what happened to all the pictures of the non-show Morgans? There are millions of non showing Morgans that do it all, too. Their thinking brains make them excellent and safe for anything you want to do, as well as being your best friend.
We realize that competitive showing is the smallest part of the equine owning world, but we used this event to show the broad versatility of the Morgan breed for many different activities. Many of these same horses go home and do trail rides, cross country, and carriage driving with family and friends as a leisure activity. 98% of the year, our Morgans are "non-show" Morgans doing it all at home, just for the fun of it. Morgans are thinkers, they have a special mind.
I love my Morgan! But a lot of the Morgan horses in this video I don't like the look of...Morgans are supposed to be compact, short-legged sturdy-looking horses, not long-legged arabian-types. :I So much of the original, classic looks are dying out. It might as well be a dying breed if people continue to breed it to look like an arabian or a walker!
You should have mad a shorter video by making the title What Cant A Morgan Do?..would have been alot faster ;) like if you agree .. I have a morgan Best thing I EVER purchased.
I love my morgan. Morgans are definately the most versatile breed. I hate where I live in TX though, its dominated by Quarter Horses and the judges are ALL AQHA judges and place my morgan and I below the QH's in the open shows even though he's a grand champion hunter and a superb jumper. And I cannot travel very far away to go to shows. AMHA please bring more morgan to north Texas!!! :(
@Equestrian08 Oh I know how you feel. Where I live its dominated by Quarter Horses to and my friend took my trainers Grand Champion mare to an open show and she got last when she had a flawless ride. The other people were yanking on there horses mouth, getting the wrong lead, and so much more stuff. And good luck trying to get more Morgans down there!!! I hope you do!
My mare is a Quarter/Morgan cross with a beautiful Morgan head and a Quarter body. Some Morgan is visible in her frame but mostly Quarter, stout body that is built like a tank. When tied, she almost always parks out.
i have an "old style" Morgan, and he is the greatest most durable little guy i've ever owned. He's one hand away from being a 'horse'. I've taught him how to jump and last summer i took him to this trail place- we did trails for over 8 hours one day and he was perfect after! Morgans FTW :)
I have a Purebred Morgan and I do Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, And all of those other speed events. He runs Barrels in around 15-17 seconds. Morgans are definitely the best/most versatile breed there is!
Not all horses can do this because its up to the horse but almost all Morgan Horses can do everything. I personally think when someone says a Quarter Horse can do all of this is because it is PART Morgan Horse. I LOVE Morgan Horses and they are the Best!!! Plus they are the first American Breed.
Morgans can also be multi gaited, meaning "some" Morgans have intermediate gaits like the running walk or rack. to see videos check out our website at Missouri Morgans or just email me. Beauty, brains AND gait!
@3yorkiegirl i personally think QH's are the best but thats me. my QH can also do that... because shes a QH. its not hard. any breed can do that if u think about it. Not disagreeing but i do like them.
It was nice to see all the National caliber performers, but wasn't said was that many of those show horses go home to be trail ridden in the off season. There are many Morgans who have never seen a show ring, yet are winners in their endeavors. We use our Morgans as their ancestors were used, working cattle, trail riding and horse camping. True family horses, my Morgans love being around their humans.
The one thing this doesn't quite state is that you can do several of these things with the SAME Morgan Horse - you don't have to have a stable full for the different activities, because Morgans have individual versatility and one Morgan can do many things well, as long as the owner can keep up! ;-)
A nice update on the breed. Historically it helped build Colonial America, was the only breed chosen by the US gov't to supply their horses, yet has become one of the most beloved & versatile horses for pleasure, family, & show today. One family Morgan can be great with kids on the trail, take Dad for a drive or compete in CDE, while Mom can go to the horse show in different disciplines & always have fun. We now have 14 Morgans, as some are rescues. Enjoy one. They are always people pleasing!
racking saddle horse and other breeds were put into the u.s. army also, there bloodlines werent state of the art back then, i highly doubt the government said 'ok, were in war and thousands of people need horses, but we can only send morgans' .
The current UVM Morgan Horse Farm was the locale from which the US Gov't bred & raised Morgan horses. An act of Congress in 1905 established The United States Morgan Horse Farm In Weybridge,VT to perpetuate the Morgan horse. It operated until 1951. I believe that the decision was based on the historical ability of the breed to do the jobs needed. Other breeds must have been used, but it was the Morgan that was chosen & bred to supply their ideal military & cavalry horses.

Most problems with horses are caused by owners who don't know how to get the best from their horse. It's easy to blame the horse, as you have done.
