  • great video. what's ur favourite paiting of a dog?

  • Val where are you from??

  • wow! verrry interesting!! haha and cute :P

  • Thats awesome. you should become an art teacher professor or something. Preferably at FSU! and if not you should just visit.

  • Where is De Nachtwacht by Rembrandt van Rijn ;) It has a dog in it too

  • I love this I love it.... please do more videos were you tell us about art and how it relates to life situations.. thanks!!!

  • I think she resembles Anne Bancroft - the Italian actress who played a lead role in the Graduate.

  • oh the dog.. I think i "sawas" this story.

    I

  • I love learning about the art history and the meanings of things that people don't always catch. Also that tree behind you in this video looks awesome, I want one. lol Well ttyl

  • AH YUP! I believe she is trying to go off on an ART tangent dude! Maybe tha WAR is too heavy on these B K Scott?!

  • Val, I love when you vlog! :)

  • Was this directed by Ken Burns?

  • It's a shame that this happened, but i guess Ellen should have taken time to read the contract.

Personally, I'm not much of one for pets; too much work in my opinion. But I suppose if I were with someone who likes dogs, I'd be happy with one too....do you like pets Val? >_>

  • Ellen DeGeneres isn't normal, you have to remember that. Dogs are okay, can be a good friend.

  • Dogs are cool! I'm not so hot for this video, but love, I mean love, the theme music! Um, that said, it's cool the way you(Val) give us a little art history tie in with the commentary. More of these vids pls.

  • I think dogs became so important to us because they are loyal and show they have a real need for our companionship. Good video Val.

  • dogs became so important to us because their puppies are so damn cute.. lol and the whole gaurding thing yeah that works too hehe

  • yea, I never thought about that, and I study that painting of the married couple in high school lol...hmm, something to think about; however, about the Ellen thing...I think I need to watch more tv lol, thabks for the clip val ^_^

  • I love animals, but dont like pets much. However I think it would be a very different world if we didn't have our pets. Homes would be very quiet and there wouldn't be the entertainment and love the give.

  • i like cats more ;p

  • Woof!

    I miss my Chihuahua. :-(

  • As much as I dislike cats, I gotta agree that they're better than babies.

  • feel free to post vid responses of your pets :)

  • I learned all these paintings in my art appreciation class :P

  • :P

    :P

  • I went through my art book to find art with dogs and one of my favorite paintings, "Las Meninas" has one. :P

I think it really good you are relating art to current events. I use to not think that was important until I saw the photograph "At the time of the Louisville flood" and it reminded me of Katrina and New Orleans. It made me sad since that photograph was taken in 1937 and things haven't change. :(

Anyway, keep up the good work :DDD

  • dsdassadfasfsa

  • What happened to Iggy?...Where is Iggy?

  • nice paintings val

  • i have seen alot of these paintings in museo del prado in madrid, they are cool. My dog is my baby!!!

  • do something on cats!!!! i love cats...

  • Dogs are way better than babies. They'd probably win in a fight too.

  • Cats are better than babies ! :P

  • The dog in the marriage painting was not in the original painting.

    The artist added it later.

I forget details because I learned about it last semester *sigh*

But yea, that's all I can remember, I can't recall why he added the dog.

Most likely for your reasons mentioned.

  • Janeyanna, to add to your comment, we

also become attached to dogs because the

affection we receive from them is 100%

    unconditional. Unfortunately, the affection

we humans receive from each other is often

conditional, exacting a hefty emotional toll.

Valentina made a sagacios decision choosing

this topic for her vlog. There exsists as

much poetry and painting dedicated to dogs

    as there does to people.

  • very cool

  • That's very interesting :) Thanks for making this video.

  • When you said "FACT" I thought 4 a second you said a dirty word.

  • Thanks for the wiki links Val! Oh and I loved the comentary! I did not know dogs had such historical value in art!

Wow three exclamation marks in a row... better not add a forth! Doh!

No really, keep it up. I wish I could make a small donation for these videos, they're really interesting.

  • I was quite fascinated by some of the recent conclusions about domestication. I guess they could apply to many animals, but it was mostly dogs that were studied. They understand us better than any other animal. I've heard people say cats are smarter because they're less obedient, but I see that differently. They're not less obedient, they just can't communicate with us as well as dogs can.

  • (bow) WOW...Just when people thought Youtube was going to the dogs, Miss Val comes along, and with her unique flare for the dramatics, throws a bone, and shows that art can often be the lie that tells the truth.

  • An interesting tidbit Val. Thanks.

  • Thank you, Val, for teaching me the symoblism of dogs in art. I never knew that imagery before. Thanks you, thank you, thank you!

  • you seem like the type of person that would never judge somone,, you just seem so honest and loyal,,, your awsome val

  • Dang that Ellen can dance! You wanna collaborate on some Thomas Kincaid jokes,or not so Much.

    Your a great Artist.

  • Hey! Dogs playing poker! Me and a friend have a problem with that painting, because we both remember a different version from our childhood that looked very different from the one you commonly see (like in this video). I think we decided that it might have been Dogs playing pool.

  • I feel enlightened:)

  • My dog has paintings of me in his house.

  • Infact he's got a painting of me playing poker, and his bitch hates it soooo much.

  • Val, i think maybe--maybe--that dogs can sometimes appear for their uniqueness of character...they are all such strange hounds in their own way...? i'm guessing a metaphysical component to how they rock a painting too...but you never know. peace, Val!

  • cool points, i agree with ansami5 though... ;D

    keep up the good work

  • awesome, love the new expanded things :)

  • just wanted to agree with a bunch of other people here -- it's great seeing you at another time of the week, and i love the lessons and point of view you provide.

as far as pets go, i wonder if a chinchilla depicted on canvas...

  • VAL! i loved this ep. (:

how u connect paintings to the daily happenings is AWESOME!

  • If I say I love you that may sound creepy to you, so let me just say; Val, you're hot.

  • Val,

Slip a dog in your next painting?

  • OlgaKay was here and I dont care what Mikma has to say about it

Valsartdiary, I wish I was subscribed to you before I made the you tube Stars video, you so deserve a video about you

  • wow. your videos really make me think about life... my therapy. :)

  • I think Ellen breaking down just makes her human. She has a love for animals and I can totally understand her being upset the the dog was taken away from 2 kids that quickly grew to love him.

  • Loved the vid! :)

Just thinking out loud...Painters have the emotional attachment angle covered with dogs (pets). Could it also have been fashionable to show/learn the technical skills for painting a furry animal during some eras???

I seem to recall a painting by Renior???? in which he includes a dog painted with a million colors, yet the brushwork and the color scheme work brilliantly within the larger context of the painting.

    Anyway, thanks so much!

  • Hmmmmmmm....... a dog with a million colors.

Assuming Renoir had already prepared 1,000,000 different colors of paint and applied say one color per minute, with no sleep, it would take him 694.44 days to paint just the dog!

That must be one COLORFUL dog!

    hehe

  • You forget, one brushstroke could have maybe 10000 colors. Not only that, but the luminescence qualities of the paint could multiply those colors by 50. By my estimate, he painted the dog in 2 seconds. :D

  • Thank you for making another one of these types of videos. I loved the last britney spears rehab one and this one was just as good. These types of videos are fun!

  • How about you unwind a little bit by having a nice, refreshing, ice-cold Coke Val!!! LOL

Come back to the dark side. With me! wink wink.

    AAHHHHHH. So refreshing.

  • I love your stuff, Val :) I think this dog stuff makes the news to keep the more pertinent issues about our society drowned out. For example, our nation will NOT have a media discourse as to the causes of 911 or how we had NO solid reason to gut Iraq, but we talk about dogs or blondes that get kidnapped :/

  • Chopper wants to be immortalized in a portrait.

  • ...he dose not play pool or poker, but he has a taste for fine Cuban cigars and plays a mean game of Monopoly.

  • Excellent video Val

  • we've got a dog that does a ballet dance step.

  • Very interesting so thank you very much for that! Awesome!

Have a nice day!! ssmmiillee :P

  • i adore your little art history lessons and your resourcefulness. art history gives so much depth and adds new layres to art. art is so much more than just painting a pretty picture. this can also be seen in the amount of thought that goes into your weekly vids.

i think the dog is a symbol for friendship because dogs need a lot of attention and can be easily trained whereas cats are sleek and slender and can be a bit aloof and independent.

  • Some people don't see dogs as pets... they see them as food. We judge those people as bad, but hindus might judge we who eat cows as bad. It's all a matter of perspective.

  • I saw that Arnolfini Portrait when I was in London this summer. I didn't think that the portrait was so famous but it was one of my favorites. I love how you take some silly celeb story and connect it to art. Thank-you

  • That portrait is really famous. We wrote about it for our art history midterm.

  • Don't make me think too hard, it's friday afternoon. I don't watch t.v. so the Ellen thing I'm clueless about. Val, is that paint on your shirt? I went to DickBlick to pick up some paint i needed. They took a picture of me with paint on my face shirt and arm. Sometimes I'm too involved with my projects to worry about how filthy i am :)

    sorry i was babbling...

  • What's with the "adds" Val?

  • Like the spontaneous mid week commentaries. ****

  • Dogs are companions, and animals are innocent. That's why it has cause for such response. At least that's why I feel so bad for Ellen and those little girls. Love your vids!

  • I love val during the week. Its like an early birthday present.

  • Interesting...have a good weekend

  • i love dogs =]

  • A+ :) Great presentation! and I think that cats in paintings usually represented the opposite, like promiscuity and female sexuality. For example when comparing Tizian's Venus of Urbino and Manet's Olympia. The prostitute is by a cat, and Venus being "virtuous" is by a dog.. I wonder why that is?

  • very true. Dogs have been our companions since the first early farmers began settling and growing crops... that means for 1000s of years we've identified with these animals, there has to be something deeper than just a fascination with them.

  • You always teach me new ways to see. Thank you.

  • I've seen a number of those paintings before, the way you brought them together around this one focus is pretty cool. I like the connections you made. You have a mind for art. Keep this series going. I really like it.

  • I feel a little bit smarter now! :]

  • hmm, that's cool, but cats are better =D

  • Good work. Dave

  • u have great vids.

  • Val of Valsartdiary,

As well as finding this video educational and sweet, I find you adoreable.

  • I went to several art museums yesterday, and couldn't help but think: Why is Val not up here yet?

I can just see myself looking at at least one of your paintings some fifty years from now and saying: Wow, I wacthed her create that.

You are a scholar for what you're doing here. Keep it up!

  • u are amazing, i started watchin ur videos 2 days ago and a just can't get enough :P

u are as colorful and full of life as your paintings!

u really know how to put a smile on my face :)

i wish u the best of luck!

  • i just figured they just jumped into the paintings ;)

  • I did a paper on Giacomo Balla's "Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash" when I was in school because I love futurism, but I never thought of the dog's significance in the painting... hmm...

  • Hey Val,

Apparently there was some dog drama on YouTube as well, where a lot of partners mingled in the debate when someone at a SouthTube convention later didn't like the fact her dog was filmed and in a video.

AargH! And gotta love van Eyck, next to Hieronymus Bosch a very grand master of our Low Countries.

  • Great video, Val! A mini art history lesson connected to current events.

    Excellent. 5* from me!

  • Val, I LOVE these Art History vlogs that you do. I remember covering this subject in a course I had in college. Great video.

  • I absolutely LOVE these little vlogs in between episodes. Gives us a different way to look at things. :)

  • I like your perspective on the Ellen/dog situation. You referenced it but didn't dwell on it. Keep on vlogging, Please!

  • Very interesting, you're right dogs are often been used as the catharsis of our emotions... Check out the amazing work of William Wegman

    Great show btw ;)

  • w0000w! more than one video this week?? you made my day Val! I like it how you start a discussion about recent events, you make people think. Not everyone has such abilities!

  • I haven't heard of the DeGeneres dog controversy but I'm glad I've been able to avoid it up to now :) Is your lamp for all seasons or do you decorate for autumn?

  • good opportunity to work in dogs playing poker. ah, a classic! your videos have definitely helped me look at paintings more carefully and understand better how artists use colors and symbolism. before most of that would just completely go over (around and through) my head.

  • Thanks for the nice weekday surprise. I have kept my mouth shut when anybody brings up the " ellen crying thing" I could not figure why she would have a breakdown On a Taped t.v. show, (except for publicity) . Your relateing it to art was great. thxs. see ya Sunday ! aloha, R.

  • Okay now that was a really cool opinion video. I like this new approach you have, Val. Again, taking current events and relating them to the history of art, and the meanings behind why paintings were made the way they were, that's just very cool. =) Thanks.

  • thanks Val, very interesting. I was familiar with the Renoir picture; not so much the Van Eyck.

  • Love your vids:) Always insightful.

My opinion concerning the dog is a bit different than yours, though. I think people get all emotional about stuff like this to keep themselfs distracted from all real problems. It's kind of a coping mechanism or something.

  • Dogs are fun!

    02:12 dog was my favorite

  • Poignant! These are like good college lectures.

  • Your videos are great and your very easy to look at WINK

  • I love these vlogs Val. I learn so much from them. Like a little art class. Keep them coming. :-)

  • Sit, Ubu! Good boy, good boy... ;p

  • She forgot to remind us to eat our

    cookies :)

  • Very nice extra vid this week Val.

  • I always love these little extra videos that you do.

  • You rock!

  • Val, there is something very special about you. You have a way of teaching us.

  • I love these videos. They're so interesting! Its like a mini art history lesson in two minutes and thirty seven seconds. But without any homework. But much awesomeness.

  • Wow, I REALLY like this vlog, Val! It's excellent the way you relate current events to art. I actually feel like I learn things from you about art, and it's great. I am definitely one of those people who becomes emotionally attached to pets. I'm a giant 6'5" burly guy... but I cried when my dog died. I guess sometimes pets become part of the family.

  • Oh, I forgot... this is actually VivaToddVegas... I finally started that video comedy troupe I told you about, and our name is Sin City Scoundrels. We posted our first comedy video yesterday.

  • More of a cat person myself... Don't like having to clean up after dogs :) I love that Renoir. Actually the only one I recognized.

  • On the contrary, Chopper comes in, eats, naps, goes back out.

Patches... on the other hand... impregnates all 57 sleeping spots with fur, tracks cat litter, distributes 30% of his caned food about the kitchen, jettisons the occasional hair ball for me to step on, knocks my decorative stuff to the floor if I fail to relinquish his Royal grub in a prompt manner, and if he feels I've been exceptional lazy, he leaves a turd of defiance on the front porch.

  • I'm no longer bored... for 2 minutes 37 seconds.

  • Hoorah, I didn't have to wait until Sunday to see more of Val! :D

  • Is the tshirt your'e wearing in your video cosa nostra? by the guy that won project runway? (i forget his name). PS, you rock

  • wow thats a good wayy to look at things :)

  • a cool, little insight!

    you are soo smart!

  • your CRAZY cool :)

  • Michael Vick NFL quarterback killed a few dogs and look how big a deal that was, mostly for the reasons you say. We respect dogs very much.

  • yeah i dont get the dog thing...i mean i could understand her being frustration but crying hysterically may be pushing it a bit.

  • hehe i love that "um huh" sound you made @(1:06). Thanks for posting this informative yet entertaining video!

    -Vidal

  • hey Val!!!

I replayed to your email, please check it out!

    good video as always!

  • Hi Valentina, I'm surprised to see you, I'll buy you a dog of your choice,Just for one little kiss !.........how about it ?.....lol !

  • i love your art! =]

  • Very cool.

  • Thanks again for helping me to appreciate art... you are great!

  • Dog domesticated Man...

  • I have the dogs playin' poker painting... It says, "Pinched With Four Aces" underneath it..

  • I love how you always refer to paintings for life issues and topics. Your deep concepts are beautiful and very brilliant, i am amazed at how you put such detail and character in your art too, In my opinion your Art and style will never be forgoten, and cherished for many ages to come.

  • Aww.. so sweet. A bit exegarated maybe.. maybe a lot. ha ha! But thanks so much, I appreciate it.

  • Well, you being the one that makes it, its who you are, we all don't see the greatest things inside of us, its everyone else that tells us the greatest parts about ourselves.

You are doing fantastic and you are welcome, hehe.

  • art is sexy..like you ;]

    oh soo sexy

    lol like the vid :]

  • Video enjoyed, thank you.

  • Mission accomplished. I can relax now :P

  • I always loved that Jan Van Eyck painting because the couples reflection can be seen in the mirror :) I really love this series you've come up with...genius! Take care Val :)

  • .. and I really like it because you can also see the painter in the mirror. :P

  • Ditto.

    Clever painting.

  • great video!!

  • Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
