@MONSTA01 I had a strat with scalloped frets. I enjoyed it for its ability to really dig into the notes, but it was weird playing on it. It was a long time ago, but I just remember not liking it too much. My JEM's have the last 4 frets scalloped, and I like it done there. I dont think a full scalloped neck is needed imo, but Im not Yngwie either.l
Again.. nice playing. You show the versatility of the strat with the dimarzio pu's. For the guy that ripped your tone as thin.. did he ever listen to the neo jam video? I bet not...
@270Gmoney Those frets are normal height. The wood between the frets is "Scooped" out, thus giving the impression that the frets are high. This scooped neck gives the player more ability to bend and vibrato notes.
@tubester581 I owned one of these for a while, it feels weird at first, it forces you to use a light touch when you play otherwise if you push down too hard the note will go sharp, for bends and vibrato there is nothing better than a scalloped fretboard, that said, I no longer use one
It's pretty funny that this guy plays better than 90% of the people on YouTube yet gets criticized more than faggots playing a 2 chord progression on an acoustic. the playing was fine, good actually. The guitar is amazing. nothing to complain about in this video. :)
He says that the scalloped neck doesn't help you play faster, THATS A LIE!!! ROTFL, I played one of these at a guitar store recently and I just glided across that fretboard. I will tell you its kinda hard to do certain chords up on the higher strings due to the Scalloping, but thats fine. Harmonics were beatiful and I absolutely lost it when I did arpeggios, UGH!!! lol, Smoooooth is the only word to describe that guitar.
thats something really stupid to say considering he is using a malmsteen strat, and malmsteen is the king of speed shred. And really thats your opinion and most people watching a guy using a Yngwie Strat and a Joe Satriani amp expect good playing: which means speed and feel, not just feel.....
Well listening back to this I can see that I recorded it using the camera's mic's and it was low volume so I can hear how it sounds thin. Not all of it is fast and as I mentioned in the info its improvised so Im not just gonna pull a hey jude melody out of the bag now am I?
@Shulai1 js bach and malmsteen dont have much in common, js bach actually was a more accomplish musician, writting in many style, for many instrument, and playing himself many instrument to a level that would put malmsteen to shame,
@paulscape72 beleive me, the scale goes a lot further down then you, just look around in here, keep practicing, my guitar playing isnt as good as you, i play piano, cheer up
the bridge pickup is a bit sharp, but really thick at the first 9 or so frets, the sharpness is probably because of the brass nut, everything would be fine if you put some graphtech saddles and nut on.the neck pickup is a big contrast to the bridge, big fat sound, like a 50's strat pu,but way thicker, and really articulate the farther up the neck you go,theyre great, and still vintage-y blues/rock pickups clean,it would make a great jazz guitar too, just get used to the extremely scalloped neck haha.
No. It gives you much more movement on the strings, thus you have to hit each note with absolute precision or else your finger will slip off the string or just make a mess. If you cant execute vibrato or legato on normal necks you wont be able to with scallops either. The issue with finger pressure is exaggerated, you have to have a clumpy lumberjack grip to accidentally sharp a note. The added movement does make it easier to bend the strings though, it cant happen with some chord changes.
Most people foolishly equate scallops as easier. It does require more precision. Having more control of the strings doesnt make it easier to play. If you want scallops because you think it's easier you'll be disappointed. I would urge you to try it out though. It feels different. After a while you will really appreciate that extra control over every nuance in your playing. Vibrato and string bending being noteable areas. It's like you are grabbing the strings. I wish I could describe it better.
you could nt ve described it better blitzbok..and i totally agree of what u said...yngwie said in his own feature in a magazine that its not easier playin with scalloped fretz ccause it needs more precision as u said bro:)
It isnt something you can try once and appreciate. You need to spend some time with scallops. Personally speaking, I prefer scallops and will never go back. If you can get hold of a cheap neck to have scalloped it would be worth doing so in my opinion. If you are confident there are sites going through the procedure in detail. Hope this answer is at least partially helpful boet.
hi ! not at all ! I just got my malmsteen strat this afternoon. The scalloped neck is just FANTASTIC ! I don't find any dificulty in playing on this kind of necks...only pleasure !
On the neck, there's a nitrocellulose lacquer finish and on the body, urethane finish...I've bought mine without having tested it, and believe me, I'm not disapointed at all !!! I love this strat (moreover it's very versatile...you can play everything from blues to (of course!) neoclassical and shred riffs...).
i usually use the steve vai pink ibanez picks of dunlop ones about 75-100mm. I occassionally use those big fenders...but it doesn't really make much different...I play just as badly whichver pick I use!
Can you please tell me. What's it like playing on this scalloped fretboard? Does it feel strange not being able to not feel the fret board? Is there any disadvantages to playing on this?
I've got a question. My musicstore has an Yngwie Fender signature for about 800... But it's black. Was there ever an official black version of this guitar? They say it's from 2007....
It's not a real YJM....They have the Sonic Blue...Vintage white, and red....they also made Japanese YJM's...they came before the USA signature model but they were only in Vintage white though....Fender never made a signature black one....if they ever do...I will buy one
There are a few varieties of fake chinese, some really good and some kinda chunky and poor quality. Usually you can tell the difference if you know about real fenders, but with upgraded components some of them play very well. This YJM is a genuine USA version though.
so can you tell the difference between the original and fake one? There was a 1984 57 reissue strat for sale for about 600? and Im positive its a chinese one.
that was a world class demo my friend. loved the jazz part esp, that guitar kicks some ass and looks dreamy. 5/5/ and subscription, im lookning foreward to hear more of your playing
Not much different to a normal guitar...I wouldn't say it makes it easier to play faster or sweep. I found the guitar a little harder to get a good action because you have to account for the scalloping. It basically plays like a strat. Cheers
I have an instrumental song called 'neojam' up on youtube done with the Yngwie guitar but generally I dont have the video recording when doing proper songs. So yeah I am just wanking around with equipment mostly on Youtube ;) haha Cheers tho
i have a jimmie vaughan tex-mex strat (most expensive mex strat along with buddy's) because it hase the trem an components made in usa but rest in ensenada. i put a brass nut on and a dimarzio hs-3 in the bridge and the yjm's in the neck & mid position, a new 3-ply pickguard, and reseted setup on the trem. it sounds GREAT!!! the only thing i didnt do was scallop the fretboard cuz im scared :D
Hey, I have a question...I really want one of these guitars, but i want to know if its capable of the really throaty Ray Vaughn type sound as well Yngwie's sound.. Or would i have to get the pickups changed...and how is it for playing, classic metal like maiden and priest?
SRV will be no problem...you could change pickups but the sound is probably more reliant on amp/pedals. For maiden and priest it will probably manage it but it has a more rounded sound being single coil...certainly not good for metallica. Cheers...great guitars BTW
Not necessarily faster, that depends on your setup. Its easier to get string vibrato and grip the strings and it doesn't take long at all to get used to. It feels really cool and also looks kinda cool. Definately worth it, its my favourite strat and good for a range of music except death metal tight stuff. If you are buying a 2007/2008 model is will have nice deep scallops too. Cheers and enjoy
Hi, I'm thinking about buying a malmsteen strat but not sure yet... A few questions: Can you use it for playing hard rock/metal stuff (power chords etc.)? Can you obtan a decent amount of distortion without using a pedal? (I own a marshal 50W combo)
if it is a marshall MG series, then no because they can't get a metal sound without a pedal. If you want metal, but versatile check out Carvin, Jackson, and ESP. Maybe Charvel, but they would be out of this price range.
The YJM pickups are super low output...you would have to change the bridge pup to a mini humbucker to convert the guitar into a more metal orientated guitar without a pedal. You would have to choose a pickup that fits into the single coil slot and is high in output (e.g. 13k+). The scalloped neck encourages you to vibrato the chords a little so it wont sound as crunchy and tight as other dedicated metal guitars (like ibanez, ESP, Jackson, Dean) but it could be done through a simple PU swap.
do you have any suggestions on the tone settings and volume settings when you are playing live?? Every sound guy that I have dealt with cant seem to mix my JSX. They tell me either i'm too compressed on the ultra stage or I have too much gain. I only run the ultra channel @ 50% if that and i dont use a compressor pedal.. any suggestions?
I only use my JSX at home. For live or rehearsal I use the Marshall or Elmwood because they are way easier to get a loud tone with and fit the mix much easier. The JSX is not easy to get a good mix with live. Try using the crunch channel up high in gain rather than the ultra and watch those pre/res controls. The ultra ch often blurs the EQ range so an EQ pedal might help. Also you could try reducing the gain right down and using a distortion pedal?
i kinda would love to see you playing this guitar on the crunch channel on the jsx with the YJM308. :) I wanna see if it gets me the Yngwie tone. :D Because I will buy this amp for sure then, best tube combo I ever heared.
I'll see what I can do. If I turn the gain down slightly on the crunch channel and then use the DOD it will get his sound. I think my marshall 50w plexi does it slightly better...its a little more dirty in tone whereas the JSX is smooth. It's a great amp for sure. The Elmwood is my favourite amp though. Its incredible!
I dont use the MXR EQ at all but it might help with live performance and your sound guy. I keep the signal chain pretty clear. Usually Im just plugged straight into the amp and use some delay in the loop, that's all. Sometimes I'll throw a phaser or flanger in front.
Depends on the scalloped guitar. This fender USA YJM strat doesn't have that problem. In fact it stays in tune incredibly well and doesn't detune at all even on chords. You tend to vibrato some of the chords anyway. Cheers
I have got one exactly liks this one. Playing chords for me is a bit more difficult 'cause I tend to press some strings too hard and it gets sort of out of tune. But I love the tar, it gets me great control over every note.
Mine never goes out of tune - its amazing. I fully stretch in the strings though anf take some time to wind them on properly...something I dont do with my floyd guitars! I love the 70's vibe about it too.
I dont think I could even come close to Gilbert except in names :) We share the same name but his skill is light years ahead of mine! I can't believe his alternate picking, although I dont find him particularly melodic.
Im playing through a JSX on this demo and it has in built nose gate, plus the pickups are somewhat noiselss being stacked single coils and then the amp is on very low volume so not much hum. JSX is very quiet amp. Cheers
I got used to it pretty quick. It doesn't really make it easier or harder, just requires a slightly different playing style but the vibrato is nice...it encourages you to use vibrato even on barre chords. It also gives the guitar a different tone - there's no wood to dampem the neck tone.
Hey, i clicked this wanting to see the guitar up close. I was interested in this guitar except i have problems actually finding a store that sells it..could you tell me more about the scalloped neck? Like comfort-wise and the main differences in preformance/feel compared to a standard neck?
The new fender malmsteen necks are flawless. Its a vintage style neck with jumbo frets and Ive found the scalloped necks easy to get used to. You sort of float over it. Great for vibrato and string bends. Can't have the action too low on the higher frets or it will fret out. The action in this video is too low really. I need to raise it up slightly. Cheers
Are those the Dimarzio pickups or the Duncan ones that come in his guitar now?

Necks great, fairly thin bit rounded profile and narrows even thinner towards the headstock. I have no idea of the radius though. Cheers

hi paul... i was wonderin' whats your opinion on scalloped frets? ...
1.- faster? you'd say you play faster on scalloped rather than a regular one?
2.- easier?
3.- harder?
4.- hard to get used to?
5.- worth it? ( i just ordered a malmsteen strat... i wanted it so bad, but i'd say you can ruin the surprise for me hehe)
please write as much as you can, be as much expressive as possible...
thanks! ... your playing is awesome!
cachucaca 3 years ago
Not necessarily faster, that depends on your setup. Its easier to get string vibrato and grip the strings and it doesn't take long at all to get used to. It feels really cool and also looks kinda cool. Definately worth it, its my favourite strat and good for a range of music except death metal tight stuff. If you are buying a 2007/2008 model is will have nice deep scallops too. Cheers and enjoy

sounds nice. lol but not the best jazz guitar in my opinion.

haha, yuh and I can't really play jazz. (although Id like to be able to!)

Hi, I'm thinking about buying a malmsteen strat but not sure yet... A few questions: Can you use it for playing hard rock/metal stuff (power chords etc.)? Can you obtan a decent amount of distortion without using a pedal? (I own a marshal 50W combo)
ratoulol 3 years ago
if it is a marshall MG series, then no because they can't get a metal sound without a pedal. If you want metal, but versatile check out Carvin, Jackson, and ESP. Maybe Charvel, but they would be out of this price range.
k1ng92 3 years ago
The YJM pickups are super low output...you would have to change the bridge pup to a mini humbucker to convert the guitar into a more metal orientated guitar without a pedal. You would have to choose a pickup that fits into the single coil slot and is high in output (e.g. 13k+). The scalloped neck encourages you to vibrato the chords a little so it wont sound as crunchy and tight as other dedicated metal guitars (like ibanez, ESP, Jackson, Dean) but it could be done through a simple PU swap.

ok, thanks a lot for the advice :)

do you have any suggestions on the tone settings and volume settings when you are playing live?? Every sound guy that I have dealt with cant seem to mix my JSX. They tell me either i'm too compressed on the ultra stage or I have too much gain. I only run the ultra channel @ 50% if that and i dont use a compressor pedal.. any suggestions?
robpags 3 years ago
I only use my JSX at home. For live or rehearsal I use the Marshall or Elmwood because they are way easier to get a loud tone with and fit the mix much easier. The JSX is not easy to get a good mix with live. Try using the crunch channel up high in gain rather than the ultra and watch those pre/res controls. The ultra ch often blurs the EQ range so an EQ pedal might help. Also you could try reducing the gain right down and using a distortion pedal?
paulscape72 3 years ago
i kinda would love to see you playing this guitar on the crunch channel on the jsx with the YJM308. :) I wanna see if it gets me the Yngwie tone. :D Because I will buy this amp for sure then, best tube combo I ever heared.
LightOfTruth777 3 years ago
I'll see what I can do. If I turn the gain down slightly on the crunch channel and then use the DOD it will get his sound. I think my marshall 50w plexi does it slightly better...its a little more dirty in tone whereas the JSX is smooth. It's a great amp for sure. The Elmwood is my favourite amp though. Its incredible!
paulscape72 3 years ago
Thanks paul.. one more question.. what is your signal chain consist of? Do you run your MXR EQ pre-gain or through the loop?
robpags 3 years ago
I dont use the MXR EQ at all but it might help with live performance and your sound guy. I keep the signal chain pretty clear. Usually Im just plugged straight into the amp and use some delay in the loop, that's all. Sometimes I'll throw a phaser or flanger in front.
paulscape72 3 years ago
what did you use for tone settings on all 3 channels of the JSX?
robpags 3 years ago
I just used the clean and ultra channel I believe. Clean: Bass 6, mid 5, treble 5.5, volume 2. Ultra: bass 8, mid 4, treble 5.5, volume 1, reverb: can't remember, maybe 4? res 6, pres 6 master volume 1. Something like that.
paulscape72 3 years ago
is it easier to play fast on that kind of neck?
TXT900 3 years ago
about the same depending on action. Its easier to string bend and do vibrato though... you can really grip and shake those strings
paulscape72 3 years ago
i've heard... that can Detune some bends or if you aply too much strengt....this is real? hugs frim brasil :D
neryngo 3 years ago
Depends on the scalloped guitar. This fender USA YJM strat doesn't have that problem. In fact it stays in tune incredibly well and doesn't detune at all even on chords. You tend to vibrato some of the chords anyway. Cheers
paulscape72 3 years ago
Great!
Marcoshary 3 years ago
I have got one exactly liks this one. Playing chords for me is a bit more difficult 'cause I tend to press some strings too hard and it gets sort of out of tune. But I love the tar, it gets me great control over every note.
ThisSpitefulSnake 3 years ago
Mine never goes out of tune - its amazing. I fully stretch in the strings though anf take some time to wind them on properly...something I dont do with my floyd guitars! I love the 70's vibe about it too.

I dont think I could even come close to Gilbert except in names :) We share the same name but his skill is light years ahead of mine! I can't believe his alternate picking, although I dont find him particularly melodic.

is playing chords as hard on your fingers as people say with the scalloped neck?
BeboAltizer 3 years ago
Not at all. Your thumb gets pretty tired after a little while though
dylanthebody 3 years ago
Not really - in fact I like the scalloped neck for chords because you can get nice vibrato on the chords.
paulscape72 3 years ago
thanks dylanthebody and paulscape72.
BeboAltizer 3 years ago
pretty cool ....there is no noise ..is it the pickups or you are using a noise gate?
keep on rockin'
StratMaster70s 3 years ago
Im playing through a JSX on this demo and it has in built nose gate, plus the pickups are somewhat noiselss being stacked single coils and then the amp is on very low volume so not much hum. JSX is very quiet amp. Cheers

dude, is it hard to get use to the scalloped neck?
cjyr 3 years ago
I got used to it pretty quick. It doesn't really make it easier or harder, just requires a slightly different playing style but the vibrato is nice...it encourages you to use vibrato even on barre chords. It also gives the guitar a different tone - there's no wood to dampem the neck tone.

ive watched this video like 20xs im trying to figure out if i want a les paul or this yjm strat!
klockworkx 3 years ago
Tough choice - I think you'd have to eventually have both! Very different guitars. If I had to have only 1 though I would choose the JYM strat.
paulscape72 3 years ago
yeah im leaning towards the yjm strat,,, haha goodbye stimulus check..
klockworkx 3 years ago
Yeah I am.This guy does sound really good. I love that i can hear the strings. He's a strong player.
EddySwass 3 years ago
Hey, i clicked this wanting to see the guitar up close. I was interested in this guitar except i have problems actually finding a store that sells it..could you tell me more about the scalloped neck? Like comfort-wise and the main differences in preformance/feel compared to a standard neck?
CludzyMasta 3 years ago
The new fender malmsteen necks are flawless. Its a vintage style neck with jumbo frets and Ive found the scalloped necks easy to get used to. You sort of float over it. Great for vibrato and string bends. Can't have the action too low on the higher frets or it will fret out. The action in this video is too low really. I need to raise it up slightly. Cheers
