  • MymusicTitsandAss

    Get your own hobbies..Nigger

  • @360Alexrules08 Cadets took high drums.

  • It's almost comical how tall that tenor player is... hah.

One of my favorite drum features to date.

  • Bring back high stepping!

  • This was the my first year at the Worlds, was a pleasure to be a part of that music.

  • Wow, I didn't know anyone used two spocks this far back. The more you know...

  • First year the "flam" heads were used. SCV 87 was the first line to use them. Man it's cool to see how far drum heads have come.

  • still sounds great

  • this is the show that got me to love drum corps

  • watch the bassist in the background during the back-sticking part...What an amazing piece of intense musicality this show was...

  • I actually watched some rehearsal viseos of this solo and didn't realize how many notes they actually played...Love those hats !!!

  • What a tasteful solo ! Sometimes its not always how many notes you play.

  • That pit/drumline kicked ass!! What a great year for dci. Some of my favorite shows... (Cavie Alum 90-92)

  • That may be Ralphs book that year, but that drum solo is a throw back tribute to the 70's solo done by the great Fred Sanford. You should check out those old vids for some fun drumming. RIP Fred

  • kiick ass bass line

  • 6 tenors jeez

  • I still say SCV was robbed this season of a title. I will most likely go to my GRAVE saying it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

any footage of the rest of this show? Its still one of the best I've seen. period.

  • @BCSD41988 Nuts!

  • fuck that clean.....

  • is this the only year SCV had sextets?

  • yea i just noticed. the tenor on the outside looks hella small in comparison to the rest lol

  • I know it's probably blasphemous, but I think I enjoyed this show more than Phantom of the Opera.

  • Wow... this still gives me goosebumps after all these years... those split sixtuplets are insane.

  • are you talking about the dotted rhythms? like scottish notation?

  • ha! that's us.

  • Yes Sir!

  • this line is sick. ralph hardimon is writing if i remember correctly. got to teach with him a few years back, and he was just the nicest, most down to earth guy who absolutely exuded the love for music. my friends and i would watch this over and over. had a chance to march with scv in 96 but was marching wgi indoor percussion already and couldn't leave the line in a lurch (especially cuz i was the drum captain). oh, what might have been..... much respect to all d&b corps members, vets and fans!

  • Actually, I think this was an Allan Kristensen book (his last year teaching with SCV). Allan then instructed in the Clovis Unified District for several years and is now a DCI Percussion judge at most Championships.

Forget Phantom of the Opera. This book ruled from end to end!

  • Actually, it was a Ralph Hardimon book. And AK does not judge any more. I believe he is now the DCI percussion caption head.

  • That was Ralph's book. Allan was the snare tech until the end of first tour.

  • I competed against SCV all summer that year. It was an honor. And a thrill to watch that drum line all summer

  • Nope... I marched 88 &89 back in the days. Before I marched those years I was so into wanting to learn how to play that solo cuz it was sooooo cool. Cuz of that solo I worked my azz off to try out for the line the following year. Yeah after I played that lick those H.S. kids were probably like, " how in the heck did this old dude know how to play like that?" lol.

  • did you march with joe segovia?

  • BEST DRUM SOLO EVER!Over the weekend these H.S. kids were in the parking lot of Home Depot decorating their drums with Xmas lights (WTF?)& i couldn't help but get excited & ask them what they were doing after they were peckin' on their drums. They handed me sticks & I played that back stickin'lick SCV's snares played & they were like "WTF???" & was speechless. LOL! all I said was, "SCV 87.. find it on YouTube." LOL! (Yeah..the dude at the end.. Joe.. don't know when & how he lost his hat?) lol!

  • i take it your not in high school.lol

but yeah thats pretty funny. if i had the sheet music for this i cud prolly be able to play it 2. B-)

  • best drum break ever!!

    and at 0:47 SOOO TASTY!!!

  • Oh man, I remember this well. I was a freshman in highschool. This was like totally in vogue back in them days. Great memories.

  • How come more ppl dnt watch this one huh?!!!!!!!!!!! i cant stop watchn this.

  • This percussion feature is insane!!!!!!!! mallets and drums!!!!!

  • my rookie year as a bari player..what a rush finals was..i do not even remember the show, just marching off the field is all I remember and it was really bright....right on Ol' School for this and da rest...this was the last year the horn line won high brass.....almost in 89'....RG

  • HAHA THAT'S MY BRO ON 2ND BASS!!

  • CORNBREAD!!!!!!!

  • yeah man! Thats him! Im his youngest brother!

  • This drum feature inspired me to join drum corps; seriously!

  • My name is Sean and this was my age-out year with the Vanguard...I am the third snare from the left (tall white dude)...This will always be a memory I cherish my entire life...Yes, we didn't 'win' when you look at the score, but ask any of us who marched that year, and we will tell you who the true winners were that night...

  • Heh....right nest to Lee Rudnicki! You guys were SO lucky the dude at the end had dark hair....I never knew he lost the hat for years!

My fave SCV show....Russian Xmas Music was spectacular, and Great Gate gives me chills every time.

Now if only that upper horn hadn't blown those 2 notes so flat...

I know the pain of losing to Garfield by 1/10th, tho (84 BD alum here)

  • NEED-HAM SMILEY!!!!!!

  • In my eyes, Les Ghinka will remain as the single greatest percussion feature ever written.

    Ralph Hardimon's masterpiece is timeless.

'87 Vanguard is one of the greatest lines to ever take the field.

  • Lezghinka!

  • You're right....Lezghinka! My bad!

    VANGUAAAAAARD!

  • @ross102591 Totally agree. Ralph is also the coolest guy in DCI. SCV also had the tallest guy to ever play tenors in 87'

  • @ross102591 agreed

  • @ross102591 thats "LEZGYNKA"; not Les Ghinka .. take it from a proud Chechen ;)

  • @ross102591 I'm pretty sure Fred Sanford wrote this originally for the 1978 and 1979 SCV lines.

  • @ScottyNeutron yep, you are correct, it was Fred

  • I really think the 80s was a good decade of drum corps, even though I was born in 1987. But seeing the way drum corps evolved and got more competitive, any of these shows are winners.

Even this one. Just a single tenth of a point.

  • "The epitome of a drum corps performance." - Gail Royer

And he was so right - 87 SCV finale is one of the "throw the baby on the field" moments, ever.

  • Agreed

  • Its a shame the 1987 SCV have never got the recognition they deserve for the show they put on that night. This was one of the most well perfomed show ever. I remember going against those guys that night. It was simply perfection.

  • There was a little bit of intonation problems in the horn line, but besides that, you're right man. One of the best shows ever.
