  • "You win, you got the stick!"

  • @johnnytheboy2001 don't you mean insipid?....BTW - no offense - I just think it's funny when people correct others on their spelling and spell something wrong in the meantime :D

  • "You win! You got the stick!" lol

  • I remember when they first came to Brisvegas. I tried three times to get into see them and they would not let me in. They reckoned I was only there to fight, not true unless I needed to defend myself, which is reasonable. So I only got their records.

  • the gang auf gangs....BP on tour = hell on wheels x10!....never seen any one else punch their band mates erwache or piss on them fur passing out 1st...

    RIP TP..RSH

  • "you win, you got the stick"

  • @AmericaRulesYouDrool Hahaha Van Halen, you fucking loser.

  • @manicbabyshambles123 fuck you asshole... joy division? your more a looser than i am

  • @AmericaRulesYouDrool WOOOOH AMERICA YEAH!!!!!!. Joy Division rule you cunt, they were real and Ian Curtis was a literate artist -just like The Birthday Party and Nick Cave were / are - so fuck off back to your fatuous Van Halen videos and whatever other dated cock rock you enjoy and fester like the fucking loser you are, because I'm not the one who seems to have dedicated his youtube site to slagging Austrialian bands off and shouting about how 'America Rules', what a sad life you must lead!

  • @AmericaRulesYouDrool .......And admit it, you've come on here to try to show up Birthday Party fans and to get a reaction, and you've just come across as the moronic prick you obvious are, as you're a fucking Van Halen fan!!!

  • You know, someone sent me this and I had no idea who the band was. I am american for chris'sakes. I thought this goddam guy sounds just like nick Cave. Lo and behold, hahaha! Thanks for posting this. Mighty niiiice.

  • i was at that gig

  • this was the only time i ever went the hacienda

  • @adamnedfan Then you missed the Fall. :/

  • i think any member of the horrors would slap any fan who said they were better than the birthday party

    just sayin..

  • Nick Cave: Powered by Cutty Sark and crystal methamphetamine, with the strength of TEN MEN

  • You win, you got the stick.

  • @jbhf1 pardon?

  • he sings like a drugged musician XD , i like it

  • @sumazaki Perhaps because he was a crazy junkie back then.

  • what the hell the horrors has to do with birthday party??? btw, Birthday Party rules

  • 2:36 - 2:50 is SO GREAT. "SEX VAMPIRE. BITE!" *drum beat* HAHAHA I love it and his hair = sex!!

  • I love The Birthday Party and love The Horrors :). Thanks for the upload.

  • Sex vampire...BITE!!!!

  • this is fucking rad!

  • @TheLaughingLeaves fuck ya dewd

  • @danpolicarpo was that supposed to be "fuck yeah dude" or "fuck you dude" Because if it was the latter, you obviously have no sense of what good music is... And if it was the first one, WOOO!

  • Why are we insulting the Horrors? Leave the Horrors alone, they're one of the best bands currently in existence. The Birthday Party. I like them as well. And I am right to.

  • the Horrors who are they ?

  • why do these little shit heads compare their corporate theft emo rock to anything thats actually genuine?

you need to suffer you empty bitches.

  • @rancidsexbeast

It was all Tony Wilson's fault.

  • Was this before or after Hex Enduction Hour? sounds a lot like it

  • I wish I was old enough to hear this in 1982 but I was not born until 84. Now most of the new music is shit.

  • @rancidsexbeast

I'm not surprised, he's in Manchester.

  • sounds like some sort of guitar-driven late-the doors...

  • The Horrors sound NOTHING like the birthday party anymore. I don't know why they're still getting compared.

  • RELEASE THE BATS!!!!!

    Bring the Batcave back....!!

  • I was at this gig!!!! Sounds shit now but it was a good night.............it was not good going home to Macclesfield....

  • Dude, yeah it may sound shit, but it sounds shit in the best fucking way possible!

  • @123PullOut321

Quite possible one of the best comments ever about TBP :)

  • What a glorious racket they made! Rowland, something of a genius I reckon.

  • I LOVE this song!!!

  • One of the best bands evvvvverrr!

  • R O W L A N D !

  • you win--you got the stick.

    love that

  • They were never goth. This song seems to be taking the piss out of goth bands. Nick used to introduce it saying "This is our least favorite song..."

And it was written for Bauhaus????

  • @cowboystitching There are a great many musicians and bands highly regarded by Goths, whether or not they were ever 'goth'. I don't understand people always wanting to take the piss out of us and our bands. It really makes no sense.

  • @Wolfmammy Yeah, I am a big fan of alot of stuff considered "Goth" even though there's far too much exuberance and life to ever be something so self-professedly drab.

What I should clarify is that they nonsensically use words like "Horror" and "Vampire" in this song, in a really jocular way, when there were quite a few bands singing about those very same subjects in a very serious way. If you look at the rest of the Birthday Party's oeuvre lyrically there's not really anything else like it.

  • Thanks to WRFL for playing a Howard memorial set during my last night driving in Lexington. It fit well with the downtown destruction I forced myself to check out. It'll never be the same, in both aspects.

  • amazing u kept him togther, good job

  • RIP Roland S. Howard

  • its rowland, by the way.

  • Way to spell his name wrong. Otherwise, thumbs up.

  • RIP Roland S. Howard.

  • Cant believe this is on here i actually went to this gig but thought this was in Feb 83 class group !

  • They played in July 82 and Feb 83

  • @WOODSLANE1 they did 2 gigs at the hacienda in Mnachester... I think one of them was in February

  • The Horrors are stupid and have nothing to do with The Birthday Party and just because I pointed out someone's dumb view on "new indie bands" doesn't mean that I take the internet too seriously or that I even give a shit. I was just bored so I projected my opinion out with the rest of the filth, that is all. Thank you.

  • markbootmaker who are u to tell ppl where they can and can't leave comments. theres clearly a discussion taking place here. maybe it s u who needs to think what and where u comment

  • I am the son of god. That's who I am. No one wants to discuss the Horrors. Please take your comments elsewhere or I shall strike you with a lightning bolt.

  • i'm in two minds about the Horrors, i can see the influence of the Nick Cave and the bad seeds/ the birthday party in their earlier stuff. But if uve ever listened to the Chameleons, i think theres a big nod in their direction with the new album, and wonder if thats to do with Tim Burgess' involvement with the Horrors??? Your views??

  • This is The Birthday Party. Please leave your Horrors comments elsewhere. Anywho, very humorous as this was written for Bauhaus.

  • this song was written for bauhaus?

  • Yes. At the time Bauhaus was the ultimate goth band, as well as Joy Division. :)

  • amazing!

  • Jeeeeesus, why is everybody talking about the fucking Horrors? Can people these days not hear and appreciate older music without immediately trying to rationalize it by equating it with some waste of time new indie band? I'm ashamed of my generation.

  • Exactly, thank you. Not to mention the fact that the horrors don't even sound anything like The Birthday Party and, if anything, are responsible for ripping off Nick Cave's fucking HAIRCUT and nothing else. They don't have the grit or gall to make anything that sounds even remotely like this, so just drop it.

  • Why do you perpetuate a small group's opinion about shitty indie bands into the generality of "everyone"? Can people these days not identify idiots without immediately trying to rationalize it by equating it to the majority opinion of "everyone" who is not the person speaking? I'm ashamed that you lump "your generation" into anything. Probably half the fucking people you know listen to at least one old band. Get over it, new shit happens. BP was a "waste of time new indie band" at one point too.

  • @2n2equals5 agreed

  • If you must draw comparisons with surely Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster is a closer fit.

  • you win you got the stick

    haha brilliant

  • Awsome. Just brilliant.

  • Oh shut up about the horrors.

Who the fuck cares about them anyway.

Birthday Party will also dominate over the *cough cough* horrors

  • @markbootmaker What's the horrors?

  • @KingInk80 Look them up.

  • fuck the horrors

    enjoy the birthday party

  • @markbootmaker enjoy both :)

  • @markbootmaker the horrors rule

  • lol at 2:20 ''ÿou win, you got the stick"'

  • I'm not entirely sure what a "horror bat sex vampire coll machine" is but I think I like it, I like it very very much.

  • saw them in london 1979. shot up some horrible junk after the show and nearly died.

  • sex vampire! cool machine!

  • he sounds off his fucking head!

  • kick the fans, yeah!

  • the birthday party is one of the best bands ive ever heard n my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • release the bats kicked ass live, you had to hear it, the sound was perfect

  • 100000 vampire sex bat bite!

  • For some reason they get me laugh. xD The music is pretty interesting.

  • Wow. Cool

  • Release the bats!

  • horror pops totally ripped them off

  • A scornful performance indeed, with the guitar scraping through all kinds of bloody angles and Cave in final judgment of all.

  • But where's Tracy? In jail, I'm guessing?

  • perhaps it's my read: the lyrics to this song seem like they may be a confused drug-induced vamp on gothic culture, which like most music institutions (punk/industrial/metal/mod etc.) is primarely about style......of course, back in the 80s the words just seemed absurd and meaninlgess...and perhaps they are.

  • I love them so I do. Great song from an absolutely genious band.

  • im enamoured by this band.....they started out as fairly normal and upbeat...then got weirder and arty and upbeat.....then came the trashcans and they created their own junkyard style, appealing to goths, which seemed very frustrating for them: this song exemplifies this perfectly -- if any goths got through this then nick cave should be saluted..pure genius......authenticity in motion, with all the blood, guts and fierceness intact...always loved this band, and far more than what followed it.

  • Do they not like goths?

  • perhaps it's my read: the lyrics to this song seem like they may be a confused drug-induced vamp on gothic culture, which like most music institutions (punk/industrial/metal/mod etc.) is primarely about style......of course, back in the 80s the words just seemed absurd and meaninlgess...and perhaps they are.

  • from what i've heard they didn't like being labeled as goths.

  • no goth band did

  • true

  • Define intense...

  • this has got to make my christmas company party soundtrack for sure. Boss, uh,could you turn it down? Huh, oh jeez, wrong holiday sir, no, the volume is up in the satellite sysyem somewhere. merryxmas!

  • "we'll just push on through with a hole bunch of ciggerettes, whiskey stained collars and cuffs.."? what birthday party song was that? please help

  • deep in the woods

  • @trazeebarb It's "Bully Bones", which predates their first album. There's a KILLER live version of it on Live '81-'83.

  • thanks

  • "My brain tricked my hands to believe they're strong"

lol alrighty. Great song, great band.

  • You went and you got the stick!

  • Bad Seeds > Birthday Party

  • is this the Christchurch NZ bats?

  • LOL definitely not, it's The Birthday Party, Nick Cave's first band.

The Bats are much less scary than this.

  • Second band. ;) Boys Next Door.

  • without this, no Horrors!

  • The Horrors aren't even worth listening to anymore....

Now they're just ripping off Joy Division's sound instead of The Cramps and The Birthday Party

  • I can't remember which song the Horrors did this in, but they stole the pronunciation of the word "SHAAAIK" from 6" Gold Blade in the same sort of context. It just shows how much they ripped. I still listen to them but I'm fully aware of who they're ripping off.

  • yeah, same.I liked their last album, but their new stuff.....boring.

  • i thought The Horrors sounded more like The Jesus and Mary Chain now.

  • huh? ummm ok

  • "You went and you got the stick"

    I lol'd.

  • haha me too

  • I thought it was, "you win, you got the stick.", and then they threw it back onstage? either way, hilarious.

  • I love the performance! Nick the Stripper is on the prowl RAWR bite! Rock on!

  • Fantastic. Many thanks for posting.

  • Release the bats Niiiiiick!!!!!yeah!

  • i just realised...

the horrors completely ripped off birthday party. the voice, the clothes.... everything.

oh well. theyre both good =)

  • great quality- THANKS :)

  • Thanks for putting this one up. I had this on VHS until I lent it to someone and never got it back.

  • I'm pretty sure the Haçienda opened in 82 and I went to a Birthday Party gig there in Feb or March 83, possibly this gig.

  • It opened on Friday, May 21st 1982.

BP played Julyy 02, 1982. Filmed songs released on "Pleasure Heads Must Burn" video, 1983.

  • Now available on DVD.

Buy it... go on... you know you want to...

  • They also played on Feb 24th of 83.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhrgfhhhh

  • Pure amphetamine-soaked insanity. All hail the PAAARTY. :D

  • I doubt this is from the Hacienda-I don't think it opened until 1983 when BP had split up.

  • The Birthday Party did indeed play the Hacienda....twice to my knowledge. I'm not sure when the Hacienda opened but the Party played there in 1982 and 1983.

I saw them once...at Leeds Poly, 1982. The greatest gig I've ever been to.

  • god jealousss i wish they played leeds noww HA

  • my idol

    He is so cool.

oh, and 80's post punk was unbelievable

  • Totally Fucking brilliant!!!

Nick Cave excels at everything he does!!

Everyone join my Nick Cave appreciation society on face book, Do it now!!

  • AAAAA voor papshoft

  • hilarius! love nick's voice

  • that was amazing!

  • Nice version.....

  • I have this on vinyl: "It's Still Living." It's an absolutely brilliant recording. Thanks for posting this!

  • cool

  • "You win, you got the stick" Electric!

  • soo good

  • yeah i see the huge similarities between Nick Cave and Faris Rotter's stage antics. :]

  • i don't know if i am the only one, but nick cave is one of the few people i'd allow to kick me in the bollocks.

  • 'You win, you got the stick!'

Nice video, you can really see their influence in London music nowadays.

  • Good performance of one of their best tracks.

  • i don't know man, it's a great song, but it's just one of their most accessable songs. i really is an amazing song though.

  • I love Nick Cave, I also enjoy The Horrors, I met The Horrors and asked Faris about this and he admited ripping off Nick Cave's moves and was cool about it, The Horrors are kind of orginal, but nowhere near as orginal or awesome as The Birthday Party.

  • Okay, you met The Horrors? lucky.... and yeah I agree, the Birthday Party is more original, but I love the Horrors too

  • Yeah, it's kind of like it's almost impossible not to absorb something if you love it so much. Kind of like all the horrors fans and their antics in relation to listening to the horrors.

  • That's right, you can't really find a orginal musican, everyone's infulenced by something.

  • But The horrors isnt just influenced by this. Never to forget they are not BP copycats. They were inspired by the most music. And sure thing Rotter is inspired. But not a big fat copy. Listen to how he sings (more important than moves) . Bands always get influence. And its good that some artists gets their influence from a good band?

  • yeah the horrors are very cool.

i don't think they copy anything really.

but it is true that it's heavily inspired.

it's just that some bands aren't original at all and just copy something that's already been done, and even if they do it better it's bullshit if it's not their own idea...

but the birthday party AND the horrors are great bands.

  • Everything has been done. No one is going to re-invent the wheel in music. Modernist music is over, we are in postmodernism. All bands use influnces to make new innovative music. you have to be living in a deserted island if you claim you have started something "brand new" and "original".

  • Jeez, just kill yourself now already.

  • That's kind of funny figuring how much of an island austulia is.

  • ive been a huge cave fan for ages yet this is first time ive listnened to the birthday party its awesome its pretty uneasy listning which i like but its good

  • Holy Jesus fuck, this rocks. I like this one more than the recorded version.

  • I was lucky enough to have been there :O)

  • yeah but... actualy... wasn't it worth to be lucky enough to be there three or four years later?.. ;)
