I am also an American raised in Palawan. I must say that there is a point made by the uploader of this video, but the idea that there can be no real unity among Filipinos due to diversity among "ethnolinguistic groups"... I disagree. Iloilo and its neighbouring provinces, amid the fact that they are apart have a strong sense of unity with each other; the Tagalog-speakers of Luzon have this unity, too. The unity of these groups with each other, though, is incomparable with those of other nations.
This is great!! Makes me proud to be Palaweno and Filipino!! My mother loves the Cuyonon folk songs as a native Cuyonon. I understand but I need to learn to speak:(
i was truly touched by your message. i hope there's a way na makapag-aral ako ng ibang filipino language kasi naiinggit ako dun sa mga kakilala kong bisaya tapos nagkukwentuhan in their native tongue

@ sisigman. I think your comment really insults our country's drive for independence and the hundreds of years we as a people have tried to break way from colonial rule and perpetuates the stereotypes that the Americans and the friars before them said about Filipinos being disunited.
England and France are governed successfully without Federalism. Federalism is just another American model and will fail because of our culture of corruption, our weak state structure vs strong families, etc.
well, finding a single collective soul insults the many centuries of independence of our ethnolinguistic groups. Luzon empire is older than the Philippines you know, and RP insults that. We have never broken from colonial rule. There will be disunity because Manila wants to promote uniformity out of diverse ethnoliguistic groups, instead of accepting diversity. FRANCE wiped out its other languages and I don't want to mimic it.
"Filipinos do cultural exchanges more with other countries instead of among themselves."
Thats a very profound and true statement. The solution is not federalism or a new form of government. Its our culture. We need to change our mindset and look more into our soul as a nation kasi as of right now, with our culture being what it is, it doesn't matter what form of government we have, there'd be no changes. We need to learn from our indigenous bros and sis and find our collective national soul.
the first thing you need to accept is that we are diverse ethnolinguistic groups. That we are one is a mentality propagated by colonizers. we dont have a "collective national soul" (thus, efforts on nation-building, but turns out they're oppressive because they're trying to wipe out our differences instead of acknowledging them).
Form of government matters based on research. Almost all countries that put high premium on their intranational diversity have federal governments.
I disagree with you strongly. We are the same race whatever "ethnolinguistic" group you belong to and to have a shared common history stemming from pre-colonial contacts, colonial oppression and resistance to colonialism.
Federalism will lead to the Balkanization of the Philippines IF they follow what you said. If we don't change the culture, reforms will only be half-ass. YOu can have the best leadership in the world, but if the people refuse to reform, then what good is it?
ok lang maging regionalist. what's wrong in loving your own region? kesa yun nangyari, tignan mo, pag sinabing BISAYA, asan ang mga CUYUNON dun? so, ako, go for regionalism. it will make this country a better place. after all, regionalism is nationalism.
I'm an American that lived in the jungles of Palawan in ang bahay kubo for two years. I saw Lolita open for Freddie at Ka Freddie's in 1999. Hairs standing on the back of my neck. Freddie, Asin, and the Cuyo/Palawan band, 'Sinika' are the closest I ever came to "Uton na loob". Maraming salamat.
