Thank you Shawn, what you said there has touched my heart in a way no one will understand. You just made me feel like regardless of my skill level whatever I decide to make is great in it's own way.
The man speaks pure wisdom. We've all been there, right? I'd stand in front of the television with some crap playing while repeating some semi-useful speed lick over and over.
Got bored, went off, bought an archtop with what felt like bass strings laced up on it, playing standards for a few years, and presto. When I returned to playing rock, my technique had just naturally improved from playing great tunes. Not because I drilled scales and modes 'til the wee smalls in the morning.
It's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it ~ Michael Angelo Batio
That's a wise saying, but Shawn Lane's right. Music comes from the heart, not the tip of your fingers. But to you can't play good without practice, we all need to develope tone and technique that sounds good. Doesn't matter if you're fast or not, if it sounds good, it's good.
yes, wise words from batio (and lane in the clip) indeed. too bad most people think if they can't understand it or "it contains no emotion", it sucks. however, i would suggst that if you just enjoy the technical aspect of playing then there is nothing wrong with just doing that either.
this is what I loved about him the most....total humility and a true concern for the music and NOT the fame and flash....this tenderness is what kept him from getting the recognition he desrved and it's what allowed the people to take advantage of him.....
,,,but he will live on and most importantly ,,,his music will,,,,
AGREED!!! AMEN!! technics are a big help but don't forget your main objective... play and express the music. if you want to be masters of technicality which is not bad at all, better learn them and just be a music theory teacher and not a guitarist at all. but if you have both.. i just can't imagine how far you will go
I always try to balance technique practice and creating. Running through scales at high speed is a great way to build strength, but if you don't have a good vocabulary then it's not interesting.
the solo(s) from scar tissue - red hot chili peppers for example are such melodic solos played on such a low technique level, but they just fit in the song and make me feel good, though i usually like jazz-stuff much more
Arguably the single most skilled guitar player i have ever soon, music just flys out of him, and his hands are completely free to express themselves. Not often that comes from any human being.
o a technical level it isn't arguable. nobody can play the stuff shawn did. the only person to come close is marshall harrison, but he doesn't have the picking speed and just misses the stretching skills. i personally think he is the greatest guitarist ever, but it depends on what you judge a guitarist by.
You gotta' love this guy's take on music and life itself. Letting people know the driving factor was creative expression and not just the drive to be better than anyone else.
He's the Michael Jackson of guitar. Seriously Imagine Shawn Lane and Michael Jackson in a band. Perfection.

Its so simple. Somehow millions and millions of musicians still don't get this.. Do'h.
You gotta love Shawn Lane, even those who don't like his music.
