  • And Alice Faye was Archie Bunker's favorite actress.

  • Everyone here knows the man, actor Jack Haley, played the "Tin Man" in the Wizard of Oz, right?

  • Bill Robinson," Uncle Billy" as she called him, taught her how to tap dance. He was in a few of her movies.

  • omfg the first 3 seconds made me die laughing. ahahahaha

  • Stupendous! She was truly a generously gifted child, in so many ways.

  • The lady in blue is Rose from "The Titanic".

  • tap dancing on the radio. :)

  • the last movie she did as a child actress was when she was 12. she went to high school and they asked her if she wanted to keep acting when she was older. She said yes and retired from acting until she was like 23.

  • Were those little pop rifles real and did they really make that popping noise?

  • Her last movie was when she was 12....The movie company just up and said "sorry we cannot do any more...could you please leave." That is so sad!! ); *cry*

  • @MezzieB21 Absolute nonsense !

She was born in 1928 and still making movies in the late 1940's as a young woman. It would take you about 30 seconds to check this out on the internet .

  • She was 8 when she did this! When I was 8, I couldn't even tie a bow!

  • she is sooo good...there hasnt been a kid this talented since her.

  • The first time I watched this I was watching Shirley. The other dozen or so times I've watched it I've been watching Jack Haley =)

  • It was amazing how she learned and executed such a complicated number!!!!

  • TIME BANDIT(S)

  • NOW THIS IS THE "REAL" HAPPY FEET MOVIE CANT NO DAMN PENGUIN DO THIS ISH IN REAL LIFE!!!!! LOL

  • Just saw a documentary with Alice Faye. She commented on this dance and said she felt it was one of her more challenging dances and that Shirley kept up with her and Jack Haley. This was always my favourite growing up (B&W, of course). Whenever I look at the six on dice I think of this dance and call them my little soldiers. Don't know why but it's been that way for the past 45 years.

  • It's been YEARS since I've seen this!!!! I smiled SO hard it hurt!!!!!

  • i really wish i could figure out the choreography for this routine :\

  • I like how she keeps up with those steps!

  • Dear "stuckinafishbowl" and "Nevilen1": It's called TALENT.... 100% pure talent. Lots of people think they have it, but a select few are actually born with it. This is one of the GREATEST tap/dance routines ever recorded on film, and we're fortunate that it's be captured for generation after generation to enjoy!!! So ENJOY!

  • I love a military man.

    I love a military man.

    I love a military....nurse

    LOL

  • Shirley said in her bio, of her Fox audition something like "What mother didn't even know, what nobody knew, is how much I loved to dance...." :) It shows!

  • It is incredible what for an amazing body control she had in her young age. I suppose that she could every choreography they have shown her perfectly.

  • I love ALL Shirley Temple movies--but this is my absolute favorite. I think Jack Haley is so funny, and I wish he had made more movies. The whole cast is just great, and the musical numbers can't be beat.

  • @1laughinggravy

Yeah...I love this movie, too. I'm not a big Shirley fan, but I can't resist this movie. This dance number is incredible. I wish "Poor Little Rich Girl" was on DVD!

  • The old white guy at 1:20......LMFAO!!!

1:49 to 3:04..........ONE FREAKING TAKE!! You can't edit this!! THEY KILLED IT!!!!!

Somebody grab the craptacular talent of today and see it they can match or be better than this.........yeah I didn't think so!!!

    Amazing!!!!!

  • she is happy and cheerful and not scart at all she is soooooooooo adorable little girl

  • Jack Haley is so smexy in this :D hehehehehe

  • VERY few edits!!! From 2:00 to 3:06? It was done in ONE take and that is where it got the most difficult. It gave me the chills. These were not all easy tap steps, either.

  • Real talent. Not like today!!

  • Fox who was one step away from bankruptcy and turned away a Fifty thousand dollar bid for shirley's contract with the quote this kid actor is gonna be worth a hole lot more then 50 grand.

  • shirley temple i watch this movie about all the time but i don't watch it all time black man in here was good tap dancer back in the black and white was aright

  • One of my childhood favorites!

  • How many so-called child stars of today can dance like that? You have to love Shirley!

  • Not only was she a little one doing all those dance steps, she was keeping up with Jack Haley and Alice Faye. She was such a talented little girl!

  • Was this song written for this movie? I'm trying to find the song online. The whole song that's sung after their intro. Does anyone know?

  • @Laceygal123 The song "Military Man" was written for the movie "Poor Little Rich Girl". Words and music by Mack Gordon and Harry Revel, c.1936. You can find copies on e-bay once in a while.

  • Shirley Temple was a natural. Watch her dance, it is like second nature to her. What a talented child she was.

  • She was amazing I used to watch all of her movies. The dancing in this clip shows how talented she was.

  • amazing how that little girl can keep up with step

  • @stuckinafishbowl yeah, that was her genius! :)

  • "I love a military... nurse!"

    xD

  • teehee!

  • so talented!!

  • This was my favorite of all her routines.

  • She's so tiny.

  • I loooove this routine!

  • Love the routine, but it doesn't make much sense that a radio show would feature a lengthy tap dancing act. If this were TV, that would be different. Nobody at home would appreciate the appeal of this act all devoted to taps.

But we have to accept all these things because--well, this is Hollywood. Reality never interfered with the plot of a Shirley Temple movie!

  • some old radio shows had audiences

  • I know that, but I'm talking about putting on a big production number when most people couldn't even see it. Not until past the mid-'40s did TV start becoming available. But I did love the number.

  • I love old movies and know a lot about them and I do believe that they had a routine because when they did some radio shows, they also had an audience at the same time.

  • A lot of the variety hour radio shows had live audiences. My grandmother (born in 1906) told me many times how much she loved the tap routines on the radio. The tapping was the reason those routines were on the radio, b/c they could heard and appreciated for their intricacy just by their sound.

  • But why would a radio program go to the expense of putting on a big production number when only the live audience would see it. This would make more sense if we're talking about a TV show, but come on, radio was a whole different medium. This was a Hollywood movie from the '30s--and that in itself explains everything!

  • First of all, some radio programs were done in costume. Second, this is a MOVIE, so artistic license is necessary.

Movies never have been true depictions of reality, even more so today.

  • In SPAIN those movies are available in DVD ..but no COLOR.....n we love electronic COLOR but almost ALL criticism is against it....dont know WHY

  • there is a special beauty with the movies made in black and white. :)

  • This is one of my favorite numbers. Shirley holding her on with two greats like Jack Haley and Alice Faye. After this was filmed they had to redance the routine to pick up the sound of their taps on the floor. Alice said Shirley did it with ease as she and Jack struggled to get it right. Shirley was and is a great Star.

  • whats this song called?? can anyone tell me if its on itunes!??!?

  • who is she dancing with?

  • She's dancing with Alice Faye and Jack Haley (Tin Man)

  • thats soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tight!!! lol

  • great tune, wonderful tap routine

  • Alice Faye said she really wasn't that familiar with Shirley Temple when she was cast in this movie. She wasn't thrilled with being in a movie with some kid and couldn't understand how they expected someone so young to learn such an intricate routine. Shirley not only was a delight to work with, but breezed through this number. Faye said Shirley was the greatest natural talent she ever knew. Her mother would sit to the side and say "Sparkle, Shirley!".

  • omg shirley's mother would ALWAYs say, "Sparke Shirley, sparkle!" it is so cute.

  • Are any of the older people in this shirley temple movie still alive?

  • i don´t think so

  • i certainly hope so! :)

  • oh, i´m sorry, of course: Gloria Stuart (Titanic star)

  • shirley temple! but shes 81

  • This is my fav Shirley tap dance number of all her movies :-)

  • just one word describes Shirley ~ AMAZING!!

  • oh my goodness! consider the difficulty...such a long and hard choreo and a 8 years old little girl does it! just perfekt! so: Stand up and cheer:D

  • I'm sure you guys must know that the pretty woman in the sound booth is Gloria Stuart was played "Old Rose" in Titantic. She should have gotten the Oscar that year IMO. She was also in Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm with Shirley Temple too.

  • I love this video!

  • awesome

  • Yes I agree ! AWESOME!

  • My most fav tap dance of all the Shirley films

Just a pity they didn't have then the sound quality we have now. Wouldn't it have been awsome??!

  • A great tune from three talented song and

    dance performers..especially the man who

played"The Tin Man"in "The Wizard Of Oz!'.

  • Yeah! He's so talented!

  • And handsome.

  • such a great tap dancing choreo!!!

  • I too heard they had some trouble with this, it was hard to stay in sinc the whole time.

  • I know I'll be seeing~~

    a "MILITARY MAN"

    FANTASTICdanceMILITARYstyleway by

    SHIRLEY, Jack, & Alice' GREATsong36',

    I'd exercise to it too!

  • This was also my favorite of Shirley's tap routines. But reportedly it gave her a lot of trouble as it was too fast and intricate. You'd never think so when you watch this video.

  • I heard actually that Shirley breezed through this routine, while Alice and Jack struggled.

  • Well, whether Shirley did or didn't have trouble, she still was a phenomenal dancer for her age. (She was 8 at the time of this film.)

  • LOL. My favourite dance ever. Best choreography!

    "Drum pumpy tum tum..."
