I was a friend of Link's. A little note. On Elvis's 1st tour he was Link Wray's warm up act. ...Says it all....Link claimed that Elvis got the Big belt buckles, cowboy designs and headband styles from him. Someone asked Link if he was mad, Link said "Hell no, I felt honored he stole half my old stage acts. He only steals from the best."
Misread your post, sorry. I've seen DD 4 times, sadly Link only once. Link destroyed Moondogs (Pittsburgh PA) the night I saw him... still get chills. Thank you all for keeping this alive.
@stella1973c, I didn't say Dick Dale was dead. i was referring to the time that Elvis, Link and Dick Dale jammed together. Thank you for being one of many that like this music if it weren't for these founders of rock and roll many wouldn't being playing today! Rock on
It's annoying how people think they have to pick sides when they can enjoy more than one thing. I like link, but I also like elvis too, so I listen and enjoy both. Easy.
@timmmcveigh and luketrash... Elvis, Link and Dick Dale jamming together ripping out shit kicker jams together... 1 night... drinking.. whoring.. and God knows what else for that 1 SPECTACULAR NIGHT? pure magic...... Rock on Gentlemen Rock On!
Ha, I recognized the stained glass windows in the thumbnail. I remember in this same time period Dick Dale played at the M Shop as well. And we had the Delstars from Des Moines as a decent surf rock band as well. Good times.
So true MCU12112, however Link , as a graduate of the Neil Young school of Guitar, Link almost single handedly torpedo'd R&R. Don't mean to be critical of any musician but cannot understand how Link and Neil for that matter can stand on stage and bang on the strings without ever fretting a chord or logical progression of notes. Before refuting my assertion just do a search for R&R Hall of Fame show featuring J. Page, Robert Plant & Neil Young. 1st time I have ever seen Plant pick up a guitar.
@Elesaar27 lets not forget all the crappy movies he made. i saw a concert (on dvd) of elvis and he was doing karate while singing. he was a creepy dude.
@mnmmmmmm yup, he rocked the chicks, but that was about it. everytime i listen to rumble i try to place my self back in 57/58 when it first came out. can you imagine how much more hardcore that shit must have sounded back then. way before metal, punk or rock n roll. it still gets me all hyped up.im sure youve heard dueces wild that song is what rock n roll is all about.
@SonicProvocateur It;s hard to say who actually invented DIstortion. I watched a documentary where it states that the Beatles invented Distortion, My one friend suggested it was some punk band....
@BloodShotNow No, Link Wray was the first to use distortion/overdrive. He poked holes in his speakers to get that sound in 1958. The stones copied him later before they switched to Boogie. Noone can get distortion like that out of a period Fender rig, not even cranked...unless it's broken!
@BloodShotNow Lots of people could make claims about who was the first to use distortion and it wouldn't have been invented as such, more likely just overdriven amps, but the first deliberate use of feedback in a recording is said to be by the Beatles "I Feel Fine" (1964).
Poison Ivy cites Link as a major influence, and she plays like him for sure. But I don't think they ever "worked" together....maybe in some drug-haze dream session...
i love this guy when i was 17 a friend did me a tape of all the best LINK WRAY instrumentals...only one song has lyrics to it. He was raw but he was a genius...his guitar playing is in fact simple but he was a pioneer...I see how the CRAMPS adopted him.
@XuliusCaesar niether of these guys were the king of rock and roll. Chuck Berry will always be the king! This guy is awesome though. bu hell never be as good as Chuck Berry.
@spooge1234 don't get me wrong i like chuck b and all but rumble is way more hardcore than johnny b or maybelline (2 very good songs). those songs are fun in a cute way. rumble still scares the hell out of me its just so hardcore.
thats what Rock and Roll started out as cause it came from country and blues. Chuck Berry IS rock and roll. i like ALL of Chuck Berry's songs. he's the reason why i picked up a guitar in the first place. @handsomevision yeah but how often is that shit wrong. besides im sure it was somebody trying to frame him for money. I mean come on. its Chuck Berry. those kind of rumors were circulating before there even was internet. You cant believe everything you here.

Link was known for jamming a pencil into his amp before recording to get a raw sound. He was also a gearhead tinker who liked to fool around with stuff. He could just as well made that guitar.
It is a Yamaha model SG-2 circa 1964. Yamaha's version of the Fender Jaguar. Link's had a couple of modifications as well as the Indian bonnet that he painted on the pickguard. After I saw him play at Knitting Factory in Hollywood, I had to find one, first I had to find out the make/model and then looked for about 3 years before I found one. When Link put it up for auction I felt so bad about it that I gave him mine at the Music Box gig. I hope Olive didn't have to sell it for gas money
I will take guitarmaniax word on the details and stand corrected. I do remember that one of the modifications on Screaming Red was a built in distortion effect that hadn't worked in years. A "hippy friend" from Tuscon had done that work. Awfully nice of you to donate your guitar. I'm sure Olive has pawned it by now but still... you rule.
Thanks Jack but I don't really rule, Link Ruled! I remember he had put Firebird tuners on it as well(maybe from the Firebird he used in the '60s?). They are really cool, well built and rare guitars. I told the Yamaha rep that they should reissue them but nothing came of it. I figured that Link had given so much to all of us and only gotten ripped off in return, I felt like I had to give something back. Didnt really care if he cherished it or sold it to the Hard Rock or burned it up for heat. RIP
I did the same thing. Bought a red SG-3 in late 2007. I liked it so much that I also picked up a red Yamaha bass (the SB-2) from the same era. Long live Link's [music].

Elvis vs Link.
Elvis would come in wearing a white rhinestone jumpsuit and would adopt a karate stance.
Link would enter the room in jeans and an old t-shirt, look at elvis posing for the girlies, shrug, pull out a .38, and shoot him in the chest.
Link would then walk away wondering why he wasted a bullet on something his swichblade could have handled just as easily.
