These Canadians fought for a new democracy in Spain, for a better world and the stop of fascism, and what would end up becoming the 2nd world war. They had the foresight and courage to do what most of the world wouldn't. Their government turned their backs on them and had a prime minister that towed the line with Britain.
These men still don't get their honour of being included in Remembrance Day here. The those men, I am proud of them. This is well before my time, but deep in my heart.
@pipichico The soviets SOLD material and food to the republicans, while the germans bombed cictis and ports, and the italians troops foughton on the land.
We,Republic Loyalist Spaniards, never will forget those Canadians who came to fight with us, against fascists. All those guys-dead and alive- are in our heart and our memory, and they and their descendants are allways wellcome here, their homeland. Spanish goverment gave time ago the nationality to all of them.
It is a tradegy that these heroes are not remembered on rememberance day. Maybe we should petition the government to include these veterns with the rest?
Indeed. 725 is a rather conservative figure though. Many more Canadians, particularly at Jarama and Belchite simply disappeared or were "Disappeared" - executed by the Fascists after capture or by Communist officials for "Political Unreliability".
@Number7smokesForEver I agree, most canadian youth today dont even know about canadian names like Norman Bethune... its a pity because In China this name is regarded with high respect, and we ourselves even though being canadian hardly ever remember the name.
You are not taught this histroy for the same reasons you are not taught labor history or anything else about the struggles of working class people and oppressed minorities. History is written by conservatives elites, the people with power and wealth who own most of the country's assets, the policians, the media, the education system - and you.
