  • A mix of shock and adrenaline can do strange things.

  • im in seventh grade and run cross country. I dislocated my knee cap during a race and kept running. my coach told me to watch this video and told me i was like her. i thought i was in pain when i ran but when i saw this i relized i went thrugh nothing compared to her. she really is a true cross country runner. (the girl who runs by at the end is on the high school team for my school!)

  • I'm curious: are high school and college female athletes required to be informed by their coaches about eating disorders, and exercise disorders, specifically the Female Athletic Triad nowadays?

Does anyone know if this girl was diagnosed later with Female Athletic Triad and/or teenage osteoporosis?

  • I give her so much respect. Not many people would finish a race. That is determination.

  • At those who ask how long of a race this is, this is 3.1miles or 5km.

  • ok can someone help me my coach said that running cross country will help me with my 800 does it really help

  • Props to that girl who broke her leg and still finished. She wasnt about to let anything stop her. She literally crawled over the finish line. Respect!

  • i saw this on tv. how did her leg break?? did she bend it wrong?? it looks like these girls are going through torture!

  • @21centuryg i think she tried running through a stress fracture

  • I would LOVE to run in this race.. it looks sooo competitive and thats exactly what i need in order to set a new pr!

  • How many miles is it

  • These are good times for girls. Remember guys, the girls that run cross country arent built exactly like us. They don't have the same lung capacity as we do. So in general it is harder for them to run. But for me and my high school cross country team, I'm a freshman and we are currently 3rd in the state (freshman). We freshman run 8-10 miles a day and our average 5K times are around 18:30.

  • How many miles is this?

  • can't believe she still ended up beating people, when she was crawling, the people who she beat are pussies

  • I am in my school's cross country team (7th grade) we have 2 practices a week and we run 4 KM each practice! My ankle was numb and it hurt sooo bad! But my coach said to keep running and now it's still sore it's been 2 days!!!!!

  • @technosmiles I'm in 7th grade too! Except we have 5 practices a week and we do 3, 4, 5, or 6 every time.

  • @technosmiles Well you're coach is an idiot.

  • @technosmiles Get it checked out. Look up "compartment syndrome."

  • How far are they running? Where im from the girls run 2.5 miles and the times are way faster than this. So is this longer?

  • @buckfever32123 yes this is slightly longer the races are 3 miles instead of 2.5 miles

  • droppin like flies

  • She fell because her leg broke in two places cause she kept running on a stress fracture all season, which was a really bad decision, but that girl is so dedicated. First off, because she kept running even though her bones were slowly breaking, second because after her leg broke the first time, she tried to get up and finish the race, and finally because, when he realized she could no longer stand, she crawled through the finish. Amazing story.

  • @dudeitsmeredith Did she get a stress fracture because she overtrained during the season?

  • @sbtbfanatic She's got the female athlete's triad, which includes osteoporosis. She's malnourished so she can keep her weight down.

  • @dudeitsmeredith

amazing. this girl reminds me of that olympic gymnast girl who broke her ankle but still kept going. Very strong will, these girls.

  • cross country make your bone kinda brittle cuz the runners don't get enough rest and stress fractures form. Her tibia broke, then she fell. when she stood up her fibula broke because it could support her weight.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • The girl who crawled is Claire Markwardt. She crawled because she broke her leg! She missed her sister's wedding that night because she was in the hospital. Her mother was my teacher.

  • i feel bad for her cause she was doing so well

  • haha

  • my sister is in that race, jessica phillips, she came in at 0:42, from seneca east! I also know that girl that came in third, from 0:27-0:30, she fell! That is Britney Stockmaster. Cross Country takes 100% heart. You have to be positive about yourself and keep going no matter what. Well, besides if it is life threatening or something is broken. From someone that has experience (me!) I should know. Well, I hope you see me next year on a video like this! Bye!

  • what guts and courage they have

  • no...actually that would really suck because she broke her leg ya know

  • that girl who crawled is my hero. truly inspirational

  • this sport is 100% all heart

  • i know that girl who finished crawling. no lie.

  • This movie is really still mostly my favorite since this was created! :) I love it. Plus one girl who crawled made my day! :)

  • geez... that was beastly...

  • that is the toughest thing ive ever seen, nothing beats it

  • i am in cross country and mi friend passed out in the middle of the race we couldnt touch him and I had to pass him so our team wouldnt be disqualified

  • you cant help or touch anyone in a race or else ur team and her team gets disqualified

  • this video actually makes me freaking mad. If I was one of those runners I would've stopped to help that poor girl up and we'd cross the finsih line together. And she was crawling because she snapped her leg in two places after running with a cracked ankle.

  • true but you can't give up a race unless it's life threatening. Thats what my cross country coach said though and I agree. Besides there were other people getting her anyway. But her courageness is great and she is brave, I admire that.

  • I mean that your almost finished with your 3 miles you stop to get her and give it up. I just saying that there were coaches unless it was life threating again. I would have stopped if I was one of those runners but my coach always told me not to stop unless someone is about to die or something. Otherwise, the other coaches would get her.

  • Are you kidding, you don't give up you race like that. You need to finish and she needs to finish. Unless it's life threatening then they will be okay. If somebody gave up their race because they felt sorry for me I would be so angry.

  • I admire that girl that finished crawling. She didnt give up.

  • y was that girl crawling?

  • what's the distance?

  • probably a 5k

  • jesus christ my freshman time woulda gotten me 29th...19:31 lol..ugh

  • tss you got me beat. i ran a 20:10

  • Check out a high schooler running a 4 minute mile. Type in German Fernandez mile on youtube.

  • i like how at :29 that girl like dies and then the other girl laughs at her

  • claire goes to my school and is doing great now she is off her crutches and walking just fine :)

  • judging from the times it looks like they were running a 5k no?

  • bwahahhahahahahahaha

  • its like everyone is dying at the finish line

  • she shattered her tibia and broke her fibia than ran untill 45 feet of the finish where it cracked again and she crawled to the finish its inspireing

  • yea it inspired me to do the same thing

    shut up

  • good one:)

  • i go to school in florida, and i heard about this about 4 different times today. god bless her! real dedication is portrayed here.

  • bless her*

  • jesus lives her

  • uhhhhh her leg was like jiggly. im about to throw up.... omg. i feel bad for her but i feel disgusted

  • 115 is my friend Alexis

  • Sorry if my comment seemed degrading to her performance. Its just that I 1st watched the Boys finish and saw the same event happen to a boy with a hearth condition as fought to finish while dropping flat on the ground each meter. He even tried to craw at a moment but fell right back down, and I just felt that that was truly heroic. His struggle was 2x as long as hers and it seemed weird that he didn't get the same recognition with an article mentioning him like she did.....unless I'm wrong

  • This girls tibia broke. She tried to get up and run then it snapped. She crawled twice as fast because she could use her hands and still had a chance because it was one part of the body. The story you talk of sounds great though.

  • i cant believe it when synical people in this world like you pass over events like this with such a haughty air. why not celebrate and praise this girl who overcame adversity? why must you sit there and take away from someone who might have finnished their last race in this manner? what she did was amazing whether or not it was an "expected normality"!

  • I completely agree with astralzenith. To a non-runner or an unserious runner, this may seem astounding or courageous, but to a regular runner this sight should seem like an expected normality. I mean what runner who ran through the entire race bearing agonizing pain would just give up a few meters from the finish line, at a race that big, where you're a few seconds from the finish.

  • they had a write up on the young lady from Berkshire HS in our local paper...truly remarkable what she did...most would have just laid there

  • that's not remarkable, she broke her leg 10m from the finish line, EVERY cross country runner, at STATE, worth her or his weight, would do whatever they could to cross the line. Plus at the finish you're so jacked on endorphins you can't feel pain. So no most would have not laid there. And no she's not a hero. She's just one of the many injuries that occur during the season.

  • wow...i ran in the reginol race for my school. some dude fell and broke his ankel and i picked him up and helped him over the line. still shes a hero she really deserves a medal

  • O_O

    Wow.

  • Now that is awsome. I read the story in SI and i just had to see it because i run xc

  • she was from berkshire and she broke her fibula... if it hadnt broken she might have gotten her PR, they had a story on her in SI

  • what a bad ass...one of the coolest things i've ever seen

  • is it wrong that i think of the grudge and the RING when i see her crawling to the finishing line.... ?

haha anyways, i gave it an instant 5 and she's a hero in my books .. !

  • one of the gutsiest things I've ever seen in sports...God bless her...she deserves a medal

  • Now that's a warrior!!! Not Tiger Woods when he plays a round of golf with a head cold for a million dollars. I hope her leg is healing well.

  • Female - High School - awesome

  • Toughest Competitor Ever!!!

  • dude thats so nasty her legs wobbling like jelly...its like in the harry potter movie where all the bones in his arm are gone..if u seen it then u no wat im talkin bout

  • WOW. what a strong person to be able to get up and finish the race! kudos to her!

  • she didn't get up, she crawled

  • no s*** sherlock! If it were me, i would have just sat there. Technically she DID get up, to her knees at least. Did i ever say she stood up? no. i didnt.

  • that chicks a trooper for still finishing with a tib/fib brake

  • wow those girls are kinda slow compared to some of the girls in our team. they have even surpassed the 18 min. mark!

  • I like how when the first girl at the begining of the clip collapses the girl right behind her's like "wtf haha."

  • 2:30 in if you don't care for all of the filler...but yeah it is hard to tell that what happened until the coach stood her up and the leg wobbled a bit.

  • i thought that if girls ran more than a mile they would become sterile.

kidding, that girl is a baller.

  • The counter didn't say a number when she crossed the line.

  • yah he does shes like 68 , you didnt hear it???

  • you are right. I timed his voice wrong. She got 67.

  • editing mother fucker

    do you use it?

7:15 for 30 seconds of content is fucking ridiculous

  • Your name should be EmptyHeadedAntiHero, you foulmouthed smut headed doofus! Why don't you go back to the grunge rap you're feedin' yourself and quit trying to bring down the rest of everybody else to your and Eminem's level of stoooopidity?! Scumbag!

  • oh look, an INTERNET TOUGH GUY

  • I MAY or MAY NOT be an Internet tough guy.... whether I AM or NOT is not the point (qwhich evidently you don't understand) The point IS... Why don't you see whether you can attempt to UPLIFT this site, people in general and YOURSELF in particular? You might actuallly find it rewarding... and if you cannot see any reason to do so, then kindly keep your assininity to yourself, Bubba!

  • ಠ_ಠ

  • FROSTED BUTTS

  • This reply isn't where it's supposed to be.

    wtf

  • Wow! Someone lives a very sheltered life. Oh, and where did you come up with the name "EmptyHeadedAntiHero"? It makes no sense whatsoever. I think your name should be LookinToGetOutFromUnderThisRockILiveUnder19502 because if you haven't heard the word FUCK before you sure don't live in what we normal people like to call the R.L. you "stooooopidhead"!!!!!!

  • EmptyHero has a point. everyone who watched it thought the same thing.

  • to emptyhero, its not "30 seconds of content", he's probably posting for all the runners in the race.

  • I just realzied at 0:45 the girl on the left side collapses too

  • just because shes tired...no broken bones.

  • why does the guy stand her up after her leg snaps in half?

  • He probably just thought she was tired.

  • Awesome job girl! Notice how none of the other people even pay attention to her or ask what's going on....

  • I don't blame them. They more than likely thought she was just exhausted from the run. There really is no way anyone could have known she broke her leg in 2 or 3 places. She showed a hell of a lot of determination to even crawl to the finish line.

  • Wow. I need to delete my comments. They don't go where I want them to, and it makes me feel stupid.

  • ouch!

  • over 140,000 viewers?! geez..all the other videos about this have about 3,000..this is getting more attention then alan webb's videos!

  • it's because the girl freakin breaks her leg!

  • but how does everybody hear about this?

  • She was on ESPN.

If you want to see an ESPN article on it, type "Claire Markwardt" in Google.

  • Bravo. Guts personified.

  • that is the heart of a true runner.

  • ha. I love how all these people are from berkshire.

    Alyssa, Dan, (I know you)

  • toughest runner by far!!!!! great job Claire Markwardt. what a gutsy finshish!!

  • What a trooper! Such a freak accident to happen and what a will to finish the race. Hope she gets better! Any news on how she is of what condition she's in?

  • Wow...Balls and Guts! That's all I have to say about that! What a freak accident and what a drive to finish the race! Good for her! Hope she gets better!

  • Truly what people will never understand, its all about finishing what you start. Way to go Claire.

  • CLAIRES FREAKING AWESOME

    i go to berkshire.

[[[to all u haters out there who think cc isnt a real sport and think footballs so tough u all need to die in a hole with a broken fibula and tibula so f u. ]]]

  • to the genius that said football is harder then cross country here ya go:

you said that cross country isn't hard because it last about 16-25 minutes..when if you look at football theres only about 8 minutes of actual game play in football..so if you going on to say which sport is the hardest based on time..footballs a cakewalk.

  • how is there only 8 minutes?

  • That took at lot of courage to finish the race with a broken leg. I do not blame you though, you came so far with all that hard work being a senior. I would finish regardless of what happen too. If only the OHSAA gave courage awards, you would get it for sure. GET WELL SOON

  • Thats sad that she has to go out on the race she broke her leg in, will she be running in college? i mean if she is a top 50 runner as i suspect then i would think she could get a scholarship somewhere?

  • yes she is a senior in high school so she is 17/18 yrs old my cousin ran with her and u can see her in front of her

  • she is a senior!

  • Wow, being a runner from Indiana, Peru, I have to say this is one of the most Gutsy things i've ever seen, she has more inner strength then i've seen in a long time. I have a lot of respect for her. Does anyone know what grade she is in?

  • she is a senior in high school so she is either 17 yrs old or 18. my cousin who is on the same team with her you see her pass her and look at her as she needs to help her out so i heard all about it from my cousin.

  • maybe if she drank some milk her bones wouldn't break so easily

  • And to totalpackage, your a dick. You were probly a football player who was on 3rd string jv all of high school and thought you were tough shit cause you're a big bad football player who later droped out cause you knew you would never amout to anything.

  • Wow! Im a CC for black river high school, and this is one of the worst thing I have ever seen. Its always scary watching a fellow runner go down, know them or not, you know that could be you one day. I saw the ambulance and didn't even think about an injury, I just thought it was an asthmah attack or something. Clare is a hero to me, and yes im a guy, I would never be able to push myself across the finsh with a broken leg. Clare I give you props.

  • xc is the hardest sport there is by far for every1 who thinks other sports are harder i would like to see you all go run a 3.1 mile race is see how u like it

  • hell yeah xc is a tough spor...this is my first year running sophmore i ran trained for 2 weeks before my first race and my time was 23:21 and my best time of the season is 18:12 now im training really hard i really dont like sprints so for indor track i will mostlikely do 1 and 2 mile races but now im running 9 miles every day except sunday i only run 6 miles next year i will hopefully make it to the state championship

  • Sounds like someone didn't put all his effort into his running performance.

  • Sorry 'bout that. That was meant for the football player who didn't find that running was draining.

  • Sounds like youre a gay!

  • i ran with claire 2, she has more guts then all off you saying she does not have guts. lets see u run until u break your leg

  • Well TotalPackage8; your a total package of shit yourself. Have you ever run, or done anything productive in your life? How exactly would you know what determination is? I'm sure you have determination to lead an illustrious career in burger flipping--but what does it really mean? Until you find out, keep your clueless mouth shut.

  • For all of the negative/inappropriate comments out there, I would like to say that Claire has more strength and character than any of you will probably ever manage to have in your wasteful lives. I run Cross Country with Claire, and I beg to differ that it does not contain the same physical pain as any other sport; if anything it, includes more. Claire has something that all of you don't.

  • i like food...

  • I've played footbal in high school and ran track in college. Getting the wind knocked out of me, bruised, cut,or headache was nothing compared running a race in severe oxygen debt, about to collapse, barely able to breathe, heart exploding in your chest. This girl is tough, determined, and highly competitive, and a great teamate to think to crawl to the finish the way she did.She deserves major respect!

  • that girl at a min 39 broke both her legs TWICE

  • Congrats on the season Lady Tigers!

  • i run for berkshire, and hey jhett10 and ooben1, i bet you cant even run 3 miles so shut the hell up. i know claire in person and she probly could still run faster theb both of you with a broken leg, cuz i bet both of you are really fat, so shut the hell up

  • hey jhett10, i run cross country and i believe its a sport, so if u are ever around where i live, come bye ill show u how to run 3 miles. but oh wait u are probly a fat piece of shit that cant even walk a mile.

    so shut the hell up

  • its a whole hell of a lot harder than football or baseball

  • Being a teamate of Ganim19 and Claire, I must agree when he says you are probably an unathletic waste of life living in your mother's attic, with no definition of what a real sport really is. In fact, you probably do not play any sport; your comment is just hypocracy. If you have the time to make immature comments about videos you do not even understand, I must tell you "grow up, get a life, and stop being immature for no reason."

  • I ran XC and am not surprised about Claire finish. Just to qualify for state is an accomplishment in it self. We will do anything to cross the finish line. I will love to have someone like her on my XC team.

  • wow some of the responses on here realy make the ppl saying thim look like ass holes i run cc and its a bitch of a sport i would like to see any of the ass's do somthing this hard and thin come down on it....

  • Could you run if you broke a bone in your foot?

  • i was there watching...my team ran in division 1. yea i definately believe you can break your leg running expecially that far into the season! yea for all these people making comments about people collapsing and stuff who DONT run, well how bout u go run a 5k in 18 minutes and see how u feel. and this is the state meet so people probably hauled a** at the beginning of the race and then died. cross country is one of the hardest sports!

  • Hey jackass. Make sure you actually know what you're talking about before you open your mouth. It wasn't just a "sprained knee." It was a broken tibia and fibula. After reading your comments, I would place your age and maturity of that of an eighth grader. Which is kind of sad, especially because you're probably like 35, obese, and out of work. I'm sure you'll come back and say otherwise. I've read forums before. But for the sake of decency, please keep your filth to yourself. Thank you.

  • wow how many miles was that??? i can only run 3 miles lol cross countrry in middle school so yea we train for 3-4 miles.

  • oh my. people need to to shut up! if you dont want to watch it THEN DONT! im a runner and i ran division 1 here and its for us to see us finish!! so shut it! we dont care!

  • I cannot believe some of the sexist comments. This comes from a 73 year old male who spent years of my life in auto racing. Claire,s guts and determination are to be applauded and admired. Go for it Claire I would choose you for my team any time. Those other people know nothing about being competetive.

  • This video was not uploaded because of the young lady breaking her leg, it was posted for all finishers in the state cross country meet. There are other videos for each division. Don't watch the rest of the video if you don't like it and go back to sitting on your couch and playing on your computer, let the real athletes wathc the videos.

  • Wow..Come out of your hole :)

  • Yes tubeking2007 maybe they should not have

taped this race at all then you would not have

any grap about how they taped it and comments

from those like from TotalPackage8 would not have been posted. I admire the determination

you have Clair and I wish you a speedy and

    complete recovery. Your endurance is

    incredible...GOOD LUCK!!

    to be

  • Well tubeking2007, after reading your completely ignorant comment I must inquire about several things. Firstly, is your definition of slow 6:25 pace for 3.1 miles in a state competition race, or would it just be your mentality?? I would welcome your answer as to why you think she was running slow, because I am sure that it would be nonsense. Claire was running in a STATE COMPETITION Cross Country race; in one of the most painful and difficult sports out there.
