@immblueversion The only problem i have with it is the fact funimation keep re-using the same voices from major animes that THEY dubbed. So its more of the fact that we want it fresh rather than voices that dont match one anothers characters (sometimes depends on how the voice it) Natsu's voice is the same as Death the kid and Allen Walker's so it feels rather bland. Other than that though im fine with the rest, Happy's may take a while to get used to but its all good.

It could be a little weird to hear the same VA over and over again, especially if his/her voice is distinct (doesn't really affect me since I don't watch nearly as much anime as I used to). But I have to say, Todd Haberkorn really brings Natsu's character to life. I think he totally steals the show. Maybe you'll like it eventually.....

I dont think many people understand how difficult it is to dub anime. it's not like you're just acting; you have to act AND match the lip flaps AND match the original Japanese voice actor's acting

do you know how much your acting skills get restricted because of a preexisting time frame and character interpretation?! moreover, you act in a booth ALONE.. you don't have other voice actors who you could react to like the original Japanese ones

just by getting this far, Funimation deserves some cred

Natsu still sounds like a passionate goofball, Lucy like a sharp-witted everygirl, Happy like a happy-go-lucky blob of snarky cuteness, Gray like a tough yet cool-headed guy, and Erza like a strict but sweet paragon of justice. And that's not to say about practically every other character they nailed.

You probably don't admire the English dub as much as you say you do if you agree that the English voices ruin it.

But considering that Todd is a very good actor and plays the part with the same craziness as his counterpart, I think he does a fine job with his role.

Just because you don't think "ERR-zah" sounds right does NOT make it wrong. It may make it weird, but not wrong. So get used to it, just like how everyone had to get used to the fact that Natsu was being played by a guy and not a girl.

It's not bad, but this Natsu doesn't come close to the Japanese version. But maybe he'll improve as the series progresses.

Erza on the other hand sounds very good IMHO.

@RockyH2 Natsu is very hard to imagine a voice for to begin with. Funimation did the best they possibly could with Todd playing him. It suits him. You're probably just used to the Japanese version.

After listening to it a few more times, I do have to say Natsu's voice begins to grow on me. His voice is still a bit "rough around the edges" but I do agree he'll be perfect for the role eventually.

And yeah, Natsu (like Luffy, and to a lesser extent Goku) is a difficult character to assign a voice too. It must be very difficult to give a voice to a character to replace his/her original one, knowing so many fans are already familiar with the series.

In many dubs -not only anime- that is not the case. An example is when a character is called by his/her first name by someone not that close to them, but the dubs fail to demonstrate said relationship between characters..

You want a dub that literally has no difference between the Japanese and English version other than the fact that one version is in Japanese and the other is in English? Watch FLCL. There you can revel in your English-speakers-using-Japanes­e-honorifics tendencies for about three hours.

They understand the sacrifices that must be made when crossing the language boarder. That's why they take the time to provide us with the original Japanese versions with English subtitles, as well as English dubbed versions for those who can appreciate the time, effort, and sacrifices they make to give us quality anime entertainment.

But this person was complaining that this dub, like most other dubs besides FLCL, doesn't keep Japanese honorifics because s/he thinks the way the Japanese are able to reflect just how close they are to each other through the use of honorifics is better. And that, my friend, is bullshit. English is English, and Japanese is Japanese. And because the English dub is in English, they should thus speak English. But that doesn't make the FLCL dub (one of my favorites) bad.
