eternos, inoxidables, nunca habrá otra banda así, fresca, hipnótica, cautivande, combativa, dulce , no sé que más, es U2, gracias por existir muchachos y por darnos tantas alegrías
That's the smallest stage that I've ever seen and with such a small crowd. I went to their concert in Soldier Field two months ago and it was packed. Soldier Field is a big place and the stage was huge.
I first heard this in 84. Brings me back to Freshman year of college. Of course I haven't forgot U2 over the years, enjoying songs old & new...however I forgot this one. Better get October so I don't forget this song again!!
wow, this is awesome! They all look so young, my brother was probably there, he has been following U2 since the very start... I saw them in the early 80's in Belfast for the 1st time, good memories... going to see them in NY next week! :)
@jgme71 Aww that must have been amazing seeing them back then! I'm only 13 so I couldn't see them back then obviously but I bet it would have been to see them then. I lucked out and found tickets to their St.Louis, Missouri 360 concert and me and my dad got right in the front GA row in between The Edge and Bono, it was the most amazing thing that ever happened to me in my life!
Boy Tour » Leg 2 - Amérique Du Nord + Europe 1981 - 01 - 22 01 - The Ocean 02 - 11 O'Clock Tick Tock 03 - An Cat Dubh 04 - Into The Heart 05 - Another Time, Another Place 06 - The Cry -> The Electric Co. 07 - I Will Follow 08 - A Day Without Me 09 - Out Of Control ;o)
Great vid, and thx very much for posting. I saw them the same year (I think)at the Lyceum Ballroom when "Boy" was released. Does anyone know if there's any footage of that? It was the first time they headlined in London. They did three ancours and Bono dedicated the last one to the hundreds that were still standing outside listening.
Great concert footage; Bono, and I think Edge, are like 21 here.. that would be the age of your average U.S. college senior, ready to graduate... great energy - I'm wondering what is Bono referring to at the end when he says 'good luck to..." Was a Belfast-based soccer team going to play a tournament match the following day?
@cozener1 sorry, you're a bit off. they didn't play SBS for almost 2 more years. This show was in January 1981 at McMordie Hall at Queen's University. They debuted SBS in December 1982 in Glasgow. Perhaps you are thinking of the performance later in December 1982 back in Belfast....it's the show where Bono told the audience that they won't play the song again in Belfast if the fans don't like it...and of course they love it.
They were so much better when they were younger. I just can't listen to anything post Joshua Tree. I'm sure they've got great fun lives and everything, and good for them, but...
At the end when Bono says " Good luck tomorrow jake", he was referring to Jake Burn of Stiff Little Fingers, two absolutely amazing bands. Anyone that seen U2 and SLF on those nights were very lucky, the two best bands this island has produced!
i love that bono forgets the words in the first verse, squaks the mic, falls all over, and gets mauled...reminds me that they're still human and still have legit beginnings!
this was as punk as u2 got and i much prefer this era of their music but in order for them to survive they had to change which is bad in sumways but for them it was good coz they wanted to changed music but this is fantastic plenty of energy as punk as they where which is great
Wow - awesome video! You can see Bono working the crowd even then - pull the crowd in, hold it and then let it go. He is a master at that. I didn't see them until the JT tour so never had the opportunity to watch them in smaller venue, much less a club venue like this. Thanks for posting!
This is U2's first tour - they played Northampton (Nene College) Jan 29 1981 - tickets cost £2 and Out of Control was the final song from the set list that night
now i remember why u2 were the best live band in the world.
i remember seeing them at tiffanys in glasgow in 1982 i was 15 at the time got sneaked in by my older mates been hooked ever since but i must admit they have never been the same since joshua tree.
Paul McGuiness hooked up with these guys when they could barely play their instruments, and knew in his heart they were going to be the biggest band in the world. Good call.
@bfall66 U2 could already play when they met McGuiness. They'd already won a contest among accomplished bands with the opportunity of a recording contract back in 1978.
@capitalsho Look deep into the "Get On Your Boots" lyrics and think about our current 'dark' days, you'll see why it's actually a great song; still far from being the best on the album, though. And yet, instead of having this kind of attitude, better thank these people for 30 years of delivering on the best music in history and uplifting millions with it.
Great vid. Props to Paul for posting it. U2 was really great back then. Heck, they're still pretty great, but back then, they were like a revelation and they had so much energy. U2's first four albums are still my favorites. That said, I like the new direction they have been going in more than their 90's stuff. Pretty impressive career arc, IMO.
Bono looks toasted for sure....you could already see that they were on the verge of greatness even in these early clips. It's great to see that in a historical context now.
After 25 years of watching U2 videos this is d first time that i see Bono performing under the influence, just look at his eyes, is he just drunk?? lol does anybody remember when in an award show Phil Collins tried to do a quick interview with them n Bono n edge were drunk in a bar? then Edge said something like drumers are always trying to steal the show fron rest of band reffering to Larry Mullen n of course Phil Collins himself, Phil didn't like the comment
There´s a story Bono himself likes to talk about, it´s about getting heavily drunk every time he met Frank Sinatra... but going back to music, I just love "Out of Control".
The Edge's voice nowadays is GREAT. I wish he would have sang a song on No Line on the Horizon, I was expecting that before the abum was released haha. Would have been awesome.
This is how I remember them when I was a 16 year old fanatical fan. First concert 1982 in the RDS Dublin, last one Monday 27th July 2009 in Croker Park. Still awesome. Well done lads.xx Aideen xx
This was the year I first saw them, in NY, at the Ritz club. I knew that they were going to be huge. It was very obvious how much talent and stage presence they had, even back then.
Good seeing this. At this stage of their careers Adam Clayton was the seasoned "muso" of the band. The rest of them, particularly Larry Mullen, werent even sure of their own abilities!
hmm no, when they got the band together in 1976 Larry was the most experienced at his instrument The edge was a beginning guitar player but knew music having played piano, Bono said he played guitar but really didn't and Adam had a bass and said he could play it but barely could. 1981, 5 years later i'd say in terms of technical skills Adam likely had the least. Not to say he didnt have good basslines, cause he did. I'm just saying what you're saying is misinformed.
i was there. had a chat with the lead singer who said we could help ourselves to beer and sandwiches. he was very friendly and chatty. i had no idea then he would go on to become Bono son of God. But theyre still a great band.
When Bono says "goodnight, good luck tomorrow Jake" he's referring to Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers because they were playing the night after U2.
It might not matter to you , but when you say "rest of us" it is a smaller group than the people who Achtung Baby mattered to, the people who have enjoyed watching them grow and explore new sounds instead of making the same album over and over again.
In their book U2 By U2 they talk of enjoying the drink quite a bit. I doubt Bono was under a drug influence. I seem to remember having that look back in my younger days!
no words for such beauty.

I just had the same disagreement with
someone about Chris Cornell's new stuff.
It looks like the same thing.
People who get uncomfortable when
their fav bands/artists grow, evovle,
experiment and how 'they' just want them to remain in their original packaging.
BOR~ing!
'Zoorapa' gets ripped but,
it's one of my favs by my fav group. 8D
