a few months ago when we were at something like 95 US cents.

    Fuck.

  • That sucks... if you used the Microsoft Cashback program you could have gotten it at a discount but they don't deal with eBay at the moment anymore, sadly.

  • Any news on if the prices changed? I haven't checked recently.

  • Yes Mister Spoooock!

  • I love this toy! I can't wait to get mine. It is almost identical to the the Master Replicas' communicator (except it's mostly plastic opposed to metal) and it's only $30!

  • Hey... are they already released in europe??

ill give you 5 Stars because that communicator is pretty cool

  • I think they should be in Europe, but you can always order it from Diamond Select Toys online. Thanks for the comment and stars! Gladed you like it :)

  • Cool... I'll have to get one of these now! Thanks.

  • No problem :) Sorry, I've been away. lol

  • hi, i like the kirk impression!!

    cool.

  • Thanks! :)

  • That's awesome! I can't wait until they're finally released here in Ireland. They've been delayed for a month now and I'm really getting annoyed because I see how great they are here and I just WANT MY OWN ONE!!!!!

  • I hear ya and feel your pain! Hope you got one!

  • i know how to make that into the exclusive model,, you cut the jumper and you will have all the sounds then!

  • how do you do it then, cos i dont know wot the jumper is, wot does it look like?

  • look on youtube how to do it. I forget but it's only 1 wire.

I have both but won't change them

  • how do you do it then?

  • No need, I got the one that has everything :) But thanks
