I have both the Honda Eu1000i and the Yamaha EF1000is, They are both pretty quiet but the Honda wins. The Honda is quieter for sure. Even my wife asked me why the Yamaha is louder than the Honda. Besides the noise difference they are both great generators.
No load on the genny!! are you pulling legs?? all gennys are noisy to a point and i do agree Yamahas are reasonably quiet but please tell the truth with the genny operating at maximum power...
You can try it yourself. This is how the inverter generators work. With the ECONOMY switch on, the generator will vary engine SPEED depending on load. With the economy switch off, it will run at full throttle.
ECO switch OFF: plug in camper (load), unplug camper (no load) = no difference in sound. ECO switch ON: plug in camper (load) generator rev's up and makes some more noise, unplug camper, generator makes less noise.
You say in the test that it is as laod as it will get, I think that if you put a load on it while it was running on a cincrete surface you will see a big jump in noise output, after all why run a generator unless you are drawing power from it.
When the "economy" switch is turned OFF, the generator operates at full throttle, thereby creating as much noise as it can. With little or no load it will cut the throttle back and fast idle.
I do know this...... but the noise will be that much louder with a load on especially on fast speed. I have done this test on the honda EU1000i which works the same way.
Observations: The little Yamaha is almost always the quietest generator in the campgrounds that I've visited. Many people stop by and comment on how quiet it is.
Video:
Not having access to a proper chambor I felt (and still feel) that my backyard experiment better represented REAL WORLD conditions that one might use the generator in. My backyard measurements show that the generator SOUNDS LOUDER THAN what the specifications say, however it still is quieter than needed for a USFS campground.
very difficult measuring without a soundcabin, specific surroundings will always influence the measuring. Reflection on the wooden wall in the back etc etc. I'm specifically fond of the Yamaha-generators, especially when it comes to parts after the sale!

If the generator will last 12 hours at 1/4 load on a full tank, does that mean it will last 24 hours at 1/8 load on a full tank?

How loud something is is dependent on how close you are to it?? LOL. Who knew?

Nice video though.

Actually, this is how INVERTER generators work.
