  • it just wasnt meant to be for davis he had quite a few chances to be a champ but just couldnt get over the hump . but just think he beat thomas hearns, hilmer kenty, and aaron pryor all in the same olympic trails. great amateur. but as a pro a good contender

  • The last scheduled 15-round fight? I always thought the last 15-round fight ever was between Evander Holyfield and Dwight Muhammad Qawi (nee Braxton) for the WBA Crusierweight Title.

  • Aaron Pryor used to beat the shit out Howard Davis in sparring sessions.

  • @Rasclot222 Hes a legend though..

  • This was towards the end of Howard's career and you can tell he wasn't into it. He had a lot of issues with Management and was going through some stuff. He has rebounded in retirement with MMA as the top guy in stand-up. Howard Davis Jr. is a legend and we should be so lucky to watch his previous work!

  • Quite ironic the so-called last 15 rnds fight ended in the first rnd....

  • Howard was one of my all-time faves.

  • I loved Howard. I always felf he was the best boxer on the 76 team. Just not toooo gooood as a pro.

  • Howard is the man. I met him before, he trains a friend of mine... one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He lost heart because of the corruption and politics in the sport.

  • I hated that Howard had to lose to Jim Watt.If the Rosario fight was a 15 rounder, Howard would've beaten Edwin.

  • Actually, the last 15 round fight was the following week in Mexico when Jorge Paez beat Calvin Grove for the IBF Featherweight title via 15 rd majority decision. The date was 8.04.88

  • dude ur retarded he said this was the last 15 rnd in the us you dumbass

  • Wow. Spoken like a true 18 yr. old boy. Show some respect, son.

  • Great fight too!

  • y did the stop 15 round fights

  • It happened after Duk-Koo Kim died of brain injuries in his fight with Ray Mancini. This fight was for the WBA Lightweight title. This was in the early 80's. The WBC continued with 15 round fights. They shortened them from 15 to 12 rounds for safety. The WBC soon followed the WBA. 15 round fights were pretty much done with around 1987, 1988. Around that time.

  • McGirt was very sharp in this fight. This may be his best (besides the Simon Brown fitht). I wish Howard Davis made it more as a professional. He was one of the best amateurs of all time. Amazing hand speed.

  • Yes,fastest hands I have ever seen.

  • Thanks for posting this...

  • Howard's problem was his trainers. They wanted him to be the next Ali. Howard would never commit and therefore by not commiting yourself to the fight(Never Trying To Get Hit) When the time came and he did get hit he wasn't condition for it. Believe it or not folks you must get hit inorder to grow as a fighter the time will come when you get hit alot or take a solid shot if you never had to deal with that you'll fall flat on your face when hit. Just ask that track star Roy Jones Jr

  • Howard Davis is my father... and you are right it was a big issue with training and management which really hurt his career. He is still an Olmypic gold medalist. He took most of his title fights at short notice, that seemed to be the way the business was conditioned back then...it was to keep certain fighters from getting that fair chance at winning titles. My Brother, Dyah Ali Davis is boxing Pro now out of Las Vegas. His record is 14-1 lose by decision. He's sparred with a lot of 2days greats.

  • McGirt reminds me of the monster out of the ALien movies with the shape of his head.

  • what was historical for me was both of these fighters hale from Long Island N.Y. Buddy was from Suffolk County i believe BrentWood and Howard is from Nassau County i believe Glen Cove... i trained with Eddie when he was trying to make a comeback and to find out i use to date his daughter Tamara...i never told him tho'..not something you wanna say to a dude your about to spar hey i use to make out with your daughter...

  • Yeah your right. My coach know him from bay shore

  • Howard Davis is from Glen Cove but resided in Hempstead,NY since the Olmypics, he now works with American Top Team training extreme fighters the technique of boxing.

  • My god-brother Tokunbo Olijade a former prospect at welter(Michael Olijade's baby brother) was just talking to me about Dyah Davis any relations..i heard he maybe eddie or Howards son....i use to be in Love with Eddie's daughter Tamara in Freeport Long Island alas the relationship didnt last(9th grade) but she was one of the sweetest people in the world wonder how she's doin..anyways i feel Eddie wasnt given the same treatment that SRL got but he was just as good just rushed

  • Dyahs my brother....Howard Davis is our father. We just got back from Puerto Rico late last month. We were in San Juan helping Edison Miranda prep for Arthur Abraham. Dyah is now under Mayweather Sr. in Vegas. I was born in Glen Cove. I use to live in the projects out there also. Check Dyah's myspace 4 his fight info.

  • Post more McGirt.

  • Howard had no business taking this fight on short notice. Some more preparation, and he would've put in a better effort.Arguably the fastest fighter in his day.

  • Thanks 4 giving my pops (Howard Davis) props on his hands. Til this day Mayweather Jr. is the only one I see with that kind of hand speed. My Bro Dyah Davis is a hot prospect now training under Mayweather Sr. in Vegas now. Same speed as pops with a lot more kick, He's fighting at 178-180 Light-Heavy weight.

  • I wish your brother all the best.

  • My Brother Dyah has a fight next week on the 8th of July Vs.Dante Craig. Dyah also has a site on Myspace...No footage yet but he will soon we are putting something together for Youtube and for his Myspace.

  • Hey Dan , Howard was one of my favorite fighters.I was really hurt when he did not beat Jim Watt, and a little dissapointed when he got knocked down by Rosario in the final round to lose a razor thin descision! A lot of people forget that he put the first blemish on Meldrick Taylors record when they fought to a draw.Meldrick was the up-coming Olympic boxer just like Howard used to be at the time. Howards hands were faster which was new for Taylor!

  • He also beat Aaron Pryor in the tryouts to make the 76'Olympic Team. Look out for my Brother LightH/ Dyah "ALI" Davis-Myspace-. He has a lot of my Fathers skills, but he has KO power to stop a fight. His last fight he won 1 min. into the 1ST rd. I talked to my Father yesterday he told me that he was collecting some more of his fights to create a highlight reel. I have all of his Olmypic fights on tape they have to be converted from VCR 2 Disc. When I went 2 PR,they all said my pops beat Rosario.

  • That's a fight I would love to see, interested in both Rosario and Davis. Camacho-Rosario. Mostly only read about these guys in boxing mags at the time they were fighting.

  • McGirt was something back in the day. Very good feints and evasive head movement, unorthodox style, but very effective. Had a head like the Queen Alien's though.

  • That isn't true, is this really the last scheduled 15 round fight ever?

  • yes. that was the last of the 15rd in the US.

  • No I found out it wasn't true there was a fight with Jorge Paez and Calvin Grove a month after this.

  • I believe that Paez fight was in Mexicali, Mexico.

  • Oh you said in the US but I was responding to the title, I wonder what was the last one to actually last 15 rounds.
