  • This is to da people who don't wanna watch her cutting skip to 1:10

  • where do u get pure sodium

  • WHAT TRICKERY IS THIS??!!

  • phenolpthalien is in itself a weak acid

  • pH = power of hydrogen

  • i love your hand

  • phenolphthalein's pink color = bases, right ? and red = strong? or ?

  • at a moment i thought she was going to eat that thing....

O Lithium apresentou cor VERMELHA!!! GUT;p

  • thumbs up if your here for stupid homework

  • das war in meinen empfohlenen videos, weil ich mir "lithium" von nirvana angehört hab... cool^^

  • No freakin way a real scientist would have nails like that... And she cut the metal like a wuss

  • I guess that's why we don't see Tennis racquets made of lithium.

  • thats boring. watch brainiacs if you want to see alkali metals in water

  • @1spooky4 braniac is fake

  • Comment removed

  • @minimaus08161

  • @ThaRealKalimpa

Das soll Sie auch nicht!!! :-)))

Unwissenheit + Neugier = Schwere Dummheit...

  • das hast du schön gesagt

  • an alkalimetal

  • mit denn ringen und ketten + fingernägel...darf die 100% nicht im labor arbeiten -.-

  • imgaine if u mix that n put it in your blood system you die instantly loool

  • Totally hot science babe from Germany. three of my favorite things at once. Hot babes, science and Germany. Ahhh the trifecta!

  • what if you swallowed that thing

  • you would be more dead than a frozen zombie

  • why they don't offer a lithium gunpowder mix in resident evil to kill the cutest zombies

  • HOT SCIENCE CHICK ALERT!!!

  • a ring /= marriage. I have a ring and I'm totally now where near marriage material.

  • watching her cut that had to be the most annoying thing i have ever witnessed...

  • haha i know what you mean.

  • hahah xD agree :P

  • @XEvoXXx it's because of her nails...

  • The Lithium reacts with water to form Lithium Hydroxide. The reason it turns pink is because of Phenolphthalein, which is an indicator of an acid.

  • Indicator of an alcaline environment, rather.

  • @ps349 Phenolphthalein is an indicator for pH 8,9 to 9,8.Come on u dont know chemistry??

  • @ChemistryLab1

dear mr smart ass, some people don't really understand chemistry all that well or have yet to take part in chemistry.

  • @ps349 phenolphthalien, is "pH" in short form right? :p

  • wut can u do with tht

  • Is that a bug in there?!

  • No, its Lithium, its a type of metal.

  • Ooo!

New way of dying your hair pink

    (;

  • got a question: did it turn pick because you put a chemical in along with the water? because in chem class the lithium didnt turn pink for us it just fizzled(if thats even a word)

  • probably Phenolphthalein

  • you can see phenophthalein being put in right at the beginning.

  • che topa dioboia!!!

  • Lol init, even I knew that.

Yeesh whats the need 2 be extra kripsykangaroo If u knew wat hes saying lke any ova smart person then shut the hell up!

  • Thoroughly underwhelming, she's cutting it up like its her last meal - just put it all in. And did you see all those rig she's wearing, and those long false nails! how did she get to work in a laboratory?!

  • shes kinda cute. id like her to play doctor on me

  • DO NOT do what johntheripper222 said! ha lithium metal will start heating up as soon as you open the battery. it reacts to moisture in the air. its one of the main ingredients in glass

  • Lithium metal in Li ion battery? I doubt it.

They call it a Li ion battery for a good reason.

  • Lithium ions are not the same as pure lithium metal.

  • He sure does :D

  • ok now,drink it!

  • sick can u put a bigger peace in there

  • wow....

  • you can try this at home:

    1. get a Lithium ion battery.

    2. crack it open and there should be a shiny strip of metal that looks like tin foil wrapped around a thing inside it.

    3. take it out and unwrap it.

    4. take a bowl of water and set it to the side for now.

6.cut a small piece out of the lithium (trust me no more than a air-soft BB size is enough)

    7. drop the piece of lithium in the water and watch the pink spread.

  • and add a few drops of phenolphtalein indicator to the water, or no pink!

  • ahhh yes! i almost forgot! yes also add phenolphtalein indicator people!

  • put the rest of the pieces in the water, i wanna see some lithiun flames

  • wow!... pink

  • its coz of Phenolpthalein indicator turns pink when in contact with basic solutions :P

  • SHE'S HOT!

  • so much finger rings yet no gloves unsafe1\ chemis!

  • 2Li(s) + 2H2O(l) -> 2Li+(aq) + H2(g) + OH-(aq)

Phenolpthalein + OH- -> pink phenolpthalein

  • Well yes obviously it is because lithium which is an alkaline metal is highly reactive due to the reason as seen in th video it was kept in a bottle of oil so as to prevent its reaction in any surrounding and environment.

  • Alkali metal, alkaline earth metals are a whole different thing.

  • Well nahh you dont say!

Obviously I know that, so what is ur point in telling me?

  • Because you said alkaline.

  • Well I meant alkali metal and it would not have taken much of a genius unlike yourself to know that.

  • So true, wow u know a lot about chemistry lol.

  • oooo me like pretty colors

  • ohhh chemistry in action! lol. have you tried burning magnesium? jk

  • poor idiots, how many time do u have without seeing a woman? go get a girlfriend, or i guess u r all too freaky for that...

  • Alright, but serioiusly, what kind of scientist gets their nails done before doing an 'experiment' that consists strictly of blowing shit up?

  • she may be about m8 40 but i dont mind, i may be only 22 but i'm quite fond of the older more mature variety of woman, i suppose they sometimes have a greater understanding of men and they can teach you a thing or 2 in the bed room department, eg. the things your a little unsure about!

  • she is one hot bitch

  • she should do that experiement in nude

  • She is SEXY!

  • whatta wussy she can barely cut the shit

  • Haut's halt no a Pfund nei

  • she is like 40

  • That woman its more hot than lithium

  • MADNESS?

    THAT...IS...CREEPY!!

  • haha i needted this for chem

  • gmil gracias x este video,netexperimente,de veras,mil y una gracias:D

  • and how many husband foes she have? how many times she married? look at her rings

  • One sexy scientist!!!

  • berndpfe, ur rly smart and know ur stuff about chemistry but um...nobody cares.

  • the basic chemical reaction (oxidizing the lithium, water-free) is as follows:

    4 Li + O2 --> 2 Li2O

If this is done with the presence of water :

    2 Li + 2 H2O --> 2 LiOH + H2^

    or in other terms:

    Li2O + H2O --> 2 LiOH (Lithium hydroxide)

the greater presence of OH- than H+ dissipating in water causes an increase of the pH value within the watery solution.

  • well.. the pink colour shows the liquid is turning into a basic condition (pH value increases from 7 upward). this is caused by oxidizing the lithium accompanied with the release of hydrogen. Exothermal.

  • Pretty cool experiment, shows the rxn of water and lithium well. The reason that it's cut up so small is that if it weren't, it would probably rocket back out of the water when dropped in. It gets REALLY hot when reacting with water, and will burn your skin if it touches it at any temperature.

Also, to those wondering what the pink is from, it's from a pH indicator, most likely phenathalyne

  • JESUS CHRIST, can we please cut it up any smaller, lets just see how freakin small we can get it....omg

  • WASTED TIME!

  • its potassium powder thats what my bio teacher says

  • hes wrong. tell him i said that.

  • than wad is it?he's a weirdo teacher who cares anyway?

  • ...can you read?

  • ?? what are you typing about?

  • niice puprpley pinky colour!!

  • what happens when you put more in *laugh miniacly*

  • I like this chick. Nice nails. She is in every video!

  • fizz fizz ich like it XD

  • when you mix chlorine and lithium and burn it...same color and effect happens!

  • i thought since it was a alaki earth it reacts violently with water? why does it turm pinkl?

  • so the gas liberated is hydrogen. In brief, the indicator dosent change during the reaction.

  • ....well, at least the chic was hot.

  • put sodium in water and u ll see something much more interesting.

  • indeed. Thats an indicator called phenolphthalein (C20H14O4), it turns a bright purple/pink colour when in the presence of a base, in this case Lithium Hydroxide solution, it is colourless when in acidic or neutral solutions, thus there is no colour when we see it been added to water.

  • oh, so the reaction produces lithium hydroxide and oxygen gas? I thought it was lithium oxide and hydrogen gas. oh well

  • wow thats actually a nice color
