For some reason i like Terry's vibe playing with the two mallets better than someone like Gary Burton who uses four mallets. Maybe it's the hand speed and the fast notes he can play but as a drummer i seem to like this sound better.
If I was a young man in the 1950, I would have loved his music. Well, I just recently learned of Terry Gibbs, what a great artist very talented. Long live Terry Gibbs and God Bless.
Terry Gibbs knows his music and how to creatively play the vibes. To say that he swings is clearly an understatement. Bravo for Terry, a stellar performance. Thank you for the posting. There is no need to debate about determining the value of the number of notes being played. Listen to the artist and enjoy the sound, rhythm, and soul. Enough said.
Vibist Terry Gibbs,,,What a great, swinging jazz musician! As a 16 year old kid just starting to dig the music I saw Terry w pianist Terry Pollard at the Terrace Lounge, East St Louis,,,about 1953. Ive seen him numerous times since then and his technique amazingly is consistently better than the previous time. Viva Terry Gibbs.
I've got all the Dream Band recordings and think that west coast band one of the best and most exciting of all the contemporary big bands since the late 50s!
I was not familiar with Dave Samuels. I looked him up on Google. It says he has played with many groups. My favorite vibe player, however, is Gary Burton.
Yes, I believe that is true. I saw him play in Chicago years ago. He would "bend" the note by striking the bar with one mallet, and then slide the other mallet on the bar, causing the tone to drop. It would be the same effect as a saxophone or trumpet player bending the note downwards.
sorry at 69 after 35 years inNZ away from Germany, I still struggle with english spelling, what has that got to do that I think Milt Jackson could say more with a 3rd of notes. Do you play music?? That Terry Gibbs is a worldclass player is known. But I stick
to less is more(more heart). But thanks for pointing
It is an old debate in jazz: more notes versus less notes. Does less say more? Does more say less? This particular piece is a showcase piece so you expect Gibbs to be all over the bars. Also, the vibraphone is one of those instruments that lends itself to percussive type playing just by the nature of the instrument. I think it is basically a philosophical argument and in the end it boils down to a matter of taste.
Hey! Where's the blind chick that sings?

I like his old stuff a lot. Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson and Terry Gibbs are all in a class of their own.
And as far as I am concerned most definitely Hall Of Fame material.

As the one who posted the video I would kindly ask all involved persons not to debate who's English is better!
Als derjenige, der diese Video geliefert hat, bitte ich alle Beteiligten höflichst, nicht darüber zu debattieren, wessen Englisch besser ist!

Was he the one who "bent" notes? I know his name ,but can't remaber his style. I loved Lyonel Hampton(and his humming along) and Milt Jackson.
