  • One of the saddest songs ever written.

  • Beautiful A. J. I agree with you geohab!

  • YOU DONT STEAL SONGS LIKE THIS, THIS IS A TRUELY GREAT TRIBUTE TO A GREAT SONG AND ALL WHO HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT.

  • #1 Gene

    #2 Allen

I didn't even listen to Waylon.

  • Nice... but Waylon is better :-)

  • I WANT THIS SONG PLAYED AT MY FAREWELL PARTY. BUT I DONT THINK SHE WILL BE THERE.

  • Any man who has been betrayed by the one he gave his heart to can relate to this song. We focus on the men who cheat but remember for every bastard that cheat there is a bitch. lol

  • omg!!!! alan brings tears to my eyes......

  • I too think of Gene Watson first when I hear this song, but I have to say Alan Jackson did a really great job. I don't call it stealing either. In fact, Gene Watson was not the first person to ever record this. Little Jimmy Dickens recorded it, and it was written by Lawton Williams.

  • OLE WAYLON DOES IT BEST

  • Almost as good as GENE'S

  • Alan does not have to steal anything, He's good at any song he sings...

  • This isn't stealing. This is honoring.

  • To alwayssme.....I have come to feel that Alan Jackson does this particular song far better than anyone so far, and that includes my beloved Gene Watson..

  • @ki4cif sorry got to disagree, i hear this song i see gene watson. just an opinion

  • I never thought that anyone could ever sing this as well as Gene, but I was wrong...I just LOVE this rendition by Alan Jackson..So glad I found it..

  • @ki4cif alan certainly does Genes song great, genes is the best. alan 2nd i love both artists, no one could cover this like alan does,,

  • Very good. I wouldn't have expected anything less from AJ.

  • Awesome version!

  • Mr. Allen Jackson does this song very well! Bless him and his efforts!

  • This is one of the classic songs that never gets old. I just love it! Alan does a terrific job on it. Thanks for sharing this song and I love the steele guitar.

ALL GOLD STARS and thumbs up!! God Bless You! Gwen

  • My dad loves this song and has said numerous times he wants this played at his funeral. It is hard for me to listen to it now just thinking about what he has said. It is one beautiful song.

  • this is the song, iwant played at my funeral, ever since ifirst heard it, ive been looking4it, thanku for the UPload, god bless have a wonderful 2011 :)

  • Joe Nichols does a great job on this song too.

  • AWESOME song by him....... I LOVE this song! I think that this is one of his best! The harmony is the best!

  • A FINE tribute to GENE

  • Alan Did Very Very Great But Gene Watson Mastered This Song...Here Are Some Of My Favs Gene Watson "Love In A Hot Afternoon" Hank Williams "im So Lonesome I Could Cry" And George Jones "the Cold Hard Truth"

  • Waylon did a pretty good job on this song, too.

  • love this song

  • Alan did a great job on Gene's song. There are no 2 artists that do a song the same way. And of course we will always favor the original. But don't slight the way Alan did it.

  • I am a great fan of Gene Watson and Alan Jackson but I like them in there own type of songs. I must say Alan does credit to my farewell party but to me it will always be Gene's song. Gene has sung this song at different ages of his life, from a young man to his older years, and he still made a hit of it. Love you Alan have heaps of your tapes.

  • I think Jackson did a real nice rendition of Gene's song. Gene and Alan each have their own respective styles, and are fantastic emotional song singers in my opinion.

To me, Alan is one of the few young country artists that has kept the old traditional country sound. Hats off to him for keeping country just that.....country......now Garth Brooks however is another story, but this thread isn't about Garth, so I'll stop here.

  • The Original Gene Watson is still my Favorite, But Alan did a good job.

  • Allan does a great job , but it lacks Genes emotion . I don't believe what Allan is dying and hurting, but I feel every word of genes.

But I must add that Allan did but is touch on this one.

  • that was an excellent rendition and tremendous tribute to the Great Gene Watson both of these men have an extraordinary talent , and Mr Alna Jackson did an extraordinary job on this song both men ...... amoazing talents. thank you :)

  • that was an excellent rendition and tremendous tribute to the Great Gene Watson both of these men have an extraordinary talent , and Mr Alna Jackson did an extraordinary job on this song both men ...... amoazing talents

  • GREAT FIDDLE PLAYING BY DON LEMAIRE. JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • Great job Alan !

  • I seen gene here in Florida perform this song and I'm here to tell you he still hits it hard. Alan did great but he messed up on the first verse. World alone. Not old world alone. Second and third verse old world alone

  • YES GENES IS THE BEST BUT ALAN JACKSON IS A GREAT SINGER DID IT AS GOOD AS GENE TO LIKE IT WAS HIS SONG LOVE BOTH RENDITIONS

  • did he retire from touring

  • you ain`t no Gene Watson baby, but, gene ain`t no alan jackson either.

so,guess that makes you even. i know you were singing the sing cause you wanted to and no other reason so, everbody get over it.

    you did good.

  • where did all the steel guitars go?

  • love alan, but noting compares to gene's version. i'm glad he did this tribute to one of the truest country songs ever--probably introduced it to a lot of new folks.

  • Waylon Jennings had this song on one of his early albums and I think it sounds great. I have never seen it on any of his later albums.

  • this is the song they played at my ads funrul

  • Gene sounds true in his feeling when he sings this, Alan just sounds good

  • I would have never thought anyone but Gene Watson could sing this song. Alan Jackson is great on this. Although I still must give the edge to Gene, Alan is very very close to him with this rendition. Both Alan and Gene are fantastic performers.

  • Great job. Alan is one of the few people that could ever hit the high note at the end. He did a great tribute to Gene.

  • Alan runs a close second to Gene on this one. Thanks for posting!

    God Bless,

    Jeff

  • I love his voice ....well done a good job...Shane

  • This is a great song.Barry.

  • I love Alan's music but this song belong's to Gene Watson alone. Since Alan grew up listening to all Gene's songs, I don't think he was trying to better him but rather paying tribute to one of his idols.

  • I never knew that anyone had done a cover version of this song. While Gene's is the best

and no one can equal it, this one is actually quite good. I actually enjoyed hearing it.

Thanks for putting it on here. WendyKS93

  • Alan always has THE best hard harmony singers on his albums. The kind that hits you in the chest. Unlike all the other country recording playboys, he "gets" it that harmony adds those luscious melody lines and he lets the engineers put them hot in the mix so you can actually hear it. Most modern country singers make it a barely audible background afterthought. Good cut!

  • Great job by Allan. There's only one Gene Watson & his version of "Farewell Party" is the best by any real standards but this is an admirable cover for sure.

  • GReat rendition the way he kept the passion throughout. Alan can really deliver, as a true country music legend should. Thank you.

  • did any one of you hear jimmy buckley sing this song ,jimmy sings it very well he is irish ,there again i know that we in the island of ireland ,have great singers.

  • It sounds good to me! *****

    Naomi

  • I don't think Alan was trying to "steal" anything. He made an album performing his favorite country songs, because he wanted to pay tribute to those who inspired him in the first place. If you think it is trying to "stral" the song you are ignorant. Besides, I don't think Alan is in need of stealing hits, he has plenty of his own.

  • It is a real complement to Gene for Alan to do his song, and do it well. Very good rendition.

  • No one can usually out do an orginal song, movie, book, whatever, but Alan Jackson gives one hell of a try. This is a great cover.

  • nice try alan love your music but ..............

  • Someone wrote that Gene Watson's version "is so sad it can bring a tear to a glass eye." Alan Jackson's version is very good, but a clear runner-up to Watson's!

  • I love Alan because he is one of the few true country singers around anymore, however, this is Gene Watson's song and NO ONE can put the emotion in it as he does. In my opinion, this is the best country song EVER and it is Gene's!!!

  • Right on about Gene Watson's version of Farewell Party. Whenever I need to get a real solid country music fix, I play that song and realize why I love country so much!

  • if you think Alan cant sing this song your crazy and Gene dosent have a steady band look at all the live versions he does the steel man is not the same guy.

  • i hate to break it to you but this isnt alans band playing either. these are studio musicians that do the recording then his road band learns the songs and travels with him.

  • this was the song played at my dad wake. So erine shut the heck up

  • Alan did a great job singing this song of Gene Watson. But no one can sing it like Gene Watson with such feeling. Gene Has the special way of pronouncing his words and his band is just awesome

  • Comment removed

  • i agree, just finished watching gene do this song...... alan is as awesome as gene....... two of my true old country singers

  • nice version alan, you made gene proud.

  • love this, alan has done this cover proud, such a fantastic voice

  • I love Alan...he's one of the few "real" country artists...very genuine. When my mom sings this song I bawl my eyes out (she's really great! was offered a spot w/the Tommy Dorsey band...lol, like anyone will know who that was but a few!)

    THanks for the great vids!

  • hes so close to gene,,,its friggin scary,,,this comeing from hush, wow, i,m never wrong when music is involved,,

  • i like farewell party ... great job allan very nice thanks for posting

  • Not Gene, Not Bad.......

  • he's good..this is one of my sisters favorites, she is gone now...

  • Sorry I'm not a very good typist, I used to be a secretary for the Navy, the last comment I made about my breast cancer, I'm now cancer free and it was caught in the very early stages, Thanks to my good doctors, all five of them from up north!!

  • Love this sond ever since I heard it,now I was diagnosed with breast cancer this year, had 2 surgeries and 7 weeks of radiation and the past three years my nephew's new wife did nothing but disturb my peace when i needed rest. I got evicted for this, rented from a relative for 11 years, so I sent thi song to them all!!!Now thay are crying over this and looking for me, they think I'm 30 miles away and I'm safe in another state! And suing them for this atrocity.

  • Hemutu, my husband and I have gone through the same thing, since he was diagnosed with cancer. His siblings quit even calling. Mine too. My neighbor has cancer, she has had the same problem, her kids go right past her house and never even stop to check on her. Her boyfriend too. All I can say is, there is a special place for people like this, sure hope I don't go there.

  • Good singing is good singing. His version rivals Gene Watson's!

  • I Just Luv Gene Watson...But You Know Alan Jacksons Version Here Is Magnificent Also. Nice to listen to each one. Thanks Guys, Pat

  • this reminds me of michael melton -sob- RIP 1991-2009

  • R.I.P Grampa your favv song and it was your last :)

  • I like Alan Jackson's music. However I don't think he can hold a candle to Gene Watson on this song. Still though, a very good song.

  • great cover

  • this is a lovely song thanks for posting it. cheers paddy spow ber..n

  • I'm glad everyone's liked this so much. I tried putting up Joe Nichols' version of this song, but it was disabled!!! Bah.

  • omg just as awesome as gene, no way to choose which is better, ty for the post,, alan has alwayss been a fave, he is so much into the old country sound which i grew up on,

  • yes he does it as good as gene watson

  • Probably the best cover of this Gene Watson's classic. To me, Alan Jackson simply can't sing a bad song....wonderful!!!

  • That harmony is tighter than a banjo string! Dang!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, and the steel guitar is pretty slick too :D

  • Alan certainly does this song justice; he runs a close second to Gene Watson especially on the final note, they both ace it big time. 5******s

Have a great day and God Bless,

    Jeff

  • awesome , second to Gene and right on the money on the high note

  • Allen Jackson is the legend of are times and most people don't even know all of his songs there are hundreds (check out faves)

  • Alan Jackson is probably my favorite C&W singer of all times. There is absolutely no one who can sing "Farewell Party" like Alan Jackson. No one, except, GENE WATSON. Gene, not Alan Jackson not Joe Nichols (both wonderful singers) owns this song. No one can sing "Farewell Party" like Gene Watson. But I'll have to say that Alan Jackson is a very close second.

  • reminds me of my uncles funeral

  • I love to hear Alan sing this song! Alan can sing anything & it sounds great!!!! I do think Gene Watson sings it best but Alan definitely comes in second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This version with Alan Jackson, with Paul Franklin on pedal steel is really nice. However, my favorite remains Gene Watson's version with Lloyd Green on pedal steel. I've heard the late great Jimmy Day play the steel part of this song before too, and it will give you goose bumps and watering eyes when you hear the soul and emotion he puts into it.

  • Ah, so it was Lloyd Green on the Gene Watson version - thought it sounded like him. Thanks. :-)

  • A reliable source tells me it is Paul Franklin! it is outstanding but then he is!

  • Great song! Who's pickin' steel?? In my opinion, it's the steel that makes this song when backing any good country singer.

  • I am a distant relative of Lawton Williams who past away about 2 years ago, and find it interesting to see and hear some of his music. Thanks

  • Gene does this song with a emotion that cannot be duplicated... Alan we love you my friend... but this is a Gene Watson song. I heard Gene say it's his most requested song... Why... You do it right Mr. Gene... like no one else... Perfect! Period!!!

  • Actually the best version belongs to Joe Nichols.

  • I'll take your word on that. I tried to pull it up on the tube but no luck. If its better than GW... I can't understand why its not on this forum.

I'll wait to find Joe's version, but as of now... Gene Watson is the pick since yours is not here to compete.

I'll be seeing Gene Watson & Merle Haggard in Branson Mo in June... can't wait. Twyla in Ca...

  • It's on Joe Nichols "Revelation" CD.

The whole CD is deep like that.

Farwell Party, No Time to Cry, Revelation and others.

Check out a sample on Amazon.

Buy the CD and al of Joe's CDs.

They are all very deep contray to his image on some videos.

  • Thanks man for that , I'll check it out. Joe Nichols... He's cool. Thanks again!

  • Joe is great but no one can match Gene's tone, passion and power. Alan does a great job but both of those guys will be the among the first to tell you they can't match Gene on this one. I'll send you a live version and see what you think after listening to it.

  • I happen to prefer Joe Nichol's interpertaion of the lyric of his Revelation cd.

  • Awsome! But I do like Gene's a bit better. Just a different timber in his voice. But Alan does a great job.

  • This is the best song ever, Alan sounds awesome on this recording, but this is 100%, Gene's song

  • Alan does a good job here. But most will still prefer Gene as I do.

As to the argument on best song ever, George still rules. Check the all time top 500 best country songs, and you'll see George is #1 with "He stopped...." There really is no need to debate these things however, let's just say.... Thanks for posting and enjoy this great music. They don't sing it this way anymore.

  • Ditto BloodNGutts, Once I had to play Alan's version for a guy who thought that "He Stopped Loving Her Today" said it best. I disagreed. Finally got a jukebox with Gene on it. I proved him wrong but you know that old bastard won't admit it!

  • the best country song ever!!!

  • Love this song! He sings it very well!

  • Holy shit he is singing the hell out of Gene's tune but Gene can't ever be replaced Alan's paying his respect Gene

  • this song reminds me of my brother

  • I agree with Paula. Alan does a great job and I would think it was one of the best ever if I hadn't heard Gene do it first.

  • Alan does this song so well. However, he just doesn't have the emotion in it that Gene Watson has. Gene's voice is one of the most phenomenal voices ever and this song for me is his signature song altho I love everything Gene does. This song is so sad but is such a well written one. Alan is doing Gene's style here but still lacks the power than Gene has. I do love Alan Jackson. Thank you for posting. - Paula

  • I actually prefer Alan's version to Gene's....

  • thanks ALOT.

  • Love this song. Alan does this Gene Watson so well. Go AJ Go. Love ya Alan...

  • Another one fro Norway...and i love it too

    :-)

  • i love this song:) it was played at my uncles memorial service:') may he rest in peace:)

  • I love that person in reed ;))

Wery nice music, thanks to Wilburscott & Alan!

    With love from Norway
