@Colabala2 They already put the skin expanders in his back, once placed they could only be left in for a month or they would cause problems. After the month they had to take them out. If they didn't use the extra skin it would have been wasted.

I've even read salary reports of some making pay equal to that of a CEO of a major company which is in the $7-800,000.00 per year range. Even at 376K per year, that's 15K per two weeks and 30,000 plus per month. Easily affordable by this doctor. He could have easily found a way to recieve reimbursment.

Remember he had already once given up on surgeries long before the US doctor had come into the picture and saw that the warts could possibly be treated with immunotherapy. That being said, if his bones were that brittle, the chemotherapy could have had its own complications.

I'm not knocking the people of Indonesia, I am knocking the government and their poor public policies.
I would love to see Indonesia and spend some time there. The people seem very friendly and hard working and loving to their families.

@BusyWatching001 I think that Drs have to try not to get emotionally involved with the patient. It must be so hard for these Drs who see people suffering and yet they know that other countries can offer much more to patients. It would affect me to see such a young man and his hard life. I would have to try to stay uninvolved.
They may also be slightly superstitious...?

These poorer countries are making some progress but sometimes the culture itself can slow down advances.
This is normal but as each new generation learns and becomes adults they bring with them fresh hope and greater understanding of how the world and what medicine really is and how it can help them.
The internet is like a huge brain, but everyone must be able to access it!

Ever since we changes into a for profit system back in the 80s, the cost of care and the access to care have been negatively affected.Stockholders and corporations put dollars ahead of lives and all this wonderful new advances will be available only to those who can afford it. Back to the dark ages. even on medical assistance, many treatments are denied due to cost. Until we the people demand not for profit care, we will put money ahead of American lives.

A young woman, 22 years old, died when she could not afford her insulin form her diabetes. She is not alone. Horror stories abound here in this highly industrialized country. People are dying of disease fro which there are cures, or slowly losing their health, eyesight, limbs, or cancer advancing to incurable stage.

Most Americans, especially younger people or those who have not had to deal with illness or even a short term sickness have no idea how health care functions in the USA. You must be able to pay upfront or have insurance in order to see a doctor. you can go to an emergency room and incur a large bill for something as simple as a cold. A lot of people are doing this nowadays and then skipping out on the bill. when this happens, those with insurance have extra charges added to their bill.

@FlowingDepths No. The warts were too thick for X-ray to penetrate, as seen on this show. Thus it was impossible to determine for certain what was underneath, one of the many risks of the surgical method.

i agree that the surgery was a bad idea after previous experience of having the warts grow back, but they were quite willing to turn to a new treatment method. the american doctor was given a full month but was a no show. i highly doubt that the american would have moved any faster. at least the Indonesians were trying something.

This is a good example of how little progress is made by 3rd world countries in their healthcare policies.
Dede's underlying TB and Hep B were preventable by means of vaccinations which we in the west can easily access for free or cheaply.
Indonesia should hang it's head in shame, it has a lot to learn when it comes to taking care of it's people.

@Lawlessuk They weren't into caring for him. Otherwise they would have thought of the chemotherapy long before. Remember he had already once given up on surgeries long before the US doctor had come into the picture and saw that the warts could possibly be treated with immunotherapy. That being said, if his bones were that brittle, the chemotherapy could have had its own complications.

I remember the story of Southeast Asian kids who lost their limbs due to mine bombs but they were accepted by Korea to get better treatment and to get new pair of fake legs. I wonder why Indonesia didn't sent Dede to America so he can get better treatment like Korea did(probably the cost?)
