Tolkein wanted to create folklore, British legend that wasn't borrowed from another country (i.e. arthur and the knights of the round table is apparently french in origin?) so he made up his own. Lord of the Rings was originally a childrens story, it was written for kids and like Harry Potter, is LOVED by adults and children alike.

Well I know what you mean about LOTR, though I don't think it's really a children's book. The language is a lot more complex than Harry Potter, though I wouldn't agree about the structure being cleverer. I think some of the structure of LOTR is, well, odd and unneccesary.
