That may be Ralphs book that year, but that drum solo is a throw back tribute to the 70's solo done by the great Fred Sanford. You should check out those old vids for some fun drumming. RIP Fred
this line is sick. ralph hardimon is writing if i remember correctly. got to teach with him a few years back, and he was just the nicest, most down to earth guy who absolutely exuded the love for music. my friends and i would watch this over and over. had a chance to march with scv in 96 but was marching wgi indoor percussion already and couldn't leave the line in a lurch (especially cuz i was the drum captain). oh, what might have been..... much respect to all d&b corps members, vets and fans!
Actually, I think this was an Allan Kristensen book (his last year teaching with SCV). Allan then instructed in the Clovis Unified District for several years and is now a DCI Percussion judge at most Championships.
Forget Phantom of the Opera. This book ruled from end to end!
Nope... I marched 88 &89 back in the days. Before I marched those years I was so into wanting to learn how to play that solo cuz it was sooooo cool. Cuz of that solo I worked my azz off to try out for the line the following year. Yeah after I played that lick those H.S. kids were probably like, " how in the heck did this old dude know how to play like that?" lol.
BEST DRUM SOLO EVER!Over the weekend these H.S. kids were in the parking lot of Home Depot decorating their drums with Xmas lights (WTF?)& i couldn't help but get excited & ask them what they were doing after they were peckin' on their drums. They handed me sticks & I played that back stickin'lick SCV's snares played & they were like "WTF???" & was speechless. LOL! all I said was, "SCV 87.. find it on YouTube." LOL! (Yeah..the dude at the end.. Joe.. don't know when & how he lost his hat?) lol!
my rookie year as a bari player..what a rush finals was..i do not even remember the show, just marching off the field is all I remember and it was really bright....right on Ol' School for this and da rest...this was the last year the horn line won high brass.....almost in 89'....RG
My name is Sean and this was my age-out year with the Vanguard...I am the third snare from the left (tall white dude)...This will always be a memory I cherish my entire life...Yes, we didn't 'win' when you look at the score, but ask any of us who marched that year, and we will tell you who the true winners were that night...
I really think the 80s was a good decade of drum corps, even though I was born in 1987. But seeing the way drum corps evolved and got more competitive, any of these shows are winners.
Its a shame the 1987 SCV have never got the recognition they deserve for the show they put on that night. This was one of the most well perfomed show ever. I remember going against those guys that night. It was simply perfection.

First year the "flam" heads were used. SCV 87 was the first line to use them. Man it's cool to see how far drum heads have come.

My fave SCV show....Russian Xmas Music was spectacular, and Great Gate gives me chills every time.
Now if only that upper horn hadn't blown those 2 notes so flat...

In my eyes, Les Ghinka will remain as the single greatest percussion feature ever written.
Ralph Hardimon's masterpiece is timeless.

There was a little bit of intonation problems in the horn line, but besides that, you're right man. One of the best shows ever.
