  • Mayer had a lot to answer for, he damaged so many lives. These two should have always been together and would have been only for this little dictator.

  • @kingcharlesyoung29, care to elaborate on what your great-great grandmother Irene may have told you? :)

  • Umm she was my great great grandmother so i know the hole story behind this

  • I read the book from my library but it was the '94 version. Very interesting read, but had a lot of doubt. Then I bought the '01 version. It is much more convincing because Sharon explains how she got all this information. Still have a bit of doubt tho.

Wish she interviewed Irene Dunne. If Ms. Dunne confirmed these reports then all my doubts would vanish.

  • @Countrygirltori24 :

Sharon Rich did speak very briefly to Irene Dunne on the telephone. When asked if Nelson and Jeanette were in love, Miss Dunne replied "Yes", but refused to give any details because she felt it wasn`t anyone`s business. Irene and Jeanette were close friends for many years- from the time they first met when they performing in musical theatre in New York until Jeanette`s death in 1965. Lorraine

  • @Gemini730 Really? Wow how do you know this? I respect Irene Dunne more for keeping her friend's secret.

  • @Countrygirltori24 :

Sharon Rich mentions it in her book "Sweethearts ".(0 1 version). I don`t believe everything in the book, but from what I know about Irene Dunne, this story rings true. Sharon also writes about an incident involving Nelson Eddy and Gene Raymond which happened during Christmas Week of 1964. Robert Mitchum was a witness and confirmed the story to Sharon. Mitchum was a, blunt honest man and I believe him. Lorraine

  • @Gemini730 Thanks. I have her 01 version so I'm gonna have to check it out. I believe the affair more than I don't believe it. All I need to see is the "This is Your Life" clip if I ever have doubts. Wish I could go back in time and stop both of their marriages so that their relationship could work out (especially his marriage).

  • @Countrygirl:

Yes, the 'This is Your Life" clip is very convincing. Also, some of the songs which Nelson sings on radio. The lyrics and the heartfelt passion-I believe he was thinking about Jeanette. Those songs were a cathartic release of his feelings. Of course "Czaritza" from Maytime"-I just cannot be convinced that Nelson and Jeanette were acting. Lorraine

  • The book is great!

Sharon is right. She has done her homework and has done an excellent job documenting first hand reports. Who knows why people do the things they do in life, love and marriage? Especially while they are in the throws of Hollywood careers, during a time of great poverty for many... When you look at them in their movies, while they are singing, you can see MORE than just words. Turn the sound off and watch their eyes... I NEVER saw that with Gable.

  • Hmm interesting....

  • I've loved Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald since I was a child.

My parents' first date was spent at the movies watching "Naughty Marietta. They were almost, to us, like members of our family. I had a scrapbook of their movies We saw Nelson Eddy perform at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans, he stood 2 ft away and sang "Ah Sweet Mystery...", which my mother had requested. We met Mr. Eddy, and he autographed an album . I wrote to him, he sent me an autographed picture. Still miss them.

  • Why is it so important to people to know the private lives of actors? They are people pretending to be written characters. They promote themselves to get a job and acting is only a job. It's sad that people feel the need to idolize actors. People who speak the words written for them. People who feel they know them personally though their acting. The older I get the more I believe in the old saying, "people will believe what they want to believe." You're arguing over people who pretend.

  • I was intrigued by the concept of the book, and found it a most engaging read. Hearing this interview which was mentioned in "Sweethearts" was truly heart-rending. Thank you for posting.

  • Don't worry people, Nelson was not gay, and so what if he had a love for Jeanette, it just makes their films that much more enjoyable for a large number of viewers! :-)

  • You don't die two years later unless there was something going on as a couple. May they both rest in peace until the lord resurrects them.

  • Their long time love relationship is very true. I knew about the whole thing since I was a child in the early fifties. My mother knew him since the late twenties. I'm so glad maceddy wrote this book. At last the truth is told.

  • @thephantom1946 good for you to come forward. It's about time more people who really knew both stars came forward with the truth of their love affair.

  • @jenelsbelle Thanks, I get sick and tired of people who think they were a couple of saints, as if this could never be possible. Look at Tracy and Hepburn, nobody blinks an eye about them. I knew about this all my life, lucky enough to see/know Nelson. He was definitely NOT gay. And yes, Jeanette didn't get along well at all with Chevalier. He thought he was God's gift to women, as well as being a male prima donna.

  • @thephantom1946 - What's this about Tracy and Hepburn?! She was a lesbian (with Dietrich no less). Tracy was a cover-up. I though everybody knew that!

  • @raythespian You don't get the point. The fact known to the public was T and H were having an affair. It didn't cause shockwaves. Is that easier to understand? I think you have a problem i.e. gays in general, and by the way, Eddy was NOT gay. You have a poor source. Nothing you say will ever change the truth! I personally know this so tell your bad info to maceddy who has loads of documentation which you don't have, that proves otherwise. Go get the book at a library. Finis.

  • @thephantom1946 - Truth Accepted! Nelson Eddy was straight! Case closed!

  • I didn't hear him profess anything about a longtime love affair..or even a short one. I always believed they were just great on screen together and friends off screen.

  • What a nasty little specimen you are LazlosPlane. Nelson Eddy gay...what planet are you on? You Loser....

  • thank you for sending the videu but did yuu realise that before you so rudely called her mandonad that her christian name was jeanette and a more polite lady you could,nt imaginealso take my advice and have your eyes tested if you think hnelson was gay you have real optical trouble he is so all man it iworrying that you can,t see thatelson is real macho you got problems honey with mabbers abd sight..

  • can any one tell me what the reporter says to nelson in thi/s sad video to make react the way he did?

  • MacDonald had just passed away.

  • my comments don,t seem to b e getting on ,i was gratefulk for the video but because i anMdeaf cant hear THE CONVERSATION PLEASE CAN SOME KIND PERSON TYPE OUT THE WORDS OF THIS SAD INTERVEIW FOR MEHOLLY WOOD GRATEST COVER UP.

  • he wasn't gay it was gene raymond ! nelson clearly loved jeanette and it's obvious who jeanette really loved look a the films she has not looked at another co-star the way she has nelson

  • Oh, really? Ever see her look at Maurice Chevalier? Try, "One Hour With You," she looks soooooo in love. She hated him.

    It's called, ACTING!

    What a bunch of losers.

  • @LazlosPlane Actually she does NOT look at Chevalier as if she's in love with him. She looks quite pained. And Chevalier was such a ham, what a terrible actor. I guess people in that era thought he was really something, but he does zero for me!

  • raythespian: "Nelson was gay. ... so wooden close to Jeannette."

They made 8 movies together because of their onscreen chemistry, which I assume means their onscreen love affairs look too real. If a gay man could create such chemistry with a woman, then he's not "wooden". If he's "wooden", meaning he wasn't acting, then he's not gay.

So raythespian, "gay" or "wooden"? Use a little brain cells, if you have them, before you answer.

  • @raythespian

Watch Nelson`s eyes-the adoration and desire when he gazes at Jeanette. The tender way he kisses, holds, and caresses Jeanette`s hands. The long(nine seconds) passionate kiss at the end of "Czaritza" in MAYTIME and the kiss at the end of "Wanting You' in NEW MOON. A Gay Man?-I think not. Lorraine

  • @LazlosPlane what a sad thing you are with your sick and lonely comments

  • @Gemini730 how wonderful tht not only i see this - i love their movies and i am 78 and my 12 year old grandaughtrer loves these movies - his glance at jeanette is worth a thousand words

  • Wrong, wrong! Jeanettes husband was Bi and had affairs with men while married to her! Nelson Eddy had a son named Jon and was never known to be amorous with men!

  • @raythespian I guess your post must be proof then that wisdom doesn't come with age.

Gene Raymond was gay, not Nelson Eddy.

  • @raythespian how sad that you would have your so wrong comments against nelson - amazing what jealousey there has to be - gene raymond was gay and many people often mistakenly took him for nelson but in my eyes i dont see how - and by the way i am 78 - you better do some research before labeling

  • @rmriddle1 - My source is long dead...i.e. my singing teacher ages ago in Philly, where Nelson studied and sang before going to Hollywood. She was the soprano and he was the baritone in a Quartet that performed around town. They remained friends until he died. You see, being gay has long been considered normal by the psychiatric community, and whether Nelson was or wasn't didn't even matter then, much less now!

  • @raythespian I'd like to know what planet you are living on where you say "the psyciatric community has long considered being gay normal!" NOT! Only recently has this been even partially true.

  • @jenelsbelle - So now being gay is considered partially normal. Is that like being partially pregnant? Anyway, who cares what the drug-peddling psychiatrists say?! Various sexual practices have been around for thousands of years, and we're still here, doing our best to destroy the planet.

  • @raythespian You are taking my comment out of context. Not everyone in the psychiatric community was on board with gay being normal all at once. I am sure you will still find some doctors that are hold outs. I believe the prevailing attitude is that yes, it's normal and part of the DNA you're born with. But this was definitely NOT the case even as much as a decade ago. And most certainly NOT the 30s-50s. Speak for yourself, none of my gay and lesbian friends are out to destroy the world.

  • @jenelsbelle - I'm glad to hear that none of your gay and lesbian friends are out to destroy the world. Oh, how you misunderstand! It's the human species in general, especially the moneyed classes, who are wreaking havoc on Mother Earth.

  • @raythespian being a shut in i really want to get into the movie and out of my pain so no i dont care i really dont want to know i hate knowing as i have found trying to watch doris day and rock hudson i knew he was acting and i no longer enjoyed or kept the movies - coming out is for them hurts people like me who love to see love

  • @rmriddle1 - I appreciate your post. You say that after you realized that Rock Hudson was acting, it spoiled the movie. Any actor in any movie or tv show is acting to the degree that his or her ability permits. We really have no idea what goes on behind the masque, nor is it any of our business. Regarding Nelson, there is absolutely no reason not to continue enjoying his movies.

  • @raythespian THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO YOUR LAST REPLY IM VERY HAPPY WATCHING THE OLD MOVIES NOT THIS ALL SEX CONSUMED MOVIES IN AND OUT OF THE PROFESSIONAL LIVES OF THESE ACTORS TODAY - YES I WILL TRY TO KEEP ENJOYING THE NELSON EDDY AND JANETTE MOVIES AS WELL AS I AM IN AMORED OF THE LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME BASED ON RUTH ETTING THANKS FOR YOUR CARING AS I AM NOT ABLE TO GET OUT HARDLY AT ALL AND THIS IS SUCH A BIG PART OF MY BEING IN TOUCH WITH THE OUTSIDE WITH THOSE THAT HAD SOME CLASS

  • @raythespian I have no idea what movies you are watching but NE was FAR from wooden around Jeanette! Have you SEEN them together in "Sweethearts"??? He practically makes love to her at the piano among other places! His lust is so evident it leaps off the screen. Open your eyes. Geez, what's in it for you that you need to claim him as gay in your world?

  • i used to not beileve in this love affair but mmm maybe now i'm starting to........

  • AWW!these two are a nice couple it's a shame they didn't get married!

  • Where's the proof?? she looked really happy with gene

  • they were star-crossed lovers really together only when they could be i need to buy the book

  • When movies were movies - they were the most exciting pairing on the big screen - I discovered them on TV and I continue to play there movies and tapes - As long as there is film this couple well me loved and admired for their performances into enternity.

  • The evidence from those who would know is they loved each but, as life often does, circumstances led to them deciding not to marry and to marry others. Being great worldwide film stars they both felt a responsibility to both their studio and their public to keep a dignified public face, and that they did beautifully start to finish. Jeannette was known as "The Iron Butterly." Beautiful, gracious, talented, she also demanded a say in her career and usually got her way! They were greatly loved.

  • i agree i believe they were lovers and right on there were a great couple!

  • What I never undstood is why would L.B. Mayer want to sabotoge his own players, viz. John Gilbert and Nelson Eddy. If they failed, then HE wold fail (to make money). If he didn't like one of his players, all he had do was fire them. It has been so often stated Mayer took revenge of players he disliked, it's almost a cliché. But makes absolutely no sense, Mayer may have been cruel, but he was not an imbécile?

  • No, he wasn't imbecile, he was merely in love with Jeannette, as much as this selfish man could be... Consequently he persecuted Nelson Eddy.

  • I read Sweethearts before I ever saw a movie by either Nelson or Jeanette. It made me take a look at them and I love them! If nothing else, this book made me a fan forever! But as a rabid genealogist and historian, Sweethearts passes the sniff test for me. It is well documented and has extensive source documentation, not just the anonymous sources. Nelson, Jeanette and Gene come off as decent if sometimes flawed people who made mistakes like anybody else. Nelson's wife? Not so much.

  • I'd actually heard that they had loved each other, which is why they had such great chemistry in movies, but they were both married in real life so treated each other horribly in public

  • I have to say I can believe either way: idealistically I know that they were great buddies... and that is how I remember them: it is slightly to the darker side that I must turn to think otherwise, not so much of them as the times in which they lived. 'An off-screen romance' can mean anything from a buddy-buddy relaitonship to a passionate love affair. But what secrecy and lies the latter demands.. No; don't believe it!

  • "Interesting that all of her sources are either dead or remain nameless." Vague generalization...Obviously incorrect, since there are over 50 pages of source notes with name dropping of several famous people quoted in some length & alive when book was published. You are entitled to believe Jeanette was a virginal angel if you wish, that her marriage was made in heaven, etc. I prefer to see her as her own autobiography & 100s of pages of her handwritten letters present her - as a human being.

  • I have concerts and films of Nelson Eddy, Jeanette MacDonald, , Mario Del Monaco, Franco Corelli, Caruso, Alfredo Kraus, tagliavinni, Gigli, Luis Mariano, and many others, interested write to me

  • Hi, Sharon Rich here. In answer to your question, you're correct that "an intimate relationship can take on all those aspects." In my research, I found all of the above applied. During the movie years, they were sometimes close - or not speaking. Some MGM'ers claimed they were icy or bickered on a particular film set, Others saw them as inseparable. Surprising to me, their closest years seemed to be right after WWII. The '50s were tenuous. I do name sources; most interviews were taped/videoed.

  • Eddy Nelson and Jeanette McDonald were in their souls actually literal TWIN FLAMES in love; that's why their singing of love rang SO true and deep with their fans. We all have a twin flame or other half; when God created us as balls of living fire, He split us into both male & female halves; since then, we have tragically, as the Famed Love Birds' movies goes, in the matter universe, we lost touch with our other self. In this New Age, we are meant to reunite once again as ONE and find TRUE love.

  • What a beautiful theory. In the case of Jeanette and Nelson, I think you are spot on.

  • Jeanette Macdonald was a very strong minded individual and the idea that she was forced into a marriage to Gene Raymond by the studio is complete nonsense.

  • "Forced into a marriage to Gene Raymond" is simplistic. Putting aside the how/why they met, MacDonald found Gene "just like Nelson without the rough edges" (her words). Gene and Nelson resembled each other somehwat, and had similar lousy childhoods. Other issues: Nelson wanted her to be a wife/mother while Gene was happy to have her continue as Star. Whatever the dynamics, when she had 2nd thoughts and tried to back out of the marriage, it is completely accurate that Mayer stopped her.

  • I just purchased "Sweethearts" from an amazon seller, the book about their love affair. As a person who is enamored of these two, who were obviously madly in love with each other, all I can say is that we have their love for each other is on Turner Classics Movies for everyone to see. How could you miss it!

  • I am in the middle of reading "Sweethearts." How sad for them that they could not transcend their careers and have a married life together. Two very stubborn people very much in love. At least we have their movies.

  • they were still lucky. life seldom accomodate our wishes but for these two, as said in 'camelot', for one brief shining moment, they were able to exist and interact with each other in their way in their own space and time. their body languages when they were shown together in their movies just simply could not mean anything else. i wish i could have seen them in person then even if only for that.

  • Nelson Eddy is my cousin.

  • So do you have an oppinion about his relationship with Jeanette?

  • They seemed to have a beautiful relationship with each other. A lot of romances have their ups and downs and they may have hated each other once in a while but I don't think they were truly out for each other's blood.

  • After reading a bit more about their romance, let me put it this way; maybe they fell in love in the 30s and it was alright. But having to work with the same person for a long time and having to be married to that person can cause a lot of tension and resentment. Fleetwood Mac's a good example of that. I'm sure Jeanette's iciness towards him was a product of that. Their relationship may not have been all happiness and sunshine like on the screen but it sure as hell wasn't Ike and Tina Turner.

  • well put!

  • I'm glad you're on the side of those of us who believe, or want to believe, that they were involved in more than just movie making. Thanks for your reply.

  • Excuse me, 'on the side of those of us who believe, or want to believe' ???? Jeanette MacDonald gave so much love, beauty and grace to the world. Why, in God's name, would you WANT to believe that she was involved in a sad, doomed love affair. I want to believe that thew beauty she gave the world went back to her ten fold. It's pathetic to want to believe she suffered.

  • I won't excuse you, because you are doing just what I tried to avoid; critisizing other peoples oppinions.I do believe that whatever Jeanette gave us was returned ten fold; and why do you assume I want her to suffer? I would rather believe she found happiness with a man who loved her, than with a bi-sexual abusive husband. Either way, I think she sadly, did suffer; but just hope that she found some happiness along the way, dispite ALL the bigoted interferance..

  • So What??? if their romance happened today, no one would care. During their era, just looking at some one not your spouse was scandalous. I for one am happy if they found love together. Good for them.

  • Jeanette and Nelson are the only ones who know the truth and both are long gone. Interesting that Sharon Rich didn't tell this tale until long after both were dead. Interesting also that she is lining her pockets with this supposedly true story. I, for one, choose not to believe it. Jeanette had more chemistry with Gable in "San Francisco" than with Nelson. It's called "acting." Jeantte MacDonald was the greatest star ever and also a remarkable woman. Let her rest in peace, Ms. Rich

  • Sorry, but I first wrote this story while both stars' spouses were living; neither one sued. In fact, when Gene Raymond had a meeting with a Paramount screenwriter re: a possible film version he was more concerned about being outed in the film then denying a J-N affair. He did not like Nelson much - but who can blame him, under the circumstances?

  • Add me in as a believer in their romantic relationship. As you said in your book, the "This is Your Life" scene of Jeanette and Nelson together confirms my belief.

  • Thank you for posting this. I am currently reading "Sweethearts" and it's a wonderful book. It's heartbreaking that circumstances kept Ms. MacDonald and Mr. Eddy apart. I hope they are finally together and happy wherever they are.

  • And who wouldn't be upset, honestly?

  • well now the truth is finally out! baron turks

2nd book hollywood diva.finally admits that

there was a love affair between n/ eddy and

jeanette macdonald.!of coarse the 2nd edition

gene raymond had just died well well sharon

    rich,SWEETHEARTS.sharon was right all along!

    well done sharon, well done.

  • I`m confused-what do you mean by Baron Turks 2nd book 'Hollywood Diva"? Lorraine

  • HI,gemini730,Sorry im late.Hope you are keeping well. Yes BARON TURK has 2nd book out

Seen a write up about it in e/bay or amazon. It was about 2 months ago i read about it. Will try to find it again as i want to buy it.

Will keep you posted on that one.

  • I was unaware of Turk`s second book. I did not like his first book because of his degrading remarks concerning Nelson Eddy.

I`m fine-hope you are well too. Lorraine

  • hi gemini730, still looking for his 2nd book ,will try again in the hour. Degrading

remarks, yes!gene raymond called nelson a homo{dictating all along} just because he got

caught numerous times himself! he also made

sure nelson would know for the rest of his

life about about him[gene] rubbing jeanette,s

legs the last hour of her life.nelson always

did that on set. what a terrible dig at nelson. that was a knife through the heart.

when we fall in love Lorraine love is blind.

    GIRL 27!

  • Hi !

Not only the degrading remarks about Nelson as a person but Turk also degraded Nelson`s talent. According to Turk,Nelson was a mediocre singer.I have read the glowing reviews which Nelson recieved for his opera and concert appearances before he came to Hollywood. There is no doubt in my mind, that if he had not chosen to sign a movie contract, he would have had a successful career in Opera and concerts.

Yes that was a terrible dig at Nelson. Lorraine

  • I am 29 years old, I was raised by my grandparents, they introduced me to Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald as a very young child, I have always had the beauty of their singing & on screen chemistry in my heart. You could see love in their eyes no actor could produce, while singn duets. they were truly amazing, & I am now passing the gift of their song along to my child, thank god for youtube.

  • If there wasn't chemistry between these two on screen lovers, then who would have flocked to see the films they made. Many actors have temporary chrushes. How could they have stood each other otherwise over such a long relationship. Janette wasn't my favorie singer, but she was better and more charming than most of her contemoraries. Being fond of, is not having an affair. They were the favorite team for most cultured and semi-cultured fans. They were not POP Culture. May they Rest in Peace.

  • I think Sharon Rich is correct and there was a secret romance and love affair between these two people. People would have to be blind not to see it on screen. No way was it just acting.

  • A picture is worth a thousand words. One of the photos in this clip is of Nelson and Jeanette kissing at her on-set birthday party. It is NOT a love scene from one of their movies. The cake is not shown here (it's cut off) but you can see it in other photos taken the same day. The cake is signed by Nelson and others. This is two days after her 1st wedding anniversary. I know my husband would be quite angry if I kissed one of my co-workers like that. I hope they found some kind of happiness.

  • I have listened many times to CD`s featuring Nelson and Jeanette singing live on the radio. Their voices were not enhanced in these broadcasts. They sound just as they did in their movies. Lorraine

  • Dear django1942...You really need help, maybe a nice padded cell next to Britney ,you can share drugs, and maybe her enema bag!

  • transexual, no I don't smear people or make reckless incinuendos. I base my comments on well established facts and eye witness information. John4June..please refrain from using foul language as many children read this site to get my lucid observations on Hollywood idols

  • I can't help cursing - I'm Irish!

An bhfuil tu ag magadh fuim?? :p

I just really think you're wrong and I wish you would stop trying to ruin the memory of these people!

Na bi ag insint breaga! Ni aontaim leat agus ni chreidim e!

  • What does my being Irish have to do with that?

It may surprise you but us Irish are not ignorant fools! My refusal to accept "the truth" comes from the fact that I love these people and find it personally hurtful when you say these things-it has nothing to do with any connection with Ireland she may have!

  • Continued..

I know that you probably think I'm sitting here on some old computer, with red hair and dressed in green while yelling "top of the mornin to ya" but it's not the case!Having a cultural identity does not make us nation of ridiculous stereotypes!

  • The story of these two star crossed lovers was heartbreaking. The love they shared, never to be fulfilled due to time and duty. Their songs of love are a testiment to everything they believed in. I miss them.

  • The Lord Jesus said "Judge not so you will not be judged." May God bless the souls of both Nelson and Jeanette, and may they rest in peace.

  • He doesn't break down! He's just upset that his friend is dead. What a stupid video.

  • Richard Tucker was a tenor and Nelson was a baritone . How would the dubbing work ?

  • What a lot of baloney most of above. or below. Yes they were lovers. No he did not love men but women. His voice was not dubbed. He was trained for the opera and would have persued it except the movie people made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Don't believe all the tabloid.

  • Tabloid?! TABLOID?! What is Sweethearts? Certainly nothing short of, you guessed it, TABLOID.

  • hahahahaha...idiotic.

  • Are you serious? I'm going to go ahead and believe that you are just trying to annoy everyone for some weird reason of your own!

What a load of shit you are talking!

  • It's fairly well known that they were lovers. Extensive research has been done on this, including interviews with Jeanette's sister, Blossom and others close to them.

  • Good Lord, for people who insist that this book was so well researched, do a little bit of your own! Blossom was in the Motion Picture Country Home at the time of the "interviews" after a debilitating stroke AND was suffering from Alzheimer's! I've done an awful lot of correcting here, for such completely factual people.

  • Comment removed

  • Good Luck finding exact names of the friends of theirs who were interviewed. Ms. Rich finds that to be classified information, for the most part. I can go on tirades, if you'd like to send me a private message. :)

  • This is completely false, Blossom did not have Alzheimers. When I met her she was recovering from a stroke that affected her speech and gave her weakness in one arm and leg. Her mind was just fine, thank you. A neighbor who was visiting her from Beverly Hills said to me that Jeanette was in love with Nelson all her life and that I should ask Blossom about it. So I did and she said yes, it was true. (continued in next post)

  • She then introduced me to some of Jeanette's friends who filled in more pieces of the story and I would verify the accuracy with Blossom. Despite her speech problems, we communicated quite well those folks introduced me to others - and that's how the research went. I never "interviewed" her -- we were friends for nearly a decade and over that time, I asked her many questions as I continued to research. (continued in next post)

  • Blossom had her own checking account at the Security Pacific Bank across the street from the Motion Picture Home. She did her own banking and wrote checks, shopped in Savon and other stores; we went to Topanga Plaza together; we took car tour of Beverly Hills and Bel Air so she could show me various landmarks; we ate frequently at her favorite Malibu restaurant, The Sandcastle. Sorry, but it's a lie that she was incapable of talking to anyone and/or living a vital, useful life after her stroke.

  • She was a very determined and stoic person and used to make her "rounds," visiting the very ill and dying residents of the Home - and often bringing them gifts that she bought, or feeding them when they refused to eat. She introduced me to many old time film actors and directors and whereas I - a teenager - found it difficult to be around people literally days or hours away from death, but she was cheerful and comforting, holding their hands, listening to their stories, etc. (continued)

  • Anyone who says otherwise about Blossom didn't know the woman. If you have any questions about my exhaustive research, read the book yourself. You can also read some of the named celebrity interviews that were excerpted in my book "Sweethearts" at the maceddy website, click on the Sample Articles link to the left. Sharon Rich, author of "Sweethearts"

n.e.Oh these pastsecrets,HAPPY NEW YEAR SHARON

  • Adulterous lovers for 30 years? Damn. Dude, I didn't know that. I have only watched one Jeanette McDonald movie (San Francisco), and my whole idea of her is based on that movie. Jeanette, my image of you is totally blown. You see, I saw her as this virginal ice princess...the things you find out in YouTube...

  • My next door neighbor's cousin worked as an extra on Naughty Marrietta (one of the Pirates) He said that Nelson lip-sync'd all of the songs...actually Richard Tucker's was dubbed-in and they also electronically altered Jeanette's voice to be one and a half steps higher. In person she sounded a lot like Cher and one more thing he said was that she had facial hair surgically removed....but I like listening and watching their movies anyway

  • Just listen to his speaking voice and you can hear his singing voice. The same, certainly not richard tucker's.

    He sounds nothing like Nelson.

  • Oh, did I say Richard Tucker..I meant Richard Simmons...and I am sure she had a lot of facial hair removed.

  • Another stupid remark,This moron will have Jeanette a transexual next!

  • ..but the score of Rose Marie required the sound technician to modulate her voice 2 1/2 steps so that it sounded like she was hitting a high D.... you can actually hear it when she makes a feeble attempt to sing Tosca...Mario Su Mario..."Hollywood" at its best?

  • If you want to know what Jeanette MacDonald's voice really sounded like - untampered, with no "sound technician to modulate her voice..." then listen to her 1948 Hollywood Bowl Recital. Live concert,45 years old... she sounds darned good! Yes, it's a light voice, but that doesn't make it bad. Singing "Tosca" in "Rose Marie?" That role is for a spinto or more dramatic soprano, not a lyric. Opera singers often sang arias in films that they would never perform as a full opera on a stage. So what?

  • Jeanette `s voice is beautiful on her live radio broadcasts. Except for the microphone, I think( please correct me if I`m wrong) that her voice on the live radio broadcasts had very little sound modulation. Lorraine

  • Richard Tucker??? Wake up dear!!!! The most stupid remark I ever heard!

  • Dear django1942 the comments below are for your idiot statements! Please get some sort of a life!

  • OH MY GOD! I can not believe that you would compare the beautiful, classy and extraordinarily talented Jeanette MacDonald to a generic, fake, trashy pop star like Britney Spears! Jeanette can sing circles round her any day! I really can't believe that anyone would say that!

O and at the risk of sounding petty, Jeanette is much prettier and probably much more intelligent!

  • Is it really necessary to label them with a silly, trendy 21st century 'couple nickname'..'Maceddy'??

  • Just because he was upset and brokedown doesn't mean they were lovers. If my good friend passed away I would be very, very upset just like he was. You are drawing conclusions over something that is very innocent. It is my belief that they niether hated each other nor were having an affair toegther. They were just very good friends, as could be expected of two very wonderful people who made 8 movies together.

  • And they say You-Tube is for the kids....LOL..!

  • I believe that they were in love...you can see it in their movies...

  • That's called acting. This is a load of rubbish.

  • @auntbecky Rubbish is keeping a closed mind about the truth.

  • I met a gentleman who worked as a lighting man at MGM during the 40s and 50s and he told me that Jeannette and Nelson DID in fact have a very torrid and passionate love affair.

  • This is the first I've heard of this. All the extensive info on these points to 2 things: Nelson Eddy preferred men and he and Jeanette McDonald were not lovers- for whatever it is worth....

  • maybe he was in love with Gene Raymond

  • At 01.55 he does a Homer Simpson-esque 'duh'

  • Proves nothing. Who cares anyway. He almost sounds like he is doing some bad acting. They should have revealed to him Rock Hudson was gay - can we have a statement Mr Eddy 'aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!'.

  • @DoreExodus212327 Well, so sorry his grief seems to offend you.

  • I saw Allan Jones (co-star of THE FIREFLY)interviewed on the Joe Franklin Show (think from the 80s). He said Jeanette didn't like being in so many films with Nelson. I think she liked him but wanted to be a solo star.

  • @topperreturns Allan Jones was full of sour grapes.

  • minandjim

i do not want to beleive that there were attempted

suicides or illigitimate pregnancies as this completely spoils my childhood views of them and i still love to see their movies know after all these years..

  • I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. I've done another video clip on some old cigarette cards of 1930's movie stars, including: Jeanette MacDonald, Bing Crosby, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo,Johnny Weismuller, Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard.

  • wow who ever says they werent lovers are utterly and completely WRONG they were in love and its so sad how it ended and how they werent together =[

  • only rumors !

  • Lovers? Dumbest thing I've heard this week.

  • i dont think that they were lovers ---those were nasty rumors.

    remrom2

  • many of my friends told me she died in philadelphia--her hometown while singing in the stage.i've seen the jeanette and eddy story in tcm hosted by jane powell--after 2 years nelson died.they made 8 movies and the last was a flop--i married an angel.

    remrom2

  • I promise you, she died in a hospital in Texas. Perhaps your friends blended Nelson having a stroke onstage with... I don't know what with.

  • jeanette died of heart attack while singing on stage--she married raymond---he looks like nelson eddy.

  • Jeanette died in a hospital in Texas.

  • I agree they were in love and I love all the films with them both in still find them very moving after all these years.

  • I always reckoned that they were in love with each other just by watching their films and their movements towards each other etc and reckoned nobody could "act" like that unless they were very good indeed.

It was said that they hated each other but that could have been just to protect all interested parties.

I certainly realise that many double never got on and looked great on screen but I still think that they loved each other.

  • Sounds like an awesome read!

I'm off now to Amazon.com to order that book online.
