We used to make a small pond with a piece of clear plastic about three or four feet in diameter. You dig a hole put the plastic in and dump water into it. Then you have a small pond and the fish clean off. No sand and less mess. Hey great video . Looks like a lot of fun and food ,heheheh
SMelt are running intermittently on Redondo and close to Poplar this season. HUGE Stripers were caught last weekend! FIrst time I have seen them on our beach. Apparently they are schooling from Pedro point to Santa Cruz, less so in SF Bay right now.
I used to cast(throw net) in martin's beach, half moon bay when i was a kid..but stop going, anyone know if theres a lot of people that stil catch smelt with their nets still??
Hey Rayme, is smelt considered a game fish? OR a bait fish? I saw lots of folks with nets when they run, and we had no problems. Bait or no, we fry and eat the suckers! YUM.
I also heard that Redondo to Venice, not so plentiful with Stripers, and I have not seen Halibut caught there either. Anyone have luck?
unklstuart, I am sorry I made a mistake for some reason I thought smelt were considered a game fish but they are not, so throw nets are legal for smelt. I have heard smelt were good tasting but never tried them next time I catch them I certainly will now try them. Thanks
wow pretty good i never used a throw net in the surf . i use a dip net on the pier i alway get nervious when i bring out throw net. but good catch . great bait smelt is all i use for halibut. good luck out there
not bad but i think i did better then that.....yup....my 7 foot net.....1 throw....and got 2 full buckets and a half of those big buckets......yup....... 2 throws and got 4 big buckets......but yeah....nice job though....keep it up..welp if those fish comes again at my place...then i'll be sure to film it and post it on here so you guys can see.....very fun.....and hard to carry when you got a full net of them...hehe
leevwj4, 1 throw and 2 full buckets, 2 full 5 gallon buckets on one throw..LMAO..Haaaaaaa, and I caught 3 stripers on one cast with a hair raiser. Ive been throwing nets since I was 6 in hawaii, and ive been smelt fishing for over 35 years. I know guys who throw 8 and 9 ft nets, during heavy runs and NOBODY has caught 2 full 5 gal. buckets on one throw.LOL! Your full of shit!!! Ive fished 2 man nets, and A-frame nets, I currently throw a 7ft net. Put it on film because I got to see this! LMAO!!
Redondo beach aka Strawberry beach to the long time vets of smelt fishing. Pretty good year this year. Although I caught most of my fish at Venice, Francis earlier in the year. Yep, I miss Martin's beach. To all the regulars out there see ya next year. Its the bald guy who shoulder throws his net ;)
Thanks for posting, I'm the fat guy enjoying surf smelt fishing with my Son. We usually fish for surf smelt at Martins Beach until it changed hands this year. We had a great day not expecting to see that much fish this late in the year.
Rodondo beach has been great for smelt. I cought alot of fish this summer. Hope they are still running. I wil be checking Rope beach this weekend. Fish are heading south.
Will keep you posted. Im an avid fisherman, but theres nothing like smelt fishing.
I miss the old days when smelt run they RAN all over the beach.
Those days when you could empty the net, fold, run to the wave and just throw (used to fill a bucket in two or three throws).
I was a Martins beach regular.
I wonder if they are running yet this year

Throw nets are illegal in California for game fish I would watch out for those game wardens.
rayme07 2 years ago
Rayme07 no they ARE NOT ILLEGAL for surfsmelt. Game fish, yes, but not for surf smelt.
