This is where the early film version of Huckleberry Finn was filmed (with still a child star Mickey Rooney) as was Steamboat Bill ... not far from this bridge... Buster Keaton's last independently made silent film that is an veritable masterwork. Highly suggest viewing these films for a good look at what the Delta was like pre-speedboats and suburban muck. Keep the Delta a beautiful secret.
It actually was not that fun to drop into when on the dare to monkey bar across. The water is very cold as it is direct run off from the Sierras and the current is much swifter than it appears. Hence the fish that can deal with it are hearty monsters like sturgeon. Kids were much skinnier and yes, much stronger in the 30s if they were working farms. And like most kids of all eras, they do stupid, life risking feats of endurance that they never attempt in adulthood.
they went through the windshield of their Ford. It landed them in the hospital and they were lucky to get through it with their lives. I believe this was late forties/early fifties when this happened. The attendants were supposed to be on constant alert for all traffic -- cars and boats. He let the boat through without checking for a car.
That is the Freeport Bridge. My father and his brothers and friends would monkey bar the underside of that bridge all the way across as young boys in the 20s and 30s. My grandparents went through the windowshield of their car when the bridge attendant wasn't paying attention and opened the bridge with their car on it. So yeah, don't walk across it. A lot of people put an enormous amount of work into that area.
@dahliafully That is a long bridge to monkey bar across. Dropping was probably fun too. A land like the Delta did a lot of work to create. I bet it took men and women of fortitude, strong enough to monkey bar across any bridge in their way. BTW: Sounds like a tough way to stop a car. I'm assuming your grandparents hit the span as it rose before them, instead of driving off the bridge into the water.

Great video! I love the scene in Isleton Joe's, and the reading of the Humphrey poem.
