Insanity = Blurred vision? Allways thought it was a shame they didn't get more creative with the insainty effects, they don't really effect gameplay much. Would have been cool if the game would have made jack hallucinate things the player might expect to see/hear, such as enemies and their related sound effects. Or other things that might make the player second guess the game, and actually care about avoiding sanity effects.

@irritablerodent When you get a gun later in the game, and keep it loaded but lose sanity, you have a chance to commit suicide.

@N33DL3R Yeah I know about that one. But only from the loading screen tips. It never happened to me, even though I purposefully kept my sanity low to see what effects it had. It's kind of a cool idea, but it doesn't really add much to the game other than a cheesy way to die.

@irritablerodent In all fairness this was one of the first games to have something along these lines. Try Eternal Darkness if you haven't already (that uses the sanity status very well) and don't expect many games with sanity meters to come out, Nintendo legally own it. *mutters*

@GoldenGal42 Eternal Darkness was more creative when it came to the insanity effects. But it has the same problem this does, they are just a gimmick with little gameplay implications. In ED the hallucinations are obviously not part of the normal flow of gamplay. They might confuse you the first time round, but afterwards you can simply ignore them without penalty. I kept my sanity low just so I could see all the effects. Presumably the game intended for me to avoid sanity loss.

@irritablerodent I can see where you're coming from. Though nothing will frighten me more than the ED error screen. The best type of insanity effect would be where you don't notice it until afterwards. The creative team would have to be very cunning.

@GoldenGal42 I would like to see a sanity system that plays with the player's preconceptions about gameplay conventions, and makes them second-guess themselves. E.g. When enemies are about to attack, they usually make some kind of sound. The game should play those sounds when you are low on sanity; as opposed to random weird noises in the case of ED. Spawn in fake (but identical) enemies that disappear when you pan the screen away. Generate ominous shadows that have no source. Etc.

@SimontheSorceror dude its not a lie. i got it around september there was some kind of quakefest tournament goin on. and steam decided to make a great offer and put all bethesda and id (or whoever makes quake) games into a package for $70. it was a great deal. fav game in the pack was fallout 3 goty. this game though is a bit glitchy on win 7. you should check out steam the have great sales pretty often.

@CROWTHEKILLER The early part uses the story structure of Shadow Over Innsmouth, has alot of the same locations, and even some characters (plus the Deep Ones). Later on the Yithians and Polyps from Shadow Out of Time show up, only vaguely reprising their roles.

But to answer your question, this is an original story. Also, Lovecraft didn't write books, he wrote short stories for the pulps.

What I don't get is that Jack goes insane when he sees corpses. He's a police detective, isn't he? That's like his job to see such things and be calm. I can understand his fear of heights or that he's trippin' when he sees some devine space god monster. But he should've become a gardener instead, if he can't keep his guts together when he sees some dead bodies.

You have a point there. But I think it all goes around the fact that he fears something he doesn't know, he fears something what killed all those people, he fears something he cant understand ; The fear of the unknown. The game is all about Cthuhlu mythos, after all.

@TheLoukku What I admire is the depth of the whole thing which Lovecraft and writers like Derleth created. It's called mythos for a reason. If you wouldn't know that it's fiction, you could believe that those religious believes truley existed.

I agree with ya there. Some people actually think that these creatures Lovecraft represented, are gods for some people, a religion for some people.

But anyways, to create something like this, you need to be a freaking genius (which Lovecraft seemed to be) or simply just twisted from yer head (maybe Lovecraft was a bit insane too?). For example Robert E. Howard seemed to suffer of schizophrenia, and some people think that it helped him to create such powerful thoughs.
