how can anyone not be a rolling stones fan???the best rock band we have been blessed with with while all the others broke upt...i think most casual classic rock fans have no clue of the depth and greatness of their music, others are just jealous of their longevity. There will never be a band like this again.Mick and Keith transcend rock and roll and have become iconic figures who will only be given their due, sadly, when they are gone.
@uglytwat123 On the contrary. I like the Stones. But not all their music. Don't like Honkey Tonk Woman either. It's just like a Brit to sound silly singing American country music and it's just like a Brit to take offense at another person's opinion. Assuming you are a Brit.
PS: I'm not an American but rather a Brit myself. No wonder I haven't been home in so long. Brits really haven't grown up.
@sushiman66 ahhh sarcasm, never fails to amuse me when people don't get it. and yes i am English, not British.
i also don't like all of their music, i think people who say they like EVERY song by a band have some strange desire to be a massive fan of their music.
of course it's the stones. there's a bit of weird phrasing at the beginning, granted, but it definitely is mick jagger, and you can hear keith doing the backing vocals quite clearly.
As the original (and best) Dobie Gray version wasn't released until 1973 it is highly unlikely that the Beatles would have been involved with this version.
@ Gwendolyne3: It IS actually a bootleg by the Rolling Stones. They recorded it in 1973 and never officially released this song. But it's possible to find it within some bootleg-labels ...
@goonchistaw I CAN tell Jaggers vocals, that's why I know it's not him. Either you have a FAKE bootleg or you were involved in the making of this sham video. Drift Away wasn't even on their Goats Head Soup album. It's a pity some people actually believe it's the Stones, it makes them look bad.
@Gwendolyne3 ..you can tell jaggers vocals, so you think its not him..mate, you have no idea about jaggers vocals..this is defo jagger, circa mid 70's and defo mick taylor on guitar here too
Yep,no Beatles,,just Stones.Coming from a girl who has their 'tongue' tattooed on my butt, I think it's safe to say that 'Drift Away' was an awesome song remade by the Stones(Dobie would be proud)! P.S. Nothing against the Beatles!!
@mul7777 bro you have no music taste. i wish for you to go join your Justing Beiber/Britney Spears wannabes, and take on the people who actually know music. this is a great song remade by the stones. Its like saying Street Fighting Man was a horrible remake(Done by RATM) anyway how dare you say this is horrible.
@dakommander1 I have great musical taste. You obviously don't! Compaired to Dobie Grey's version, it sound's like the Stone's are in the studio drunk and high goofing off. Jagger with the southern draw in his voice and no emotion, are you kidding me? In your eyes the Stones can do no wrong. And who is Beiber/Britney?
@mul7777 Thats most likely what they were doing but who the hell cares? its good and you shouldnt go posting negative shit on videos you dont like. just leave it be next time. And who the fuck cares "in my eyes"? thats just me you facist bastard, what should i look through everything in your eyes? and beiber/britney refers to the group in which many (including yourself) choose to follow
@dakommander1 Leave it be next time? I'm listening to Doby Gray's version, then on the right I see the Stone's did a cover, so I listen, Horrible! And I like the Stone's. There's a reason their cover was never released. And before you go around trying to label some people fascist, learn how to spell it and most of all know what it means. You guys do know there is a version of the rolling stones and the beatles...right? Not trying to start anything but maybe that's why some people think this is the beatles?
Yeah there is no way that ANYBODY, not even the superhuman Stones can actually do this song. This song..the soul and spirit behind it belong to the guy who originally made it famous...Dobie Gray.
@goonchistaw You are easily fooled. This is not the Rolling Stones but a poor imitation. If you don't believe me then listen to something like 'Angie' on youtube and compare Mick Jagger's singing voice. None of the several videos of this show them actually singing it. I'm a long time Rolling Stones fan and I know how they sound and it's not like this.
I always thought Mentor Williams wrote this song about the Beatles. I could be wrong but it seems that way to me or well its written specifically toward some band that he really enjoyed groovin' too thats for sure. That could explain some of the confusion some ppl have thinking former Beatles were playing with the Stones on this track maybe...
I can't comment this, so I was looking for Rod Stewarts version of this classic song but found Stones instead, it's great, and of course it's Mick, no doubt abt that. Love it!
That is definitely Mick Jagger, no one in the entire world sounds nearly as emotional as him when he sings. That is definitely Keith, no one else in the world plays with that much feeling, and nor does anyone else play so freely and easily. And thats definitely Keith singing in the background. If you cant tell thats Mick, then your not really a stones fan
@eventheblackonesdo It's not on any officially licensed release, just bootlegs. Originally, it was recorded for the 'It's Only Rock 'n' Roll' sessions in '73-'74, but didn't make the final cut. :)
@eventheblackonesdo It's not on any officially licensed release, just bootlegs. Originally, it was recorded for the 'It's Only Rock n' Roll' sessions in '73-'74, but didn't make the final cut. :)
This was suppose to be put on It's Only Rock and Roll, the 'concept' being 1 side covers and side 2 live material from the previous european tour....but they had enough new original material, and ditched the idea.. ended up going with Aint too proud to beg on the record, obviously...As evidence by the this and the Exile reissue, these guys still have some real interesting stuff in the vaults, hopefully more to come...officially at least.
THe Stones had to decide between this one and"Aint to proud to beg" for their album "its only rocknroll" since they only used one cover song per album. Aint to proud to beg one out. I wish they have included both. LIke this as much as Dobie Gray's version. Uncle Kracker covered it years later.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL REAL STONES FANS. Go to the 'yukemuripop' page and listen to the real Stones version of this song. Compare and be convinced. Your comments are welcome. I promise to be serious with all of you except goonchistaw who in my humble opinion seems to be a bit cranky and appears to have overstayed his bed time.
So rare for me to hear something new from the stones. I like the change in tempo for the chorus which works - from giving up in the verse to fighting back in the chorus.
As to people who reckon this isn't the stones - well I don't know why the good Lord gives people ears sometimes.
Gonna agree on that one! Stones have done a good job, but Dobie Gray just made the song the best possible way in a first try so no matter how much people might try it'll never be made any better!
I kinda like it as an alternative to the Dobie Gray version..except that Charlie Watts RUINED it by pushing the beat way too fast when he comes in.....or maybe its just that he plays right on the beat, which is very annoying on this song..it grooves much better with that laid back feel..right in the pocket...
Anybody who can't hear this is THE ROLLING STONES is deaf! It can't be the Beatles since this was recorded after they disbanded. Smoke some more pot and Justin Timberlake will sound like Sir Mic.
For those who want to know this is the Stones it was recorded for the It's only Rock N Roll LP, but then they chose to use Ain't too Proud to beg instead.
Anybody who knows the music of The Stones or listens to Mick Jagger can easily tell this is not them. Get over it guys, this is just some backyard band from a local college having a giggle at your expense.
Yes Dobie Gray's original is best. I think I saw him on the Old Grey Whistle Test in mid 70s. It's worth checking some of his earlier soul songs from 60s.
Still not sure about the so called Stones version - I thought it was someone impersonating Mick's voice
I was out of the country through much of the 70s and have not heard of the Old Grey Whistile Test, but I would like to. Whether the Stones version is real or not really doesn't matter much because Dobie's original version is so much better.
@jto1916 there are nothing wrong with my ears @ all if you can't tell this is the rolling stones it's obvious who is singing . mick jagger , who do you think it is ? abba ? volvo ? or saab oh they went bankrupt like your advice.
@goonchistaw The comment you made about me on this page is okay. If I got a big mouth I guess I'll have to take whatever hit the fan. But you sent me another reply that you did not have the guts to make public where you called me a liar, besides you can't count. Born in 56 - Stones fan since 65, that makes 9 years of age. The first song I heard was Little Red Rooster and I was hooked. I was a very grown up, bad boy for my age. Being a sound technician you got bad ears - ought to see a doctor.
@jto1916 you don't even sound capable of laughter , swede if you say what you think it doesn't add up a 45 year fan of the stones aged 53 from happyland
i didn't want to offend the person who posted this , which is why i replied on your channel , but yes i think you're full of merda. end of story smatrarse.
@goonchistaw Sorry dude but you don't sound anything but gibberish. Besides I'm not Swedish so your childish Volvo/Saab/Abba jokes don't hit home - by the way, you forgot about Ikea, Ericsson,Roxette, Cardigans etc.etc, not to mention all the moose in this country. If you want to write more garbage, you have to do it in puplic because my channel is blocked for you from now on.
@Kirklevington67@Kirklevington67 It doesn't sound like Mick singing because the quality of the sound has been transformed in such a way that has resulted in the song being in a higher key that originally recorded. If you take it back down, you call tell it's him.
Try MENTOR WIlliams, NOT Mason Williams. Mason Williams had zip to do with this classic great tune (Mason Williams has his own style and classics- as mentioned, one being "Classical Gas").
correct..the Beatles had no soul or funk. They were a pop band. The Stones were much more diversified and talented, albeit the masses will never get it.
give me the beach boys and free my soul i wanna get lost till u rock n roll and drift away! my daddy used 2 sing this 2 me all the time. i luv this song so much! ;)
'give me the beat boys and free my soul, i want to get lost in your rock n roll, and drift away.' that's the chorus, the lines they keep singing over and over. a song about music as a metaphor for life. very clever. it was a huge hit in 1973. I bought the 45 when i was 12 years old. i usually bought albums, but this song was too catchy not to hear repeatedly. there's a website called wikipedia that has information about any american music you might consider. it's usually correct about facts.

Anybody who knows the music of The Stones or listens to Mick Jagger can easily tell this is not them. Get over it guys, this is just some backyard band from a local college having a giggle at your expense.

This is one of the better covers of DRIFT AWAY, but it is nowhere as good as the original by Dobie Gray.
BluezGuitarz 2 years ago
Yes Dobie Gray's original is best. I think I saw him on the Old Grey Whistle Test in mid 70s. It's worth checking some of his earlier soul songs from 60s.
Still not sure about the so called Stones version - I thought it was someone impersonating Mick's voice
Kirklevington67 2 years ago
Hello Kirklevington67
I was out of the country through much of the 70s and have not heard of the Old Grey Whistile Test, but I would like to. Whether the Stones version is real or not really doesn't matter much because Dobie's original version is so much better.

@goonchistaw I think it's your ears there is something wrong with. My advice: Go to the doctor and get them cleaned up!!!
jto1916 1 year ago
@jto1916 there are nothing wrong with my ears @ all if you can't tell this is the rolling stones it's obvious who is singing . mick jagger , who do you think it is ? abba ? volvo ? or saab oh they went bankrupt like your advice.
goonchistaw 1 year ago
@goonchistaw The comment you made about me on this page is okay. If I got a big mouth I guess I'll have to take whatever hit the fan. But you sent me another reply that you did not have the guts to make public where you called me a liar, besides you can't count. Born in 56 - Stones fan since 65, that makes 9 years of age. The first song I heard was Little Red Rooster and I was hooked. I was a very grown up, bad boy for my age. Being a sound technician you got bad ears - ought to see a doctor.
jto1916 1 year ago
@goonchistaw Just for the record - I did not made my page to excite you. End of story.
jto1916 1 year ago
@jto1916 you don't even sound capable of laughter , swede if you say what you think it doesn't add up a 45 year fan of the stones aged 53 from happyland
i didn't want to offend the person who posted this , which is why i replied on your channel , but yes i think you're full of merda. end of story smatrarse.

@jto1916 don't worry you didn't you just don't make any sence .

goonchistaw 1 year ago
@goonchistaw Sorry dude but you don't sound anything but gibberish. Besides I'm not Swedish so your childish Volvo/Saab/Abba jokes don't hit home - by the way, you forgot about Ikea, Ericsson,Roxette, Cardigans etc.etc, not to mention all the moose in this country. If you want to write more garbage, you have to do it in puplic because my channel is blocked for you from now on.
jto1916 1 year ago
@jto1916 cheers for that , but what gave you the idea i would wish to go to your
channel again ? "dude" i live in the city/country i really live in,
which is manchester . england.

@Kirklevington67 Your daddy was wrong. sorry.
drizzetsrevenge 1 year ago
@Kirklevington67 @Kirklevington67 It doesn't sound like Mick singing because the quality of the sound has been transformed in such a way that has resulted in the song being in a higher key that originally recorded. If you take it back down, you call tell it's him.
I.e. this version watch?v=dzbjEXBcIYU

i think jagger sounds top on this. top song & post. nice.
goonchistaw 2 years ago
No-one has beaten Dobie's version. Worth pointing out that it's a Mason Williams song though ('Classical Gas' etc...)
nondescript11 2 years ago
I Like both versions the same,I like dobie`s singing and then again i like a raw rock sound of it too with guitar and mick`s voice(raw natural)
both are great
imaStonesGirl 2 years ago
OK Agreed! The Stones' rough edge has its attraction too. Just shows what you can do with such a great song.
nondescript11 2 years ago
@nondescript11 MENTOR Williams .. but yeah at least you got that far unlike most on here :) Awesome song!
ShortyPayne 1 year ago
@ShortyPayne I stand corrected!! Another senior moment. Thanks. Off to bed with no supper for me.
nondescript11 1 year ago
@nondescript11 - It was actually written by Mentor Williams (Paul W's brother).
However, "Drift Away" is a gas, and is also classical. :-)
ldixon11 1 year ago
@nondescript11
Try MENTOR WIlliams, NOT Mason Williams. Mason Williams had zip to do with this classic great tune (Mason Williams has his own style and classics- as mentioned, one being "Classical Gas").

@spacecraftengr Yes yes yes, sorry sorry sorry - of COURSE it's Mentor and not Mason. Slip of the keyboard.

plus this song wasn't written until a few years after the beatles broke apart...
wickedjoker719 2 years ago
Who thinks this is the Beatles?! This is too much soul to possibly be the Fab Four.
And also, that's clearly Jagger.
idratherbe8587 2 years ago
Look over to your right there is someone who thinks beatles are on this, look at related video lol
yes unmistakable that is Mick J.
imaStonesGirl 2 years ago
correct..the Beatles had no soul or funk. They were a pop band. The Stones were much more diversified and talented, albeit the masses will never get it.

Yeah It would be highly unlikely the beatles and stones did a song together and no footage was on youtube :P
you didnt answer my question tho, who starts singing along at 2:40?
knightruben 2 years ago
and btw in case u don`t know the stones have back up singers "Lisa Fisher" "Benard F."
imaStonesGirl 2 years ago
They've had more than just those two as back up singers. For example, they've had Merry Clayton in Gimme Shelter.
They have picked up and dropped backup vocals plenty of times in their career.
LandonC33 2 years ago
then who starts singing along at 2:40?
and dont you say thats Keith Richards
